Review: Unshakeable Faith

Review: Unshakeable Faith Unshakeable Faith Author: Lisa Worrall  Release Date: Nov. 28, 2011 Publisher: Dreamspinner Press ISBN: #978-1613722671 Genre: LGBT – M/M Romance Format(s): Paperback (250 pgs), e-book Book Source: NetGalley About the book: Of all the bars in all the towns in all the world, the stranger walks into Brody Tyler’s. With no memory and a name he chose from a newspaper, Nash is a gamble—one Brody is willing to take. It isn’t long before Brody and Nash fall in love, but then a tragic accident shatters their cozy world, resetting Nash’s memory once again. The “new” Nash Walker is a businessman with a bottom line, and he doesn’t care what or who gets stomped on. Waking up in a hospital bed after a hit-and-run with no idea where he’s been for the past six months is bad enough, but someone trying to kill him is even worse. Enter Brody Tyler, accidental bodyguard. Brody’s determined to help Nash remember and bring back the man he loves. Nash thinks Brody’s a drop-dead gorgeous pain in the ass. If only he could remember…. What B is talking about: Brody Tyler has a habit of picking up strays. If only he’d stick to a pet, rather than taking in men who are down-on-their-luck. But when a gorgeous amnesiac with the most beautiful green eyes he’s ever seen walks into his bar, frightened and unbearably lost, he knows two things: that he’s a total goner, and that he just got himself a new roommate. This is one of the funniest, most pleasantly frustrating, yet lovely m/m romances I’ve read yet. Brody and Nash are wonderful together, Brody’s openness and acceptance being the perfect haven where Nash can recreate himself and begin a new life. Brody is the perfect lover, and Worrall writes him so sweetly, that I couldn’t stand to see him hurt anymore than his friends could.  There aren’t any weak characters, save for Nash’s brother, Ben, in Unshakeable Faith, with even most of the minor characters providing good laughs and believable affection. The staff at Brody’s bar is especially entertaining, and his best friend, Wyatt, in particular, is an absolute treat. Hannah, Nash’s housekeeper, is similarly enjoyable, as are his mother and sister. As with any good story, some things must get worse before they can get better, and that’s doubly true of Unshakeable Faith. Nash makes some horrendous mistakes during the second part of his journey, and I wanted to knock some...

Review: A Bid For Love

Review: A Bid For Love A Bid For Love Author: KT Grant  Release Date: Feb. 12, 2012 Publisher: Decadent 1 Night Stand Story Genre: Contemporary Romance, m/m, Novella Format(s): e-book Book Source: Publisher About the book: Anthony Conlin is a forty-one year old workaholic in love with his twenty-nine year old neighbor, Reece Whitmore, who looks like he belongs on the cover of GQ magazine. Anthony longs for Reece to the point of obsession, but doesn’t think he stands a chance because of their difference in age, his graying hair and a less than rock hard physique. When Anthony’s friend, Jagger Castillo urges Anthony to try the matching services of One Night Stand, Anthony still refuses because of his crush on Reece. But Jagger, along with the help of Madame Evangeline, the owner of the 1NS has something up their sleeves to make certain Anthony and Reece finally get together. A charity auction sets the stage and rolls into motion a night Anthony and Reece will never forget. What I’m talking about: Tony and Reese have been neighbors for a few years, both men are completely hung up on and attracted to the other. However, neither is willing to make the first move, that is until Reese decides he will take a chance. But his flirting doesn’t get far, and poor Tony is completely tongue-tied.  When a mutual acquaintance offers Reese a way into Tony’s bed (and hopefully his heart), Reese jumps at the chance for love. This was my first 1 Night Stand (1NS) novella and the second novella I’ve read by KT Grant. I am impressed with her ability to create intimate romances in such a short space. The characters are real enough, relatable on some level, and don’t require lots of background and superfluous details to enjoy the story. We know these two men long for each other, and Ms. Grant is able to quickly build the need and frustration. For those wondering, each 1NS story is independent, using a somewhat mysterious character, Madame Evangeline, as a match maker with a 100% track record in finding the perfect long-term mate. In this book it’s a suitable vehicle used to get the men together in a fairly short span.  I adored Tony and Reece. They both were a bit shy, but once together, passion explodes. And wow–there are some completely sexy scenes involving a hot tub! At times I thought that Tony was too hung up on the age difference and the...

