Review & Giveaway: My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster

Review & Giveaway: My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster My Lady Quicksilver Author: Bec McMaster Reviewer: Twimom Rating: A-, 4 Stars What I’m Talking About: Picking up shortly after the explosive conclusion of Heart of Iron, My Lady Quicksilver focuses on the search for the humanist leader, Mercury, by Sir Jasper Lynch, the commander of the Nighthawks (the blue blood police force). Lynch is determined to capture him, for crimes against the Echelon, including the bombing at the Ivory Tower, the seat of the ruling Echelon’s power. Rosalind is Mercury. Trained as an assassin, Rosalind picked up the humanist cause after her husband’s death. She and her two brothers, Jack and Jeremy, have lead the humanists for several years. However, after the mechs mutinied against her leadership (Book #2) taking Jeremy with them, Rosalind’s focus is no longer with the humanist cause – instead centering most of her energy on finding her younger brother that she raised as her own. You know those series that you just seem to fall more in love with after each successive story? The London Steampunk series is that way for me. Ms. McMaster weaves a wonderful romance in and among an interesting political climate founded on a unique vampire mythology. While one could definitely read My Lady Quicksilver as a stand alone, I recommend starting with the first book so that you get a full grasp of the world. It took me that whole first book to understand the intricacies of the Echelon, blue bloods, vampires, rogues, mechs, humans, and all of the other bits and pieces. Ms. McMaster’s world is complex and so very fascinating. As Mercury, Rosa and Lynch share a healthy respect based in a deep rivalry, which plays out like a game of cat and mouse. They are each drawn to the other, which surprises them both. And after sharing a kiss, neither can forget the other. I love the tension created between the two; however, it is clear that their “relationship” is doomed. A man of the law and a revolutionary leader cannot have an HEA. This adds an element of intrigue for me, as I was constantly trying to figure out HOW things could possible work out for the pair. Now enter Mrs. Rosa Marberry, Lynch’s newly hired secretary. Rosa takes the job in disguise in an effort to learn the whereabouts of her missing brother. Mrs. Marberry represents everything Lynch wanted in his life – a life he will never have. The pair match words...

Book Release Party & Giveaway: Visions of Fire and Ice by Teresa D’Amario

Book Release Party & Giveaway: Visions of Fire and Ice by Teresa D’Amario Today we are celebrating the release of the first-in-a-new-series title by Teresa D’Amario. Visions of Fire and Ice is the exciting new tale about an ancient race of aliens, Egyptian mythology, and true love. About the Book: Trapped on a planet not their own, the Petiri spend their lives hiding the natural gifts that set them apart from the world. They live long and unfulfilled lives, unable to find their soul mates on this backward planet known as Earth. That is until the night Ramose comes face to face with Tamara, a woman whose gifts rival his own. Determined to find why this human is in possession of an ancient magical Petiri relic, he arranges a meeting. But Tamara, embittered from past events, is wary despite lifelong dreams of Ramose and a sure knowledge he is her soul mate. Before long the couple find themselves ensnared in a battle that has raged for millennia in Egypt’s desert. Set, Egyptian God of Chaos, is determined to take his just due: the throne of Osiris. The only way to stop him is for Ramose to put his trust in Tamara, but, first, he must gain the same from her. The ensuing sensual relationship is filled with romance, lust and love. Their relationship is tested by an unnatural evil. Will her powers over fire, combined with his ice be enough to win the day? Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Andrea Speed

