REVIEW TO COME

Snippet:

Joe waited for Ava.

He glanced at the clock. 8:30. Manning had said she’d be ready at eight, but he doubted that meant much to Ava, even if she’d gotten the memo. Arlin perched next to him, ecstatic to be included and back in his position as shotgun.

Joe wasn’t risking his first real day on the job without the dog’s steadying presence. He’d explain him somehow.

The waiting didn’t bother him much. At least the underground garage was dim and quiet. He’d be spending a lot of his time waiting for her, as he would for any client. That was part of the job. A skill he’d acquired through those long hours, days, weeks and months of waiting for something, anything to happen. At least now when he gave in to boredom and actively wished for something, anything to happen, it wouldn’t involve getting his skull rattled and his leg blown off.

Keeping the paparazzi off Ava would be like escorting grade-schoolers through a crosswalk compared to that.

Fending off her mercurial flirtations and demands, however, would be like navigating land mines riddling the only source of water for miles. After a while, the thirst became more important than any other consideration. Either way you died. It became a choice of fast or slow.

“Why did I agree to this?” He asked Arlin.

The dog gave him a canine grin, tongue lolling as if he laughed in answer. He ruffled the dog’s ears.

“Some help you are.” Maybe she’d be all business today, yesterday’s pass at him simply a whim on her part. Or part of the job interview. Kiss me. Her lashes had feathered over her tawny eyes as she’d dropped her gaze to his mouth. He’d nearly obeyed—both her and the clamoring hounds of lust—before he yanked himself back, grasped reality again.

Not that his fevered brain hadn’t replayed the moment over and over, his eyes popping open to jerk him awake all night, unsure whether any of it had been real or more lurid dreams. Twice he’d grabbed his phone off the nightstand to leave Manning a voice mail saying he’d changed his mind.

Three times he shut off the glaring light, unable to bear the sight of the slowly passing hours.

Book Blurb:

Not all desires are shiny and sweet—and the dark ones might change you forever…

It’s not the kind of obsession a tough Army guy can admit to—a jones for Ava, the pretty-princess pop star. Not just her body, the perfect product that sells all those magazines. Her music.

The critics call her human lip gloss, all style and no substance. To Joe Ivanchan, Ava is the exact blend of reality and fantasy that he can tolerate, the closest he’s willing to get to giving his heart after the injury and breakdown that got him out of the service.

But Ava is real. She’s a flesh and blood woman with a publicity machine and an album deadline, along with a whole team of handlers paid to shellac a pristine sheen over a damaged, desperate soul. A woman with fears, with secrets, with desires.

When Joe finds himself in an interview to join her security team as her driver, his instinct is to get away. But the woman behind Ava’s carefully focus-grouped image is even harder to walk away from. The angry needs tormenting her speak to something within Joe. Something empathetic, protective—and primal…

Besides, even a falling star can light up the darkest night.