Review: Mountain Claiming

Review: Mountain Claiming Mountain Claiming Author: L. C. Dean  Release Date: July 2011 Publisher: Decadent Publishing 1 Night Stand Series Genre: GLBT, M/M Romance Format(s): e-book Book Source: Publisher/Author About the book: When Madame Eve and her 1 Night Stand offer a chance at escape, Daniel Long drops the yoke of submission and runs to the Castillo Resort, Grand Turk and the hope of a future without repression. Everything on the island steals his breath including the gorgeous hotel owner, Jagger Castillo. Daniel quickly discovers he’s out of bondage and way out of his comfort zone. Jagger isn’t expecting the gift Madame Eve drops on his doorstep, but once he realizes how precious the present is, he won’t let go without a fight. The only question is, can he claim Daniel before the night slips away and cheats them both of paradise. What B is talking about: Shy, haunted Daniel Long knows he doesn’t fit in among the happy guests at the Castillo Resort, but the lure of escape and possibility offered by the mysterious Madame Eve was just too hard to resist. His one hope is that a 1 Night Stand may be the very thing he needs to begin a whole new life. Jagger Castillo loves his life in a resort by the sea, but has given up on the idea of his own happily ever after. One look at Daniel, though, and his opinion is decidedly altered. If only he could break through the wall the beautiful mountain of a man is hiding behind and discover the desires he keeps so well hidden. Mountain Claiming is a quick, easy-to-read short, with a big story to tell. Dean packs a lot of emotional tension in a relatively few pages. Daniel is easy to fall in love with and he and Jagger are wonderful together as they try to find their way to true happiness.  The idea of having only one night to forever change the course of a life and find true love guarantees that there’s little time for potentially burdensome details, but in this case I’d have happily read any additional particulars Dean might have offered. There seems to be so much more to these two characters than can be explored in such a short tale, but, as Jagger so neatly puts it, “Dusk to dawn is not much time for a fresh start, so quit worrying about me and get on with discovering what gives you joy.” Dean...

Why I Like RoM/Mmmmance

Why I Like RoM/Mmmmance Today B takes over and tells us why she loves to read m/m romances… When I was first asked to consider writing an article about this topic, I thought it would be fairly easy to do. I’ve since decided that’s not the case. M/m fiction is hot, sure. And can be sweet, too. But so is a lot of hot romance or erotica. Is it that sex between two men is still considered taboo by some, and therefore a guilty pleasure? Possibly, except that I don’t feel even a twinge of guilt when reading it. Most of the m/m authors I’ve read are women, so it’s not about a difference in the gender perspective of the author, either. And so on, and so on… So, what is it about m/m fiction that makes my toes wiggle? My journey towards m/m fiction began with several ménage stories, each involving one woman and two men. Guess which parts were my favorites? Yep. The ones that involved just the men together. Once I figured that out, it didn’t take me long to delve into m/m romance.  So, that leaves me with the idea that it’s the love between men that’s so appealing. And I think maybe that’s because it has nothing to do with me at all. In any story with a female narrator or main character, I tend to view the happenings of the novel through her eyes. Her experiences, at least partly, become mine within the context of the story. I’ve read many wonderful books that have made stepping into the heroine’s shoes for a while an absolute delight: brilliant novels with intelligent, strong leading women, engaging plots that have kept me turning pages far past any reasonable bedtime, and delicious intimacy that demanded a few rereads, at least. What a wonderful escape they can be! But, with m/m fiction, more specifically, erotica, it’s easy to just watch the story play out, and hurt and hope for the men involved as a spectator. I cheer for them from the sidelines, am horrified and angered on their behalf when things go badly, and could happily imagine buying them a drink (or four) and listen to anything they wanted to tell me for hours on end. And if they’re content when the novel is done, then I’m generally ecstatic as a reader.  M/m eroticism, at least in the books I’ve read, also tends to be very unguarded and deliberate. Seduction seems to...

