Quickie Review – Bound by Deception

Quickie Review – Bound by Deception Quickie Review: Bound by Deception Author: Christa Paige Release Date: available now Publisher: Ebook by Liquid Silver Books Blood-Vine Series Book #1 ISBN: #978-1-59578-600-5 Genre: Paranormal Romance/Novella length NOTE: This book was given to me by the author after I told her how much I enjoyed her second Blood-Vine story, Bound by Rebellion (review HERE).  In order to find a compatible mate, Anna undergoes the ancient blood-rite of her people. She is shocked to learn that her brother has interfered with the process and can’t be sure that Dimitri is her true mate. However, soon Anna realizes that her desire for Dimitri is unstoppable and the two come together in an explosion of passion. Waiting in the wings is a dangerous male who feels that Anna is his to claim. Will Dimitri be able to complete the bonding and protect his beloved Anna in time? It’s always a bit tough going backwards and read an earlier story in a book series, but not in this case.  In Bound by Rebellion, main characters Luke and Kat discuss Anna (Luke’s sister) and Dimitri and the situation that surrounds their story.  Reading Bound by Deception filled in several details and completed the background picture for me. Anna and Dimitri’s story is sexy, quick-paced and exciting. Although not as well-developed as the second Blood-Vine book, it provides greater detail on the origins of the Kan Asma people and the blood-rite mating process, which proved very interesting. Anna and Dimitri are sizzling and their story is a good one. I recommend this short-length book and suggest you read it before reading Bound by Rebellion, but as I discovered, it isn’t necessary. My...

Bound By Rebellion – Review

Bound By Rebellion – Review Bound by Rebellion Author: Christa Paige   Release Date: February 2010 Publisher: Liquid Silver ebooks   Blood-Vine Series Book #2  ISBN: #978-1-59578-670-8 Genre: Paranormal Romance/Novella lengthNote: An e-copy of this book was given to me by the author for review purposes. From the author’s website: Katiya and Lucas are blood-bound mates. Nearly a decade ago, their idyllic relationship quickly devolved into one of animosity. Furious with Luke’s meddling in her privacy, she left him. Except, they have a pesky issue that continues to bind them together. They must carry on, sharing their blood, or face the deadly consequences, literally. Ten years have past since Kat moved out. Now, their estrangement firmly in place, she is desperate to move on with her life. So desperate in fact, that she will even rebel against the long-held convictions of her people. Secretly, over the past several months, she has formed an infatuation with a co-worker and, tonight, she plans to take it to the next level. Luke is unhappy with their tenuous situation. He is prepared to do anything to win her back. He wants her in his arms where he can show her the depths of his passion. If seduction is the key to their reconciliation, he is more than ready to take her to new levels of pleasure. He needs her home, with him, to keep her safe and secure. Once Kat takes a drastic step to alter her life, she comes face-to-face with a sinister threat. Lucas must find her in time and, when he does, he promises, on his life, that nothing will keep them apart ever again. What I’m talking about: When we first meet Kat and Luke, we discover that they are separated and Kat is ready to move on. In the beginning, we find out that Kat must maintain a “relationship” with her estranged mate so that he can survive (needs her blood) and she can stay young.  She convinces herself (and me) that it is an awful arrangement. But as I read on, I realized that Kat was also a spoiled brat.  In comes Daniel: handsome co-worker and Kat’s prospective romance. She hasn’t been out with anyone since Luke and is finally ready to take that chance. Immediately we know that something isn’t quite right with Daniel, and I enjoyed trying to figure out what it was (and how Luke would figure it out). The first thing I noticed about Ms. Paige’s work was the exquisite...

