Review: Navarro’s Promise

Review: Navarro’s Promise Navarro’s Promise Author: Lora Leigh  Release Date: April 5, 2011 Publisher: Berkley Trade The Breeds Series #24 ISBN: #978-0425239780 Genre: Paranormal Romance, Erotic Format(s): paperback (320 pgs), e-book I purchased a copy of the book for my own reading pleasure. From the author’s website: In the wolf breed novel, NAVARRO’S PROMISE, Mica Toler’s best friend is the wolf/coyote hybrid breed, Cassie Sinclair. And now Mica is being drawn into her world in ways she had prayed she never would be when the charming wolf breed Navarro makes good on the promise he made her on a dark, explosive night. The Breeds guaranteed that no harm would come to Micah Toler but they never allowed for her sensual fascination with Navarro Blaine. Aloof, cool, and mysterious, he draws her in as no man ever has. But Micah never wanted this. She had her own dreams, her own desires, and being stalked and seduced by a wolf breed wasn’t part of that plan. Now she knows her life is in danger. What Navarro knows is that she’s his mate and that the breeding and training that created him is being peeled away in his desperation to claim a woman that refuses to be claimed. He has her body. She craves his touch. And as the breeds converge the past will rise up to haunt Navarro in ways he never expected. What I’m talking about:       Once again, I stress to you all… The Breeds Series is my guilty pleasure. You can read about my love in my recent review of the novella “Primal Kiss” HERE.       Chronologically, this story takes place after Styx’s Storm and the recent novella “Primal Kiss.”  The story focuses on Breed Enforcer, Navarro Blaine and human Mica Toler.  Mica grew up among the Breeds and is best friends with one of the Breed protected children, Cassie Sinclair.  Mica is now an adult, but has dreamed of and loved Navarro since she was 16. She guarded her emotions from him for years, but when the evil Phillip Brandenmore threatens her life, Mica and Navarro are thrown together in a dangerous fight for survival.       NOTE: due to some technical issues with the book, I have described a scene that may be slightly spoilerish. In addition, I have mentioned some things about the conclusion of the book that are spoilers.       I’m going to say right up front that this book was a...

Quickie Review: "Primal Kiss"

Quickie Review: "Primal Kiss" “Primal Kiss” from the Anthology Primal Author: Lora Leigh  Release Date: February 1, 2011 Publisher: Berkley Trade The Breeds Series #23 ISBN: #978-0425239056 Genre: Paranormal Romance, Erotic Format(s): paperback, e-book I borrowed a copy of the book for my own reading pleasure. (thanks Mandi!) From the author’s website: When the bad boy lion breed, Creed Raines, crashes the family cabin while Pharmaceutical CEO Horace Engalls’ daughter is vacationing, it sets off a series of events that even Creed couldn’t have imagined beginning. Mating Heat blows sky high, hot and overwhelming, and reminding him of all the reasons he had fought to avoid it. Especially with the shy, though incredibly stubborn decidedly willful, much loved and cherished Engalls Princess, Kita Engalls. But for Jonas Wyatt it could be a blessing in disguise, because only Horace Engalls knows the true scope of Phillip Brandenmore’s evil. And only by holding Kita hostage to the truth Jonas demands, will it ever come to light. But can mating heat bloom and became the fiery tendrils of love when Kita suspects her breed has betrayed her? What I’m talking about:       Once again, I stress to you all… The Breeds Series is my guilty pleasure. Ms. Leigh writes some of the hottest erotic paranormal stories out there, and this novella is no exception! As an avid reader of this series, my review may not make sense to those of you that have not YET picked up this delicious series.       Chronologically, this story takes place after Styx’s Storm and prior to the recently released Navarro’s Promise (review later this week).  As with most of Ms. Leigh’s novellas, “Primal Kiss” contains key plot development for the overall story arc.  In this case, we find out more about Phillip Brandenmore and his evil plot to create a “fountain of youth” serum from mating Breed pairs. At risk, his niece, Kita Engalls, the unknown (at the time) mate of Breed Enforcer Creed Raines.  She is wanted by both the Breeds and purest-human groups as leverage to get knowledge from Brandenmore.       The pace of this story is quick. There are few bumps in the road and both Kita and Creed readily accept their lot as mates including all of the complications that come with the Breed mating hormone. The primary focus of the story is the romance between Kita and Creed, which is erotic and sensual. The story climaxes with a showdown between...