Review: The Prince’s Groom

Review: The Prince’s Groom The Prince’s Groom Author: KT Grant  Release Date: November 12, 2010 Publisher: Ravenous Romance Book #2 of a Pirate-Themed Series ISBN #: 9781607773702 Genre: M/M Romance, Pirates Format(s):  e-book From the author’s website: Mr. Martin, the former first mate of an infamous pirate captain is mourning the loss of his young lover. He and Thomas de Fleurre, an exiled prince turned gentleman landowner, had a passionate affair on a tropical island paradise for a very short time. Thomas decides to end their relationship since Martin is a wanted man on the run for a twenty-year-old crime he didn’t commit. Thomas longs for the frank speaking Martin, who not only ravaged his body, but his heart and soul. He has moved on, finding happiness in the arms of another man, but can’t stop thinking about those hot steamy nights where Martin made his every fantasy become a reality. Martin’s past comes back to haunt him as he arrives on Thomas’s doorstep to finish what they started. And then Martin puts his life on the line to save Thomas from an unstable woman who is obsessed with claiming Thomas as her own. With a dangerous highwayman also terrorizing the land who has close ties to Martin, Thomas becomes a target in a deadly game of cat and mouse. It’s up to Martin to save Thomas and hope they can sail away on their tide of passion, where he will end up being the Prince’s groom.  What I’m talking about: It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed an M/M romance and so I jumped to purchase KT Grant’s (aka @katiebabs on Twitter) debut M/M story.  The book is the second in her pirate-themed series, following The Princess’s Bride.  I did not read the first book and I’m sorry that I didn’t prior to reading The Prince’s Groom. The story begins with the wedding of Thomas’s sister, Daisy, to former pirate, Chelsey. We discover that Thomas and Martin are in the midst of an incredibly hot fling, but Thomas feels obligated to go back home and perform the duties his status as a gentleman landowner holds. He longs for Martin to come with him, but because he is an outlaw, it just won’t work. Fast forward one year: Thomas has upheld his duties, and although he has another lover, he is lonely and misses Martin.  Meanwhile, Ramona, the youngest daughter of the local sherriff, Viscount Alastair Veiga, has set her deranged sights on...

Review of Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love

Review of Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love Author: Franze & Andaerle Release Date: August 2009 Publisher: Bruno Gmunder Verlag Gmbh ISBN: #3867870365 Genre: Graphic Novel, M/M erotica I won this book from the wonderful Marq at Love 2 Read For Fun  From Goodreads: The rough and merciless pirate Black Wade and his band are the scare of the seven seas. And just like his greed for gold is insatiable, his sexual craving knows no boundaries as well: When they board a British ship, Wade takes Lieutenant Jack Wilkins as a prisoner to satisfy his lust. At first Wilkins struggles with all his might, but soon he has to acknowledge that he actually has pleasure in the eager sexual encounters with the handsome pirate. In the meantime his fiancée Annabeth is waiting wistfully for the return of Jack, not knowing if he’s still alive. And on the pirate ship emotions are running high as well: Buccaneer Marak keeps a jealous watch over the prisoner Jack. He would love to polish Wade’s gun barrel himself. Due to the rising nervousness Wade realizes that he cannot allow himself the tender feelings he begins to have for Jack. To prove how merciless he is, he maroons Jack on a raft and relinquishes him to the forces of the wide ocean. But that’s nowhere near the end of the story… What I’m talking about: Okay, so let’s get this out of the way right up front… I liken reading Black Wade to guys who say “I read Playboy for the articles.” While those articles may be thought-provoking and interesting, we all know it wasn’t the driving reason for buying the magazine. The key to reading a graphic novel is that you need to read both the written words as well as the detailed pictures that go with each panel/scene. Because there are so few words, reading them alone will not give you the entire story. Black Wade is no exception to this rule. There are several key plot points and underlying facts that can only be discovered from the artwork. For example, in the very beginning of the story Lieutenant Jack Wilkins lays down for a rest on his voyage home and fantasizes about his fiancee. But what we see is that fantasy turn from Annabeth into a rather large phallic, and only then does Jack find his release. It’s a key part of the developing story, told to the reader via images. And...