Early Review – Siren’s Call

Early Review – Siren’s Call Siren’s Call Author: Devyn Quinn Release Date: August 3, 2010 Publisher: Signet EclipseDark Tide Series Book #1 ISBN: # Genre: Paranormal Romance/Adventure NOTE: An electronic copy of this book was given to me by the author for the purposes of review. From the author’s website: Between desire and love there are some things that can’t stay buried, even in the deep of the ocean. As a woman with a secret, lighthouse keeper Tessa Lonike savors her solitude on the island of Little Mer, off the coast of Maine. During a violent storm, Tessa spots a man thrashing in the ice cold waters and dives in to save him, using her ability as a mermaid to easily pull him to shore. When Kenneth Randall awakens on the beach he is alone, left with the haunting memory of his beautiful, flame-haired savior. But a year later, when Kenneth meets her again, he’s determined not to let Tessa slip away. Just as the desire between them begins to burn, Tessa’s archaeologist ex-lover comes back to town with a tantalizing clue to her murky heritage. The trio travel to the Mediterranean in search of answers, and when Tessa inadvertently opens an underwater portal they find a lost mermaid city. But in the deep, not everything is as it seems, and Tessa must decide if she wants to take her place as the royal heir, or follow the call of her heart… What I’m talking about: Siren’s Call starts out with Kenneth, a lonely man at his lowest point. We get a quick idea of his turmoil in the prologue, and then jump forward to “present day” in the first chapter. Now we have a man who is ready to live again and wants to thank the mysterious woman that saved him all those months ago.  Kenneth searches out Tessa, and decides to stick around after meeting her. He is immediately attracted to her, subconsciously knowing there is more to her rescue than she is telling.  What I love about this story is that the secrets are shared right away. The first night Kenneth is on the island, he discovers that Tessa is a mermaid. And they don’t tiptoe around this or their individual pasts. They open up and they act on their mutual attraction. This is a refreshing change from books where secrets are held until the last chapter of the story. Their attraction is hot and their banter is real. The story...

Midnight Breed Series – Guest Review

Midnight Breed Series – Guest Review Welcome to Day 3 of my Lara Adrian/Midnight Breed Event and Giveaway. Please say hello to my dear friend and fellow book lover, Una.  She has stopped by to give us her thoughts on the books that comprise the wonderful Midnight Breed Series by Lara Adrian.   Una, welcome to my blog, That’s What I’m Talking About… I just want to share with my readers that YOU are the reason I first read Lara’s books. Una sent me her copies of the first five books in the series so that I could catch up. Of course I loved them so much that I had to go out and get my own set!  Thanks for coming by! Thanks, Jen. I do enjoy Lara’s books and I am happy to share my thoughts with you and your readers.  These are my thoughts as I finished each book. It’s a wonderful series that I recommend to all, and if you haven’t read them, you really need to start with the first book. BOOK 1: Kissed by Midnight I picked up this book by recommendation from a book buddy, and I am I so glad I did.  The writing is spectacular.   It’s a new and fresh take on the vampire genre; compelling, balanced with romance and action.   There are dark mysterious men and strong willed women, joined in a battle to keep a secret society remain secret.  I found the characters intriguing and enjoyed the introduction to this new and mysterious world.  Ms. Adrian has captured me and I must read the next installment. BOOK 2: Kiss of Crimson I am truly enjoying this vampire mythology story.  The strength of the characters and the ease of the writing make this a great series to be reading.  I enjoy the flow of the plot and the different characters.   BOOK 3: Midnight Awakening This is a fabulous continuation of the first two novels.  The intensity and development of the female characters is a wonderful contrast to the unfolding of the male characters.  It is truly a great read! BOOK 4: Midnight Rising Rio’s book was fabulous!  A great ride and definitely up to par with the previous three books.   BOOK 5: Veil of Midnight A great [new] novel in this series complete with another heroine that can hold her own.  The action was good, the characters continue to develop in interesting ways and the plot continues to thicken in this war. ...

Dark Succession – Review

Dark Succession – Review Dark Succession Author: Teresa D’Amario Release Date: April 20, 2010 ebook format Publisher: Freya’s BowerTrue Mate Series Book #2 ISBN: 978-1-936222-20-9 Genre: Paranormal Romance / Shifter From the author’s website: Nora Hunt is the daughter of former pack leader Sean Hunt and niece to Kieran Hunt. Emotionally and physically scarred after being held captive for weeks, she’s finally ready to move on with her life. But when she meets Ryland, she discovers not only a world of darkness and pain, but discovers Ryland may not be any better than those who held her captive all those weeks. When Ryland Keegan steps in as Alpha of his dead brother’s pack, he inherits a pack of savage rogue wolven, as well as a legacy of violence, lies and five women held captive within the pack’s confines. But when Ryland’s pack members start dying one at a time, he must decide if Nora is the catalyst or the killer. Can he trust his True Mate? Or will he be relegated to a life of leading the dregs of Wolven society? What I’m talking about: Dark Succession is an excellent mixture of action and romance, which alone made for a wonderful read. However, I was glued to the pages of this book because of the excellent story telling and an gripping “whodunit” plot line. Ryland’s pack members are being killed off and he has no idea who is doing it or why it is happening. In addition, someone keeps breaking into Ryland’s den, and he finds a mysterious coded diary that his dead brother left behind. Ryland doesn’t know who can help him, and after he has been lied to and hurt by his own family so often, he cannot even trust that his True Mate, Nora, is innocent. We are introduced to a wonderful cast of characters and I found myself constantly looking for a hint or clue that would help me solve the mysteries.  I could not put this book down. On top the great whodunit story, we have Nora: our heroine. Nora is a shewolf and daughter of her pack’s former leader. She is strong, but was destroyed by her own capture and torture and is no longer the confident shewolf she once was. (We read about her captivity in the first book, She Wolf.) What I love about Nora is that we watch her grow from the weak shell of her former self to the strong alpha-bitch she was...