Review & Giveaway: Rock Hard

Review & Giveaway: Rock Hard Rock Hard Author: Olivia Cunning Release Date: April 1, 2011 Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca Sinners on Tour Book 2 ISBN: #978-1402245770 Genre: Erotic Romance Format(s): Paperback (448 pgs), ebook I received a copy of this book from the PUBLISHER for the purposes of an honest review. From the author’s website: Sinners’ lead singer, Sed, had his heart shredded when Jessica left him to pursue her dreams,so when she dances her way back into his life, he’s not sure he’s ready for her brand of pain, or pleasure, again. When she convinces Sed to engage in a benefits with benefits relationship, things seem to be going his way, until one of his fans catches their explicit public display of affection on film and posts it all over the internet. Will Jessica ever trust Sed again? And has Sed become the man of Jessica’s dreams or is he just posing to get what he wants? What B is talking about: Jessica Chase has the brains to become a first-rate lawyer, but the body of the perfect pinup. Her heart still aches for the ex-fiancé she left behind when she had to choose between him and her career, and a chance meeting is about set her world on fire all over again.  Sed Lionheart has never gotten over Jessica leaving him like she did, and meaningless sex on the road with groupies can never fill the emptiness that remains. Once Jessica reenters his life, though, he is complete again, and he’ll risk everything for the chance to hold on to her forever.  Jumping right to the heart of the matter, break out the ice cubes. Or a high-powered fan. This novel solidly lives up to its genre. There’s sex. Lots and lots of sex. Sex indoors, out of doors, and even far above the city of Las Vegas. Never mind what happens literally under the table, and in the band’s tour bus. Sed and Jessica have a penchant for sex in public, and they indulge it as often as they can. Cunning has a great imagination, though, so each encounter stays erotic and edgy. I did have a few issues with the story itself, mostly the length of time Jessica is subjected to the distrust and hatred for her breakup with Sed. While it’s true the rest of the band only had Sed’s version of their breakup to base their opinions on in her absence, I was ready for her to set the story straight...

Review: Edge of Moonlight

Review: Edge of Moonlight Edge of Moonlight Author: Stephanie Julian Release Date: May, 2010 Publisher: Ellora’s Cave Publishing Lucani Lovers Series Book 3 ISBN: #978-1419927911 Genre: Paranormal Romance, Erotica Format(s): Ebook I received a copy of this book from the PUBLISHER for the purposes of an honest review. From the author’s website:      Etruscan wolf shifter Kaine Giliati has longed for John Simmons since he willingly agreed to wipe all memory of her from his mind. The pain in her heart is only magnified by terror—the ability to call her wolf appears to have deserted her, as well.      For months after he and his sister escaped a crazed kidnapper, John has been dreaming about a beautiful woman he’s never met but who seems so familiar. A woman he’s shocked to find in a dark bar one night. A woman who agrees to come back to his apartment for raw, passionate sex.      One erotic, stolen night reopens old wounds, uncovers buried memories and sets Kaine and John on a path filled with danger, magic and potential heartbreak. What B is talking about:      Kaine Gillati is supposed to be one of the strongest of her kind. She is “Sicari”—an elite assassin for the king of the Lucani himself. Now she’s faced with a new discovery about her family that could cost her the only home she’s ever known. John Simmons is determined to protect and shelter his sister and avenge her kidnapping. But when the woman of his dreams becomes real, he learns that nothing is as it seems, and the fight to hold on to her may be his toughest yet.      Edge of Moonlight is another enjoyable installment in the Lucani Lovers series. The stories continue to build on one another as the plot becomes more engaging. Julian stays with what has worked in the other books in the series and uses the conflict, and eventual resolution, Kaine and John face as part of the larger story, while keeping the other characters she’s introduced relevant in the process.      Kaine and John have several very sexy encounters during the course of Edge of Moonlight. Rather than making their sexual discovery one of delicate appreciation turned to passion, or the acceptance of multiple partners, as in the first two novels in the series, these two practically collide with one another in near frenzies, both unable and unwilling to miss any opportunity they find to connect...

