#FitReaders Commit to Exercise for June 2015 Welcome to #FitReaders!! Felicia the Geeky Blogger and I are super excited to be co-hosting this fitness-oriented group for 2015. During the months of April – June, 2015, I am hosting the official check-ins and quarterly giveaway. It is time to Commit to Exercise for June 2015! Whether you are just joining us, need to get back on the wagon, or continuing your monthly progress, now is the time to stand up and say “I’m in! I’m committed to getting up and getting moving!” So are you ready to commit to fit? The weather was ideal and everyone had a great time. I ate WAY TOO MUCH FOOD all weekend, so it was no surprise that I gained almost three pounds when I weighed in on Monday. However, I’ve been kicking my own butt all week long, even starting a Workweek Hustle Fitbit Challenge with some of you all to motivate me to move more. And it seems to be working. Thank you! I finished the bulk of the writing for my big project at work, so I didn’t have to put in extra hours this week. Then, buoyed by the warm weather, I was able to get out and walk, and I managed to hit step counts and exercise every day this week. Of course, I’m really looking forward to this weekend when we host our neighborhood lobster bake. I just ordered 50 lobsters and 50 lbs of steamers! I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep track of my calorie count! Or, if you want to use this post as your weekly check-in, leave a comment telling us how your week went! My Week: This week has been a mixed bag for me. Life has been busy, both at home and work. My big project is coming up on deadlines, and I’ve been working late and on the weekends trying to get it all done. Good news is that after today, things won’t be nearly as crazy at work. At home, we have the usual craziness of spring sports and end-of-school. However, the Boy has a knee injury and BG has on-going medical issues that have me running all over to appointments. In the end, I missed meeting my step count on three days and didn’t get in my 30 minutes in on two days. BOO! The wins for this week include: I did a walk/jog on Thursday – first time “running” since last fall for me. And, even though I was working late, I did take advantage of the nice weather one day and went for a short (1 mile) walk along this trail (photo, above), which is right next to my office. The trail was created on the site of a former railroad track and goes on for miles and miles. I may need to take time to hit this path more often! Or, if you want to use this post as your weekly check-in, leave a comment telling us how your week went! My Week: SUMMER HAS ARRIVED! Seriously…. It went from highs in the mid-40s to 70s and even 80 on Thursday! This week has been absolutely beautiful and so I’ve been outside a lot. The weather makes walking so much more enjoyable. I even got away from my usual route now that the sidewalks are clear of snow! I live on the coast, so there are a lot of wetlands and marshes. Here is a photo of a small wooded wetland near me. As I mentioned last week – I am now a member of Fitbit and I’m really enjoying it! I set my step goal at 10,000 per day – this is in addition to exercising 30 minutes/day. It’s definitely making a difference in my day-to-day activities. I’ll march in place, walk the long way to get something at work, do jumping jacks while watching TV! I plan to move with purpose for 30 minutes each day, taking off no more than one day per week. I also want to take one BodyFlow (yoga) Class per week. In addition, I will log my food/caloric intake each day using the LostIt! app. Finally, I recently joined the Fitbit crew and will be tracking my steps. In addition to “exercising” I want to take 10,000 steps and move for 4 miles each day (with no more than one day off per week). Are you on Fitbit? When I weighed in on Monday, I was down a little bit, and hope to be down even more next Monday. As predicted, I did a lot of yard work on Sunday. And I’ve found a new walking route… My daughter has lacrosse practice Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the elementary school, which as a 1/2 mile loop. This week, I walked 4 miles both nights while she was practicing. My Movement: Friday: 26 minutes walking Saturday: none Sunday: 3.5 hours yard work + 32 minutes walking Monday: 47 minutes walking Tuesday: 63 minutes walking Wednesday: 45 minutes walking Thursday:  50 minutes BodyFlow + 60 minutes walking Questions for YOU! While there are still piles in shady places around town, there is none in my yard. The crocuses are finally blooming, and I am seeing some green. Of course, with all of the snow gone, I am left with a very messy yard. I think some intensive yard work is in my workout schedule this weekend! As for my health and well-being, it’s a mixed bag. I gained weight for the third week in a row (but still below my goal weight), even though I was able to get outside and move. I’ve noticed that my walks, while longer, are also slower, so that means fewer calories burned sometimes. And it really goes back to the junk food and snacking that I talked about last week. So I’m making a conscious effort to cut back on the extras. So far, it seems to be helping. I still managed to get outside and walk most days this week. I skipped out on Wednesday – it was BG’s 9th birthday and we had a busy schedule. One issue I’m struggling with is that I’ve been eating a lot of junk food – not sure why, but I can’t seem to stop, even when it makes me feel yucky. I have noticed a couple extra pounds on the scale, but I’m still below my goal weight. I’m hoping that once the weather gets better, I’ll shake off this craving for junk. I was outside a lot, even when we got some surprise SNOW on Saturday! Luckily today it was sunny and 55, and I was able to walk without a full winter coat! The sunshine really lifted my spirits. I’m back to thinking about getting a FitBit, but honestly, I don’t know that it would help me do more than what I do now. It may  be fun to check my daily steps, but I my goals revolve around moving and walking for a specific amount of time, so I don’t need to know my step count. Thoughts?