WE LOVE GENA WEEK – Day #5: Review of The Darkest Passion

WE LOVE GENA WEEK – Day #5: Review of The Darkest Passion In celebration of Tuesday’s release, both Bells and I have our ARC-reviews of The Darkest Passion. You can read mine below and visit Hanging With Bells for her review. The Darkest Passion Author: Gena Showalter  Release Date: May 25, 2010 Publisher: Harlequin Publishing Lords of the Underworld Series Book #6 ISBN: #0373774559 NOTE: this is an ARC review that I obtained from NetGalley. I did not pay for the book, and I did not receive anything for this review. From the author’s website:      For weeks, the immortal warrior Aeron has sensed an invisible female presence.  An angel–a demon-assassin–has been sent to kill him.  Or has she?  Olivia claims she fell from the heavens, giving up immortality because she couldn’t bear to harm him. But trusting – and falling for – Olivia will endanger them all. So how has this ‘mortal’ with the huge blue eyes already unleashed Aeron’s darkest passion?     Now, with an enemy hot on his trail and his faithful demon companion determined to remove Olivia from his life, Aeron is trapped between duty and consuming desire. Worse still, a new executioner has been sent to do the job Olivia wouldn’t… What I’m talking about:      Ah: Aeron… How I have waiting for you since the beginning!  I have been in love with anticipating Aeron’s book since the first Lords of the Underworld story. And my wait was rewarded with this wonderful story.      My tattooed, black-winged hunk, Aeron, has been tormented by his demon, Wrath, for centuries. Wrath gives Aeron the ability to “see” an individual’s history – all of his/her sins, and creates a need in Aeron to destroy the individual for these sins. Cronus, the god king and ruler over the Lords, placed a curse upon Aeron in the first Lords book, which put him through terrible bloodlust, and he almost went insane. Once the curse was lifted, Aeron was able to get himself back together and maintain some sanity with the calming influence of his “daughter” demon, Legion.  That is until he meets darling Olivia, a true angel. She soothes Aeron and causes Wrath to purr. She gave up her heavenly existence and climbed out of hell to be with Aeron. She is naive, but brave – willing to give up everything just for a little fun and *wink, wink*.      Ms. Showalter does a fantastic job weaving a tale of star-crossed love. Their love story is a...

She Wolf – Review

She Wolf – Review She Wolf Author: Teresa D’Amario  Release Date: available now (ebook) Publisher: Freya’s Bower Publishing ISBN: 1-934069-90-6 True Mates Series Book #1 Genre: Paranormal Romance (Shifter) From the author’s website: A small town veterinarian has a big time problem. She’s not human. Plagued as a child with an extra-sensitive sense of smell, strength, and eyesight, Anna Callaway always thought she was special. But she didn’t understand how special until she met Kieran Hunter. He insists they are True Mates, but he’s not human either. He’s wolven. Kieran is a protector of his race. No longer the Alpha of his pack, he spends his time searching out and punishing any who may reveal their race to humans. While patrolling, he finds two wolven about to kidnap Anna. He battles to protect her, but is surprised to find himself drawn to her in a way he never expected. The couple must learn to deal with their differences before they can address their similarities. But when three men kidnap Anna, she must decide if she is to embrace the wolven way of life, or return to her quiet existence. And whether to abandon the man who claims her as his True Mate. What I’m talking about: From the moment that Anna steps out of the nightclub and into the arms of two  werewolves (wolven) in the opening scene, I was hooked on She Wolf.  In fact the first chapter was one of the best opening sequences to a book I’ve read. It had the right mix of action, interest and emotion. The author perfectly details the scene by allowing the reader to experience the situation using Anna’s better-than-normal sense of smell and inner voice. Anna is accosted by two rough males – she can sense that they are up to no good, but Anna is unaware of the danger she truly faces. Like most humans, she does not know about the existence of shifters, and when she sees one of her attackers start to “go wolf” she assumes it’s all trickery. Then she sees another stranger, but she is drawn to him. I love that when our hero, Kieran, shows up, Anna can sense his goodness. And the first time they touch (innocently!) sparks fly – literally. I’m a big sucker for the “one true mate” love stories and this is one of those stories. Anna and Kieran quickly get to know each other. And although this is definitely an “alpha male” story,...