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Andrea Speed Andrea Speed joins me today at That’s What I’m Talking About to tell us about her new title, Strange Angels. She is also giving away a digital copy of Prey (Infected #1) to one lucky commenter. Keep reading for details, and please help me welcome Andrea… The next in my series of interviews with characters in my latest book, Strange Angels, I talk with Balor, a Celtic death god. He’s … unusual. I can’t stress that enough. Andrea: Thanks for talking with me. Balor: I have no idea why you want to talk to me. I don’t really play much of a part in this story. Andrea: Wow. You’re so wrong. You play a big part in it. Balor: Well, maybe by accident. Not deliberately. Andrea: That’s debatable. So what would you like to tell readers about yourself? Balor: Um … well, I’m a death god, but I’m retired. Andrea: What does that mean? Balor: I don’t really have any truck with the dead anymore. There’s lots of other death gods, so no one really noticed when I hung it up. Andrea: You can just stop being a death god? Balor: Sure. I mean, the powers don’t go away, but you can set aside the trappings of god-dom and do other things. I did. Andrea: Yes, your realm is .. interesting. Without spoiling anything, why do you exist in that realm? Balor: Sometimes a world just reflects your emotional state. Andrea: Umm, that really doesn’t explain it at all. Balor: How familiar with my story are you? Andrea: Not very. Balor: Well, Human myths have it that my own grandson killed me and plucked out my death eye, but that isn’t true. I kinda wish it were true, ’cause the reality is horrible. Andrea: What actually happened? Balor: (sighs) Please keep in mind I was kind of a dick back then. What happened is, I opened my eye on him. Andrea: Your death eye? Balor: It’s the only eye I have. Andrea: And he died? Balor: He was disintigrated, as are most things when I open the eye. It’s called a death eye for lack of a better term, but it can shred everything, breaking it down to constituate atoms. I can rip holes in the space-time continuum if I want. It’s why I rarely open my eye. Andrea: But how do you see? Balor: Oh, I can’t see out of my death eye. Andrea: What? Balor: It’s only...

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Amanda Bonilla

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Amanda Bonilla Please help me welcome urban fantasy author, Amanda Bonilla, to That’s What I’m Talking About. I had the privilege of meeting Amanda at Authors After Dark in August this year. She is here today to share her Top 5 moments from AADSAV. She’s also generously giving away one (1) e-copy of her new release Vengeance Borne. Details of the giveaway are below. It is open internationally! Take it away, Amanda… My Top 5 Authors After Dark Moments Thanks so much to Jen and the rest of the crew for having me as a guest today! Until AAD Savannah, I was a conference virgin. There aren’t many events for authors in my neck of the woods and very few in the northwest at all. So I jumped at the chance to attend AAD this year and I’m so glad I did! Now I’m totally addicted and trying to figure out what organs I can part with to pay for future trips. No one needs a liver…right? 😉 And since I’m pretty sure you don’t want to read through my top 100 AAD moments, I narrowed it down to five.   The Ghost Tour I was lucky enough to fly over with my pal, Amanda Carlson and our first night in Savannah was a busy one. Right off the plane, then to dinner, and straight to the ghost tour we braved the rain with a bunch of great ladies. Though the tour wasn’t quite spooky enough for me, we did have a few laughs and I had a great time. Vampire Ball The Vampire Ball was great! I loved seeing everyone’s costumes (in fact, the costumes at all of the events were impressive!) and the food was delish! I do recall someone saying they wanted to bathe in the pecan pie. I can’t remember if that was me or not. 😉 My most memorable part of the night had to be telling Kristen Painter that she looked like an ass kisser rather than ass KICKER which was what I’d meant to say. I swear, sometimes my mouth just doesn’t work right. LOL   The Book Signing I was so nervous for the book signing. I mean, what if no one stopped by my table? What if the seller was unable to get my books? I had zero swag and I’m pretty sure Amanda Carlson brought extra sharpies to everything because she knew I’d come totally unprepared! But luckily, they did have my books and people...

