#FitReaders Check-In: January 15, 2016

#FitReaders Check-In: January 15, 2016 Welcome to #FitReaders!! Felicia the Geeky Blogger and I are super excited to be co-hosting this fitness-oriented group for another year! For the the first quarter of 2016 (January – March), Felicia will be hosting the official check-ins. This is my weekly check-in post where I share about my week, and I hope you share about yours as well. If you have a weekly check-in blog post or put your updates on any social media site, please leave a link to your check-in posts in the comment section, below. NEW FOR 2016: For 2016, Felicia and I will continue to have weekly check-ins at both blogs on Fridays. For the first quarter (January – March), the “official” check-ins will be on Felicia’s blog, but you are welcome to leave messages at either/both blogs, Facebook, or Twitter. We will alternate every other quarter, just like in 2015. Additionally, we are adding a new component to #FitReaders during 2016… The Virtual 5k and 10k Race Series + 1 mile Fun Run!   For more information about this fun event, visit the FitReaders info page at Felicia’s blog, and to log in your January “races,” visit the January Virtual Finish Line and post your achievement to the Virtual Finish Line. Each month there will be a virtual ribbon for every finisher, which you can display proudly on your check-ins. If at the end of the year you have completed 10 of the 12 races, you will get an actual medal (see photo) or certificate (1 mile). You do NOT have to compete in the Virtual 5k and 10K Race Series to participate in #FitReaders. This is an optional component to the #FitReaders group. My Week: This was another good week, and I’ve been able to keep up my 10,000+ days. I had wanted to get in my 10k (6.2 miles) “race” this week, but after 5 miles on Monday, it was too cold and dark out to keep going. Maybe next week! I’ve also been doing a good job tracking, and other than a calorie-filled night out last Saturday, I’ve been doing pretty good. In fact, I’m back down to pre-holiday weight. How about you? Did you accomplish a 1 mile, 5k, or 10k race this week? My Movement*: Friday: two walks totaling 55 minutes, 11,832 steps/day Saturday: one walk totaling 60 minutes, 12,611 steps/day Sunday: no exercise, 4,276 steps/day Monday: one walk totaling 73 minutes (5.11 miles), 16,116 steps/day Tuesday: two walks totaling 49 minutes, 10,659 steps/day Wednesday: three walks totaling 48 minutes, 11,561 steps/day Thursday: 53 minutes Body Flow + one walk totaling 40 minutes, 13,000+...

You do NOT have to compete in the Virtual 5k and 10K Race Series to participate in #FitReaders. This is an optional component to the #FitReaders group. How to get started? I didn’t just decide to go out and walk a 5k one day. It took time and effort to get there. I realize that each of us is in our own place and we all have our own fitness journeys. Some of us have physical limitations that may hamper a 5k (3.1 miles). The purpose of #FitReaders is to support each and everyone of you on your own path. When I started two years ago, I wasn’t exercising at all. I decided to “move with purpose” for 10 minutes each day. That’s how I started, and it went up from there. If you aren’t moving at all right now, you need to start slowly and work your way into more. Find a goal that puts you just outside your comfort level, but is doable. Please note –...

#FitReaders Check-In: January 1, 2016 Welcome to #FitReaders!! Felicia the Geeky Blogger and I are super excited to be co-hosting this fitness-oriented group for another year! We will alternate every other quarter, just like in 2015. Additionally, we are adding a new component to #FitReaders during 2016… Virtual 5k and 10k Race Series The Virtual 5k and 10k Race Series is organized online, and FitReaders from all over the world can compete. Where it is different from a traditional race is that you are responsible for completing the walk/run at any place you desire, at any time during the race time frame, that works for you. Whether you choose to enter an actual sponsored race, or go out on your own path, you will qualify! This will be a monthly series, aka one race per month. Each “race” will need to be completed between the first and last day of the month. You will need to take a picture at the end of your “race” and post it either on FB, Twitter, your check-in, and/or blog. Examples of pictures are: a screen shot of your phone or gps that shows you “raced” either 5k or 10k, your playlist of songs for your journey, a map of your route, photos of scenery, etc. Basically something that indicates which race you completed (5k or 10k) and the time it took for you to finish. You do not have to post your face if you don’t want. Click the photo for more information! Once you have completed your January “race” (5k or 10k), you need to “cross the finish line” by posting your achievement to the Virtual Finish Line. Each month there will be a virtual ribbon for every finisher, which you can display proudly on your check-ins. If at the end of the year you have completed 10 of the 12...

