Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Amanda Bonilla

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Amanda Bonilla Please help me welcome urban fantasy author, Amanda Bonilla, to That’s What I’m Talking About. I had the privilege of meeting Amanda at Authors After Dark in August this year. She is here today to share her Top 5 moments from AADSAV. She’s also generously giving away one (1) e-copy of her new release Vengeance Borne. Details of the giveaway are below. It is open internationally! Take it away, Amanda… My Top 5 Authors After Dark Moments Thanks so much to Jen and the rest of the crew for having me as a guest today! Until AAD Savannah, I was a conference virgin. There aren’t many events for authors in my neck of the woods and very few in the northwest at all. So I jumped at the chance to attend AAD this year and I’m so glad I did! Now I’m totally addicted and trying to figure out what organs I can part with to pay for future trips. No one needs a liver…right? 😉 And since I’m pretty sure you don’t want to read through my top 100 AAD moments, I narrowed it down to five.   The Ghost Tour I was lucky enough to fly over with my pal, Amanda Carlson and our first night in Savannah was a busy one. Right off the plane, then to dinner, and straight to the ghost tour we braved the rain with a bunch of great ladies. Though the tour wasn’t quite spooky enough for me, we did have a few laughs and I had a great time. Vampire Ball The Vampire Ball was great! I loved seeing everyone’s costumes (in fact, the costumes at all of the events were impressive!) and the food was delish! I do recall someone saying they wanted to bathe in the pecan pie. I can’t remember if that was me or not. 😉 My most memorable part of the night had to be telling Kristen Painter that she looked like an ass kisser rather than ass KICKER which was what I’d meant to say. I swear, sometimes my mouth just doesn’t work right. LOL   The Book Signing I was so nervous for the book signing. I mean, what if no one stopped by my table? What if the seller was unable to get my books? I had zero swag and I’m pretty sure Amanda Carlson brought extra sharpies to everything because she knew I’d come totally unprepared! But luckily, they did have my books and people...

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Alexis Hall

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Alexis Hall Today I am pleased to bring you debut author Alexis Hall. Alexis was born in the early 1980s and still thinks the 21st century is the future. To this day, he feels cheated that he lived through a fin de siècle but inexplicably failed to drink a single glass of absinthe, dance with a single courtesan, or stay in a single garret. He can neither cook nor sing, but he can handle a 17th century smallsword, punts from the proper end, and knows how to hotwire a car. He lives in southeast England, with no cats and no children, and fully intends to keep it that way. You can also find him all over the internet, on his website, twitter, and goodreads. Today Alexis is here to talking about his new title, Glitterland (B.’s review HERE), and introduce us to the game of Nabble. Please help me welcome Alexis to That’s What I’m Talking About… From the Author Hello, and welcome to my first ever blog tour, celebrating Riptide Publishing’s release of my first ever novel, Glitterland. Yay! Thank you so much to That’s What I’m Talking About for hosting me. And, to you, dear reader, for stopping by. If you’d like to come with me and keep me company on my virtual wanderings, you can find a full listing of when and where I am here. There’s also some kind of contest type thing happening. The truth is – and already I reveal the rather limited scope of my imagination – quite a lot of the incidental things in Glitterland have a little bit too much reality to them. In the sense that they’re, cough, in my house. Occasionally about my person. One of the things that absolutely isn’t about my person, and has always been solely decorative, is the peacock feather Venetian mask Ash has in his bedroom. I, too, rather admire the beauty of artificial things. If you’d like to win this slightly random souvenir, answer the three questions below (answers in the book) and drop me an email. I’ll announce the winner a handful of days after the end of the tour on the 3rd of September. What other peacock feather themed item does Ash own? What does Darian have tattooed on his hip? What is the name of Chloe’s boutique? The Least Dangerous Game “Nabble is the opposite of Scrabble. Basically you can only play words that aren’t in the dictionary. It’s really simple....

Guest Post & Giveaway: Taryn Kincaid

Guest Post & Giveaway: Taryn Kincaid Today I welcome back romance author Taryn Kincaid. Taryn is an Olympic caliber athlete egg roller and spends a great deal of her time petitioning the U.S.O.C. to introduce a fantail shrimp competition. When she’s not bungee jumping off the Palisades or parasailing up and down the Hudson River, she devotes her time to caring for her aging pet walrus, arranging her voodoo doll-pin collection and practicing rhythmic chants. At this moment, she is busy sweeping up the loose masala chai tea leaves she spilled all over the kitchen floor. (Probably because she needs COFFEE.) Wait. Is that something…sparkly? Taryn hangs around a lot on Facebook and Twitter with her trillions of fans and pops in at Goodreads from time to time. You can catch her on her website, http://tarynkincaid.com, and her blog, http://dreamvoyagers.blogspot.com where she lives for comments! Welcome back, Taryn… Have One on Me! My drink of choice these days is coffee. Coffee, coffee, and more coffee. 12-ounce mugs of hot, steaming, fragrant coffee. Venti, large and super-sized iced coffee on the run from coffee purveyors and fast food shops.  I used to love, love, love, all the frozen lattes and frappes…but the current diet does not permit all that sugar and fat!  And whipped cream…so…yeah…plain old, gorgeous, dark, silky smooth, wonderful coffee. (Although, I admit, sometimes, in the afternoon, I’ll switch over to iced tea, if I think the engine’s been revved a little bit too much, or I’ll be up all night. ) My characters tend to go for the harder stuff.  In Lightning, the heroine, Lily Night, sipped a Sex on the Beach, while waiting for her 1Night Stand date to make his appearance. In Frost, the heroine, Dagney Night, was an aficionado of ice wine, a desert wine made from grapes that are frozen on the vine. Her hero, erotic artist and fire demon Max Raines, finds an interesting use for the beverage in that book! (In Blizzard, it’s a non-alcohol milk shake from Mickey D’s.) But in Heat Wave, my most recent erotic paranormal 1Night Stand story, we’re back to spirits again. There is, of course, reference to the Heat Wave cocktail, as the hero, Max’s cousin, Bhyrne Raines, mixes up a Dark and Stormy (a nod to Thunder) for the heroine, Zena Night, and guzzles down single malt Macallan scotch whisky from a Lalique decanter and tries to curb his lust for Zena.  Kind of difficult when he’s gone into breedspawn,...