Review of The Sin Eater’s Prince

Review of The Sin Eater’s Prince The Sin Eater’s Prince Author: Keta Diablo Release Date: January 2010 Publisher: Ravenous Romance ISBN: #978-1-60777-319-1 Genre: Paranormal Romance, M/M Romance From the author’s website: Owen Rhys, the sin eater of his village in Wales, has been shunned by the local villagers his entire life—except by Andras Maddock, the local physician. In love with the one man he thinks will never return that love, Owen is shocked when Andras saves him from death at the hands of a vampire and admits he cares deeply for Owen. Dagan, son of Traherne, the vampire Andras killed to save Owen, will stop at nothing to avenge his father’s death and obtain the Prince of Wales’s mystic sword from Andras. The divine claymore holds the power to grant immunity from the sun’s harsh rays—the one exemption the dark Lords of the Underworld has sought for centuries. Star-crossed love, sorcery, and bloodlust collide on a vengeful path where only one side can remain. What I’m talking about: Owen is one of those perfect males… a quiet, humble man… one that is gorgeous, but doesn’t know it, one that gives of himself day after day and expects nothing in return. From the beginning I fell for Owen. I was so worried he would get his heart stomped upon or end up being used and tossed away.  But someone else noticed how amazing Owen is… Andras, small town physician and vampire-in-hiding. The two admire each other from afar, never expecting their lust and desire to be returned. Yet fate brings them together and leads them on a wonderful journey. Their love story is uncomplicated and full of life. They don’t play games with one another and act on their desires almost immediately in the book (although it has been about 5 years of backstory for the two of them.) Their union does not disappoint. Their love making is HOT and full of beautiful emotions that pulled on my heart strings. There is detailed m/m erotic sex, so if you are at all leery of m/m romance, you may want to steer clear. However, I found the romance so beautiful, it didn’t matter to me what their sexual preferences were. But, this story does not end with the union of Owen and Andras. Enter Dagan, long tooth (vampire) and bad guy extraordinaire. His father was slain by Andras and now Dagan wants revenge – as well as the magical sword which Andras holds. In order to defeat...

Not that there is anything wrong with that…

Not that there is anything wrong with that… Recently I won a free ebook from KC at SmokingHotBooks. She blogged over the first 2 weeks in February with the theme “14 days of man love.” Although I had never read any m/m (male/male) romance books, I figured I would enter the contest to win a free book. When KC notified me that I WON, I was so excited. But then I thought “What will I read?” She has been going on and on about all these great m/m books she reads, but to be honest, they didn’t sound all that appealing to me. Not to mention I am a HUGE paranormal fan – I just don’t read contemporary or historical books/romance books. It seemed that all of the m/m books were contemporary. After asking KC for advice, I selected the book Without Reservations, by J. L. Langley for my prize. I selected it because it is paranormal at heart – a story about werewolves. I figured I could handle werewolves. My synopsis: Chay is a werewolf that has waited is whole life for his pre-destined mate to come along. As a vet, he knows the injured wolf brought into his office is more than just a wolf, it’s another werewolf and his mate. Imagine Chay’s shock when he discovers his mate is male. Keyton has been hurt by a straight male wolf before. He’s not ready to jump into another relationship, even with his pre-destined mate. But he cannot deny his attraction to Chay. The two male wolves decide to jump into their relationship and never regret it. The community is super excepting and the few that don’t, well they come around quickly. It’s seems a bit too easy to me, but this is paranormal romance! The story line was interesting and fun. There is a bit of “who done it” and the action was a good mix with the sex. The sex was um, *fans herself* HOT. And there is a lot of it. If you are someone looking to break into m/m and are a bit leery of the sex, this may not be for you. The males are happy to explore each other and the mating pheromones draw them together often. The romance was a bit cheesy at times, the nickname Chay gives to his mate “Lil Bit” is a bit well, annoying. But the feelings are mostly well written. Every once and a while the dialogue seems a bit to “sweet” and overly...