This week went by so quickly. And holy wowza… we are only ONE WEEK UNTIL CHRISTMAS! *phew* Panic is over. I’ve been keeping busy, and getting in my steps. I’m looking forward to having over a week off during the holidays and hosting my folks for a visit. Mom will walk with me and keep me going. I’m going to bring her to Body Flow, too. I’ve been getting in a little bit more walking time because I’ve been listening to some great audiobooks. Two books, from one of my favorite series, just came out on audio, and I love having the chance to “reread” both London Bound by Jessica Jarman...

My Week: I am pretty surprised at the number of steps I was able to get in this week. And, except for today, I’ve been eating pretty well. I’m actually down a couple pounds – which is good news going into the last half of the month. #FitReaders Check-In: December 4, 2015

#FitReaders Check-In: December 4, 2015 Welcome to #FitReaders!! Felicia the Geeky Blogger and I are super excited to be co-hosting this fitness-oriented group during 2015. For the rest of 2015 (October – December), I will be hosting the official check-ins. This is my weekly check-in post where I share about my week, and I hope you share about yours as well. If you have a weekly check-in blog post or put your updates on any social media site, please leave a link to your check-in posts in the comment section, below. Or, if you want to use this post as your weekly check-in, leave a comment telling us how your week went! (I only use the linky on the monthly commitment posts, for the weekly posts, I use the comments.) Dealing with December: December is here and that means 1) lots of parties and eating and 2) cold weather. These are both things that can hamper our progress and work towards being fit. Don’t stress about it! First… parties are fun and eating is enjoyable, so don’t punish yourself for having fun. I try to eat something small and healthy before I go to parties, so I won’t be as hungry. I also try to remember to have food that I don’t normally get – so I skip breads, chips, and regular dips, because I can have those anytime. Instead I try to sample all of the stuff I don’t have regularly. Second… cold weather and snow can make it more difficult to get outside. I still prefer being outside to working out on a machine, but indoor exercise is always an option. You can march in place, or do jumping jacks/jump rope. You can find a video or look online for a short workout. I still walk, but I bundle up and take it slow. I don’t want to slip and fall, so I use a flashlight, sometimes walk in my boots, and go slowly. Don’t get down if you aren’t doing your “normal” routine. Keep checking in and remember each day is a new day! Making Your Workout Fun! Okay… so I’m going to give a big shout out to Rachelle of Fortified by Books on this one… Have you seen this game?? It’s called Zombies, Run. According to Rachelle: The game involves “missions” which are about 30 minutes long (if you pay for the Pro edition you can adjust the times). Each mission is basically a workout session. You hit play and start walking or...

#FitReaders Check-In: November 27, 2015

#FitReaders Check-In: November 27, 2015 Welcome to #FitReaders!! (I only use the linky on the monthly commitment posts, for the weekly posts, I use the comments.) My Week: This was a fun week – with the Thanksgiving Holiday (U.S.) on Thursday, I only worked Monday and Tuesday. The kiddos were also off from school. Of course, this holiday is food-centric and I overate A LOT this week. I did get in my steps, so it mostly balanced out, with only a minor weight gain. Did you go for a walk or exercise in any manner on Thanksgiving? If so, be sure to see the fun mini-challenge Felicia and I hosted. If you did you walk, check in there or here and download your badge to show off! Click the turkey badge for more information. My Movement*: Friday: one walk totaling 16 minutes, 11,307 steps/day Saturday: one walk totaling 30 minutes, 11,425 steps/day Sunday: one walk totaling 52 minutes, 11,857 steps/day Monday: one walk totaling 40 minutes, 12,938 steps/day Tuesday: three walks totaling 56 minutes, 12,759 steps/day Wednesday: one walk totaling 48 minutes, 13,245 steps/day Thursday: THANKSGIVING one walk totaling 67 minutes, 15,031 steps/day * I track two different goals. The first goal is a timed duration of exercise – moving with the intent to raise my heart rate and get in some cardiovascular work. This is what I’m mean when I say “45 minutes walking.” The second goal is total daily steps. This is from my Fitbit, which measures all steps from 12:00AM – 11:59PM, exercise included. Sign up for November: It’s not too late!! Don’t forget to SIGN UP FOR NOVEMBER! and commit to exercising for the month. Sign ups from October through December will be at That’s What I’m Talking About. Questions for YOU! How was your week? Did you hit any milestones? Try a new food or workout? Celebrate your week with...