Review: Moonlight Menage

Review: Moonlight Menage Moonlight Ménage Author: Stephanie Julian Release Date: March 2010 Publisher: Ellora’s Cave Lucani Lovers, Book 2 ISBN: #978-1419927485 Genre: Paranormal Romance, Erotica Format(s): E-book I received a copy of this book from the PUBLISHER for the purposes of an honest review. From the author’s website:      For eight years, Etruscan witch Tira Belludi has longed for the two shifter men who hold her heart. But visions of death and fears for her sanity have forced her to keep her distance.      Nic Rocca and Duke Ducati are brothers in everything but blood and partners who have each other’s backs. They share a home, a job and had planned to share their life with Tira between them…until she saw their future and built a wall around her heart.      Now danger and death stalk Nic and Duke. And Tira must make a choice—grab love while she has the chance or watch Nic die from afar and lose Duke forever. What B is talking about:      Tira Belludi has inherited the gift of “Praenuntio” (foresight) from her mother, but views it as more of a curse. Nic Rocca and Duke Ducati have loved Tira for years, knew instantly she was their mate, but have all but given up on ever finding happiness together since Tira pulled away from them after she foresaw the death of one of their trio, and the destruction of all that remained of it.      Moonlight Ménage is the second book in Julian’s Lucani Lovers series, and while the sex was hotter, Tira’s evolution left me hoping for a little more. Unlike, Tamra, in Kiss of Moonlight, Tira is overwhelmed and cowed by her circumstances throughout most of the novel. By comparison, Nic and Duke are rich, vibrant characters that bear the weight of the story’s conflict well. I did feel sympathetic to Tira’s situation, but wish she’d fought more resolutely for her heart’s desire earlier on.      As to the sex…while I’ve certainly read naughtier depictions (*blush*), Moonlight Ménage definitely ramps it up a notch. Or two, to be more specific. This is a strictly heterosexual ménage a trios, as Nic and Duke never interact sexually with each other, but share Tira as their mate. They are two straight men sharing a sexual relationship with one woman at the same time. Once they all decide to take what they want despite the fate they’d previously accepted, they have a string...

Review: Kiss of Moonlight

Review: Kiss of Moonlight Kiss of Moonlight Author: Stephanie Julian  Release Date: October 2009 Publisher: Ellora’s Cave Lucani Lovers Series, Book 1 ISBN: #978-1419925399 Genre: Paranormal Romance, Erotica Format(s): E-book I received a copy of this book from the PUBLISHER for the purposes of an honest review. From the author’s website: Plagued by nightmares. Stalked by kidnappers. Tamra McMillan needs a safe haven. When tattooed bad-ass Kyle Rossini steps into her life, she didn’t expect to find a sanctuary from her demons or hot sex. But appearances can be deceiving. His tender touch and the hunger in his eyes brands her his for life. But otherworldly forces are afoot and death hovers… Etruscan werewolf Kyle Rossini is a loner. The king’s assassin with a killer’s instincts. The last thing he needs is a mate.  Until he meets the one woman who needs him more than he needs his solitude. When Tamra stumbles into his world and his bed, she captures his heart. And nothing will keep him from her. What B is talking about: Like any proper Alpha Male, Kyle Rossini keeps mostly to himself, is content to do his job as his king’s assassin, and likes to work on his muscle car in his spare time. An early (and refreshing) deviation from the stereotype comes in the form of Kyle’s fifteen year old daughter, Catene, who decides their new neighbor might be in trouble, and needs checking on. Tamra McMillan is running from her memories of a horrific attack and has isolated herself in her family’s old, run-down cabin in an attempt to come to terms with it and eventually reenter her former life. She’s looking for a decent night’s sleep and some inner peace, not earth-shattering sex, and certainly not a Lucani (an Etruscan skin-shifter) mate. Of course, things hardly ever go as planned, and Tamra gets more than she could have ever anticipated. Readers should know that there are vague flashbacks of the attack on Tamra. They aren’t overly explicit, but are mentioned through her memories and as details from the police report, as well as in a general overview of her case Kyle discovers while looking for particulars on Tamra online. I didn’t feel they overwhelmed the story in any way, however, but instead illustrate Tamra’s inner strength in overcoming what happened to her. Kiss of Moonlight definitely has some predictable moments and repetitions, but they don’t do the book any real harm. Julian injects a lot of originality...