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Lynn Viehl

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Lynn Viehl Today I welcome romance and steampunk author Lynn Viehl to That’s What I’m Talking About. Lynn is here today to share a little about her upcoming steampunk series: Disenchanted & Co. Please say hello to Lynn… Telling Mom About Toriana by Lynn Viehl My mother has always been supportive of my writing career; she bought me my first notebook, my first typewriter (and my first bottle of correction fluid.)  She loves to read and has always been willing to look at any of my stories.  This includes the very first novella I wrote (the diary of a Russian scientist exiled after WWIII to Africa, when the dinosaurs come back!) to most of the dark, depressed You’ll Be Really, Really Sorry When I’m Gone blank poetry I wrote in high school and forgot to hide. Mom especially loves historical romance fiction, and probably hoped in secret I’d grow up to be the next Jude Deveraux.  Unfortunately I didn’t, but she was still thrilled for me when I began my pro career writing the SF adventures of a mouthy, genetically enhanced cardio-thoracic surgeon. She also dutifully reads every book I write, too.  Sometimes I have to explain them (the SF duology with alien killer whales as fighter pilots was a bit of a stretch for her) but she’s remained 100% enthusiastic about my work.  This even when she couldn’t always pronounce the characters’ names, figure out how a medieval-era virus mutated Templars into vampires, or exactly why alien killer whales would want to become fighter pilots. For these reasons when I accepted an offer for Disenchanted & Co., my Victorian-era urban fantasy series, I was really excited to tell Mom. This is how our telephone conversation went: Me:  Mom, I sold a new series! Mom:  Sweetheart, I’m so proud.  What are the books about this time?  More vampires? Me:  Nope.  I’m writing about a lady private detective in the Victorian era. Mom:  You sold a historical series?  I love those!  Is it set in London? Me: No, this one takes place in America. Mom:  Where, New York? Me:  The city is called Rumsen. Mom:  That doesn’t sound familiar.  Where is it located? Me:  In a parallel universe. Mom:  A what? Me:  It’s like a copy of our universe where things happened differently.  America isn’t called America over there, either.  It’s called Toriana. Mom:  Why? Me:  Because over there America lost the War of Independence, so we’re all still British. Mom:  Um,...

But it’s rough on relationships. Once, her partner Caleb was her everything: filter, shield, rescuer, lover. The only man who didn’t think her a freak. Then he walked away. Destin turned her back on the FBI to work for a private agency, but now a particularly horrendous case has come up, and her boss wants her paired with only the best. For Caleb Durand, leaving Destin was an act of self-preservation. Every time she flung herself headlong into dangerous situations, every time he nursed her through soul-crushing visions, he’d died a little more inside. Now they are forced to work together one last time. Tragedy has changed them both, but Caleb knows if he lowers his shields for an instant, he won’t have an icicle’s chance in hell of resisting the temptation to lose himself in her wild power. But to catch the rapist, it’s exactly what he’ll have to do. Read an excerpt HERE A little about Shiloh:  Shiloh Walker has been writing since she was a kid. Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Sidney Bristol

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Sidney Bristol Today I welcome back one of my favorite peeps, author Sidney Bristol. She’s here today celebrating her new book release, The Harder He Falls, the second title in her So Inked series from Ellora’s Cave. Take it away, Sidney… Hello, and thanks so much to the ever lovely and beautiful Jen for hosting me ON MY BOOK RELEASE DAY! I’m sorry, that was a little too much excitement, wasn’t it? I’ll try to tone it down, but I make no promises. The second book in my So Inked series from Ellora’s Cave releases today. The series focuses on a team of female tattoo artists slinging ink and making a name for themselves in Texas. The Harder He Falls is the second book in this series and follows one of the shops owners, Kellie, as she makes some hard decisions, faces down her worst nightmare and finds love in the arms of a man she never expected to win her over. But that’s the sales pitch. Why don’t we talk about something fun? Did you know there are different styles and even schools of art when it comes to tattoos? While most tattoo artists can do all types of tattoos, everyone has something they’re naturally good at. Well the girls at the So Inked tattoo shop are no different! With The Harder He Falls I wanted to dig into the well-known Japanese elements of tattooing we see everywhere. From t-shirts to phone cases to even your underwear, tattoo art is showing up in all sorts of new places and a lot of it harkens back to the art brought from Japan by artists like Ed Hardy, Yakuza gangsters coming to America, service men stationed in Japan and tourists. Almost every culture has a history of tattooing unique to them. From geometric designs dating back to the first humans, to markings to denote tribes and designs to evoke the power from the art, tattoos have said a lot about us since the earliest of days. Japanese tattoos are a language in and of themselves, that isn’t always appreciated by its American audience. Each traditional element can be manipulated, combined and placed to call upon different powers, mean something specific or say a particular thing about the wearer. For example, a Koi fish depicted swimming up water means that the person is overcoming something. Combined with other flowers, elements or symbols, it can become more specific, speaking to the fragility of life,...