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Alexis Hall

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Alexis Hall Today I am pleased to bring you debut author Alexis Hall. Alexis was born in the early 1980s and still thinks the 21st century is the future. To this day, he feels cheated that he lived through a fin de siècle but inexplicably failed to drink a single glass of absinthe, dance with a single courtesan, or stay in a single garret. He can neither cook nor sing, but he can handle a 17th century smallsword, punts from the proper end, and knows how to hotwire a car. He lives in southeast England, with no cats and no children, and fully intends to keep it that way. You can also find him all over the internet, on his website, twitter, and goodreads. Today Alexis is here to talking about his new title, Glitterland (B.’s review HERE), and introduce us to the game of Nabble. Please help me welcome Alexis to That’s What I’m Talking About… From the Author Hello, and welcome to my first ever blog tour, celebrating Riptide Publishing’s release of my first ever novel, Glitterland. Yay! Thank you so much to That’s What I’m Talking About for hosting me. And, to you, dear reader, for stopping by. If you’d like to come with me and keep me company on my virtual wanderings, you can find a full listing of when and where I am here. There’s also some kind of contest type thing happening. The truth is – and already I reveal the rather limited scope of my imagination – quite a lot of the incidental things in Glitterland have a little bit too much reality to them. In the sense that they’re, cough, in my house. Occasionally about my person. One of the things that absolutely isn’t about my person, and has always been solely decorative, is the peacock feather Venetian mask Ash has in his bedroom. I, too, rather admire the beauty of artificial things. If you’d like to win this slightly random souvenir, answer the three questions below (answers in the book) and drop me an email. I’ll announce the winner a handful of days after the end of the tour on the 3rd of September. What other peacock feather themed item does Ash own? What does Darian have tattooed on his hip? What is the name of Chloe’s boutique? The Least Dangerous Game “Nabble is the opposite of Scrabble. Basically you can only play words that aren’t in the dictionary. It’s really simple....

Guest Post & Giveaway: Taryn Kincaid

Guest Post & Giveaway: Taryn Kincaid Today I welcome back romance author Taryn Kincaid. Taryn is an Olympic caliber athlete egg roller and spends a great deal of her time petitioning the U.S.O.C. to introduce a fantail shrimp competition. When she’s not bungee jumping off the Palisades or parasailing up and down the Hudson River, she devotes her time to caring for her aging pet walrus, arranging her voodoo doll-pin collection and practicing rhythmic chants. At this moment, she is busy sweeping up the loose masala chai tea leaves she spilled all over the kitchen floor. (Probably because she needs COFFEE.) Wait. Is that something…sparkly? Taryn hangs around a lot on Facebook and Twitter with her trillions of fans and pops in at Goodreads from time to time. You can catch her on her website, http://tarynkincaid.com, and her blog, http://dreamvoyagers.blogspot.com where she lives for comments! Welcome back, Taryn… Have One on Me! My drink of choice these days is coffee. Coffee, coffee, and more coffee. 12-ounce mugs of hot, steaming, fragrant coffee. Venti, large and super-sized iced coffee on the run from coffee purveyors and fast food shops.  I used to love, love, love, all the frozen lattes and frappes…but the current diet does not permit all that sugar and fat!  And whipped cream…so…yeah…plain old, gorgeous, dark, silky smooth, wonderful coffee. (Although, I admit, sometimes, in the afternoon, I’ll switch over to iced tea, if I think the engine’s been revved a little bit too much, or I’ll be up all night. ) My characters tend to go for the harder stuff.  In Lightning, the heroine, Lily Night, sipped a Sex on the Beach, while waiting for her 1Night Stand date to make his appearance. In Frost, the heroine, Dagney Night, was an aficionado of ice wine, a desert wine made from grapes that are frozen on the vine. Her hero, erotic artist and fire demon Max Raines, finds an interesting use for the beverage in that book! (In Blizzard, it’s a non-alcohol milk shake from Mickey D’s.) But in Heat Wave, my most recent erotic paranormal 1Night Stand story, we’re back to spirits again. There is, of course, reference to the Heat Wave cocktail, as the hero, Max’s cousin, Bhyrne Raines, mixes up a Dark and Stormy (a nod to Thunder) for the heroine, Zena Night, and guzzles down single malt Macallan scotch whisky from a Lalique decanter and tries to curb his lust for Zena.  Kind of difficult when he’s gone into breedspawn,...
