Welcome to #FitReaders!! Felicia the Geeky Blogger and I are super excited to be co-hosting this fitness-oriented group for another year! For the the first quarter of 2016 (January – March), Felicia will be hosting the official check-ins. This is my weekly check-in post where I share about my week, and I hope you share about yours as well.

For 2016, Felicia and I will continue to have weekly check-ins at both blogs on Fridays. For the first quarter (January – March), the “official” check-ins will be on Felicia’s blog, but you are welcome to leave messages at either/both blogs, Facebook, or Twitter. We will alternate every other quarter, just like in 2015. Additionally, we are adding a new component to #FitReaders during 2016…

Virtual 5k and 10k Race Series2016-Virtual-5K-medals-398x400

The Virtual 5k and 10k Race Series is organized online, and FitReaders from all over the world can compete. Where it is different from a traditional race is that you are responsible for completing the walk/run at any place you desire, at any time during the race time frame, that works for you. Whether you choose to enter an actual sponsored race, or go out on your own path, you will qualify!

This will be a monthly series, aka one race per month. Each “race” will need to be completed between the first and last day of the month. You will need to take a picture at the end of your “race” and post it either on FB, Twitter, your check-in, and/or blog. Examples of pictures are: a screen shot of your phone or gps that shows you “raced” either 5k or 10k, your playlist of songs for your journey, a map of your route, photos of scenery, etc. Basically something that indicates which race you completed (5k or 10k) and the time it took for you to finish. You do not have to post your face if you don’t want. Click the photo for more information!

Once you have completed your January “race” (5k or 10k), you need to “cross the finish line” by posting your achievement to the Virtual Finish Line. Each month there will be a virtual ribbon for every finisher, which you can display proudly on your check-ins. If at the end of the year you have completed 10 of the 12 races, you will get an actual medal (photo above).

You do NOT have to compete in the Virtual 5k and 10K Race Series to participate in #FitReaders. This is an optional component to the #FitReaders group.

My Week:

I had such a great holiday week. My parents were here until New Year’s Eve. Mom and I got out and walked most days, making sure we got in our steps. I did eat a bit more than usual, but tried to still make healthier choices. Unfortunately, we got our first snow/ice storm of the season on Tuesday, keeping me indoors. I did get out on Wednesday and Thursday, but my pace slowed down tremendously due to the icy road conditions.

Now I’m ready to tackle 2016. I’m going to try to complete the 10k race series by walking a 10k (6.2 miles) each month. Other goals include continuing to exercise (move with purpose) six days per week, getting in 10,000 steps each day, and tracking my food intake each day.

Christmas 2016 FitReaders

I completed a 4 mile walk on Christmas Day!

My Movement*:
Friday: one walk totaling 62 minutes, 11,969 steps/day
Saturday: one walk totaling 48 minutes, 11,468 steps/day
Sunday: one walk totaling 37 minutes, 11,029 steps/day
Monday: one walk totaling 37 minutes, 11,743 steps/day
Tuesday: no exercise, 5,008 steps/day
Wednesday: one walk totaling 45 minutes, 10,794 steps/day
Thursday: one walk totaling 50 minutes, 10,882 steps/day

* I track two different goals. The first goal is a timed duration of exercise – moving with the intent to raise my heart rate and get in some cardiovascular work. This is what I’m mean when I say “45 minutes walking.” The second goal is total daily steps. This is from my Fitbit, which measures all steps from 12:00AM – 11:59PM, exercise included.

  • I’m going to try to be better now that the holidays are over. I signed back up for Daily Burn. I’m also hoping that once spring gets here I can starting riding again. Happy New Year!

    • I hear you. Making time to work out is less and less appealing, especially when it’s so cold outside. I need to find something that sparks my interest. Happy New Year to you!!

    I had a lot of excercise this week as in was on a skiing holiday. Great workout but pretty exhausting

    • Skiing is a great way to work out!! I’m hoping we’ll get enough snow that I can do the same in January.

    I had two days below 12k steps but otherwise I got my steps in. I finished week 2 of C25K on 1/1 with 4.7 miles walking/running intervals. That’s been my best run in at least 6 months.

    I did finally finish my dive instructor last month and we are having a party to celebrate tonight. Water was a balmy 57 degrees. Eek!

    And I will be back to tracking my food on myfitnesspal again this week.

    You had a great week!!! I’m so excited about the virtual race series…I’m going to try to find a real race by me, but I do have the ability to do 5k’s on the treadmill at the gym, so I have that at least 🙂 I”m going to focus on balancing getting my steps in this month with figuring out how to incorporate strength-training/stretching…I’m so bad at doing both!

    • I would like to do some “real” races once the weather gets better! Looking forward to 2016! Woo hoo!

    I’m slowly getting back into pilates and yoga. Once I’m flexible again I’m going to add back the lifting classes. Baby steps to get me back where I was this past Spring. Rotating between strength classes and cardio days.

  • Happy New Year!! You got in a lot of steps over the holidays – that’s great!! I was lucky to get my 10,000 per day, and I over indulged a bit on food. Definitely need to get back on track in January. The virtual 5K sounds awesome!

    • Hope you had a great holiday. I ate so much, but I am slowly getting rid of it… Unfortunately I’m eating it! lol

    I am so impressed by how many steps you get in each day! It was really hard for me to reach 10,000 even one day last week but I hope to do it again this week if I can. I think winter will make things more challenging but I didn’t really walk outside anyway. I live on a very busy road so I’d need to drive somewhere to walk. I may try outdoor walks on my breaks at work this spring though.

    • Thanks so much! I spend a lot of time walking. LOL. Usually I walk 3-4 miles, so that is where the bulk of the steps come in. But I also have 2 busy kiddos and they keep me hopping!