Review: Fearless Desires

Review: Fearless Desires Fearless Desires Author: Stacey Espino  Release Date: June 10, 2010 Publisher: Siren Publishing Immortal Love Series Book #1 ISBN: #978-1606017371 Genre: Paranormal Romance, Erotic Format(s): paperback (266 pages), e-book I received an electronic copy of this book from the author for the purposes of an honest review. From the author’s website: Delius never asked for his fate, but in a world that placed all its faith in prophecy, he would be a fool to challenge it.  He felt like a parasite, forced to live off the fear of humans. From the first time Delius became trapped in Selina’s mind and seduced by her provocative thoughts, he was drawn to her.  She was a mystery that turned into an obsession.  Yet, for them to have a life together, Delius would have to go against his own race that demanded he fulfill his destiny.  One that did not include Selina. What I’m talking about: Delius and his five brothers are Fear Demons. But in Ms. Espino’s world, demons are not hideous creatures from hell. The Demons (Fear, Lust and Aggression) are immortal beings that look like humans (good looking ones, albeit) and feed off human energy. They (rarely) hurt humans, but they (are not supposed to) interfere with human activities.  Delius has never been happy with his lot in life – feeling like a leach and always witnessing the “evil” humanity has to offer. He is sent to investigate a human that doesn’t project fear, and as soon as he sees Selina, he is drawn to her. She is an enigma, but it’s more that the mystery that attracts him. He cannot help but feel possessive and the desire for both blooms.  Soon, Selina is pulled into the unknown world of Demons, where faith in prophecy rule above all and an impending Demon War is looming.  This book was like CRACK for me. I seriously could not put it down. I was reading while at work, in my car (not while driving), while making dinner, in line and the grocery store, etc.  It started with the unique and engrossing mythology. Then I couldn’t resist the smokin’ hot sex scenes. But Ms. Espino reeled me in with the love story. Delius and Selina are a great couple. They come from different worlds and they struggle to find their way together. They try to figure out if love can conquer all… can one choose love that is forbidden? What if it is not...

Decadent Deceptions – Review

Decadent Deceptions – Review Decadent Deceptions Author: Keta Diablo Release Date: October 2008 Publisher: Noble Romance Publishing ISBN: #978-1-60592-013-9 Genre: Historical Erotic Romance Note: This book was given to me by the author for the purpose of review. From the author’s website: Daring and desperate to win Morgan’s love, Olivia Breedlove embarks on a reckless folly. But everything backfires when Morgan remains one step ahead of her and the game ventures down a path of duplicity and murder. A decade ago, Morgan was a heartbeat away from taking Olivia’s virginity. Her father, Thaddeus, intervened and threatened to meet him over pistols if he so much as looked at his daughter again. But now, Thaddeus is dead and Morgan has no intention of ignoring the ravenous hunger he’s harbored for the blasted woman for ten years.  One way or the other, he will quench this burning desire and make her his forever. What I’m talking about: The book starts out with the recent death of dear Olivia and Cain’s father. He was a wealthy man who split his estate between his son (and fiancée) and daughter – with one catch: she must wed a respectable man of the gentry within 6 months. Headstrong Olivia does NOT like this plan, especially when the love of her life (and brother’s best friend) does not meet her father’s criteria.  Alas, Olivia is determined to win over Morgan, regardless of her father’s last wishes, if only Morgan would look at Olivia as more than a little sister.  In order to win over Morgan, Olivia begins a quest to make him jealous by venturing to the local brothel to “observe and learn.”  Meanwhile, Morgan has loved Olivia for ten years and is nearly insane with desire. He wants Olivia to love him and determines to “help” her in her endeavors.  Morgan and Olivia enter into game of cat and mouse to try and win over the other. Little do they realize that they both want the same thing: each other. Misconceptions raise the stakes at each turn of events. (It reminded me of that Friends episode when Phoebe and Rachel tried to get Chandler and Monica to admit that they were fooling around, yet Chandler and Monica wanted the ladies to admit they knew…) Top off these games with the fact that some one is killing off the brothel’s female employees, and it looks like the same person may be stalking Olivia. I have to tell you that I...

Tempting the Fire – ARC Review

Tempting the Fire – ARC Review Tempting the Fire Author: Sydney Croft  Release Date: July 27, 2010 Publisher: Bantam Books ACRO Series Book #5 ISBN: #978-0-385-34228-5 Genre: Paranormal Romance, Erotic Romance NOTE: An Advance Review Copy of this book was provided to me by the author for the purposes of review. From the author’s website: EXTREME HEAT. EXTREME HUNGER. A JUNGLE EDEN ABLAZE WITH TEMPTATION..      Shockwaves shoot through the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives (ACRO) when horrific video surfaces from the Brazilian rain forest. A team of Navy SEALs has been nearly wiped out by something sinister and superhuman. Now ACRO agents Sela Kahne and Marlena West head to the world’s most unforgiving jungle in pursuit of a mythical monstrosity with a taste for human blood. And the only path that will take them to the creature runs through two men, each hiding his own dark secret.      Sela is an expert on cryptozoology with a sideline skill that could prove invaluable: when she makes love to a man, she engulfs his innermost thoughts. Teamed with Marlena, Sela makes contact with the lone SEAL survivor, Chance McCormack. Meanwhile Logan Mills, the man who rescued Chance, leads his private company on a hunt that has nothing to do with saving lives. Soon, Sela will put her supernatural charms to work on Logan, determined to extract information about the creature they are seeking. But in this sweat-drenched realm of danger and deception, Logan is more than just a passive target. He has the power to lead a highly-trained seducer into a jungle without any rules, without any limits—and no end to the heat. What I’m talking about:      This book sizzles from the first page until the end! ACRO veteran agent, Sela, and first time field operative, Marlena, head to the Brazilian rain forest to find out more about the mysterious creature that was filmed attacking a SEAL team, and more importantly stop the para-military group, GWC, that is camped near the attack site, from selling weapons to ITOR (the bad guys). Even though Marlena is sent to seduce GWC head, Logan, she is unexplainably drawn to the loan SEAL survivor, Chance. Meanwhile, as Sela tries to push Logan towards Marlena, she can’t help but fall for his wicked charm and sex appeal.      The story that takes place down in the rain forest is SMOKIN’ HOT and exciting. Each individual struggles with a strong (never felt before) attraction, keeping a personal...

Isn’t it erotic… don’t you think?

Isn’t it erotic… don’t you think? No, it’s not like rain on your wedding day, it’s more like having hot, intense sex in the middle of a rain storm in front of your wedding guests… After enjoying romance books (paranormal) for over a year, I learned about “erotic romance” books. Why it took me so long to discover this sub-genre, I don’t know, but I didn’t realize it existed.  And I wondered What is erotic romance? Do they make paranormal erotic romance?   Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines “erotic” as: Main Entry: erot·ic Pronunciation: \i-ˈrä-tik\ Etymology: Greek erōtikos, from erōt-, erōs Date: 1651 1 : of, devoted to, or tending to arouse sexual love or desire 2 : strongly marked or affected by sexual desire Now, call me crazy, but I thought the “regular” romance books I have been reading for the past year are “erotic” so I was curious… what would be the difference in “erotic” romance stories? Since I wanted to stick with the paranormal romance genre, my choices and reading experiences may be different that those of you that read contemporary romance.  I read the following three stories, each are considered “erotic.” “Taken” a novella by Anya Bast  Mortal Temptations by Allyson James Of Crimson and Collars by Stella & Audra Price After my brief research I have come to the following conclusions about the term erotic as used in romance stories:  The sexual acts within the story involve more than 2 partners. Typically it is 2 males with 1 female, but it also can include larger groups. There are same-sex couplings, whether it be a couple or a group. The acts themselves do not necessarily involve the primary couple or are not done because of “love.” Sex is used as visual pleasure for another’s enjoyment. Other items (toys, animals, BDSM) are used in sexual play. Okay, so in other words, the “erotic” romance books are a bit more “hard core” than the “regular” romance books. I get it. But when I look back at the definition and I think about it, these stories did not impact or increase my sexual desire. They were not effectively erotic to me.  I have read several “regular” romance books that have “heated my oven,” much more effectively than these stories. I have also recently read the ACRO series by Sydney Croft. These books also fall in the “erotic” sub-genre, but I’m going to discuss them separately.  For those that are new to my blog, you may...