Taming the Fire Review

Taming the Fire Review Taming the Fire Author: Sydney Croft Release Date: available now Publisher: Bantam Dell ACRO Series Book #4 ISBN: #0385342276 Genre: Paranormal/Erotic Romance From the author’s website: POWER. PLEASURE. DANGER. IT DOESN’T GET ANY HOTTER THAN THIS.       He came to the underground London club for a night of extreme sex play with the enigmatic “Mistress Rik”. But the Special Agent known as Trance is really on a search-and-rescue mission to keep her alive. Part predator, Ulrika “Rik” Jaegar possesses feral powers that make her a danger to others–and to herself. That’s why the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives (ACRO) wants to recruit her to their side….To do so, Trance will have to pull off the impossible: capture and control Rik, both woman and beast.       On the run from the deadly agency that changed her into a pleasure-seeking shape shifter, Rik uses sex to rein in her own raging desires. Operating on pure instinct, she trusts no one…especially the magnificent alpha male with the power to seduce her into submission. An undercover agent with unique hypnotic gifts, Trance is surprised by his instinct to hold Rik and keep her safe — but he has a job to do. And as he hunts her down, as Rik and Trance are thrust into the ultimate game of domination and submission, they’ll enter a place where surrender is their sole hope of survival — and the only thing that can tame the wild beast in both of them… What I’m talking about:       This is the fourth book in the ACRO series, but it is the first book of a new “story arc” within the ACRO world.       The story opens with ACRO agent Trance trying to bring in shifter and ex-ITOR agent Rik. Rik is a mistress in a BDSM club and Trance has a bondage/Dom history. The books gives the reader an insight into this underground world, but I just couldn’t connect. I don’t know if it was because of the extreme sex play or just this story, but their sex scenes weren’t emotionally satisfying to me – I just couldn’t grasp their need to Dom/sub over one another.       The story moves quickly with Rik and Trance developing a connection, but building a trust on false pretenses (Trance lies about his true identity.) While on the run, Trance continues to foster the trust with more lies, and of course,...

Lover Mine!

Lover Mine! Lover Mine Author: J. R. Ward Release Date: April 27, 2010 Publisher:New American Library (division of Penguin Group) Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) Series Book #8 ISBN: #0451229851 Genre: Paranormal Romance From the author’s website:      In the darkest corners of the night in Caldwell, New York, a conflict like no other rages. Long divided as a terrifying battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the city is home to a band of brothers born to defend their race: the warrior vampires of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.      John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.      Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates. What I’m talking about:      Just like most other BDB fans, I have been waiting for the release of Lover Mine with every breath over this past year. Actually, I have been waiting since we first met John Matthew (JM) and learned of his true identity back so many books ago. I remember thinking “When will he learn the truth?” But as I watched him grow over the past several books, the answer to that question became moot. Next it was “Who will be his mate?” and when we learned about Xhex, I was all “NO.” But like always, the WARDEN (as she is called by her fans), developed Xhex’s character and JM’s relationship with her wonderfully. Xhex truly is the perfect mate for JM.      After leaving readers of BDB with a cliff hanger at the end of Lover Avenged (April 2009), Ward picks up the story about 4 weeks after Xhex was abducted by Lash (really...

Seduced by the Storm

Seduced by the Storm Seduced by the Storm Author: Sydney Croft Release Date: available now Publisher: Bantam Dell ACRO Series Book #3 ISBN: #0385340826 Genre: Paranormal/Erotic Romance From the author’s website: DANGER IS THE ULTIMATE APHRODISIAC.       They met in a steamy Florida bar—then spent a night of mind-bending passion. Two secret agents who each possess unique telekinetic gifts—and whose combined sexual powers leave neither of them unscathed. For ex–Navy SEAL Wyatt Kennedy, assigned by the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives to the most treacherous mission of his career, the woman in black leather and lace has just become more than a one-night stand. Because Faith Black is the sole barrier to the success of his mission—and not even Wyatt’s legendary seduction skills can penetrate her deep cover.       Faith’s psychic gifts make her one of the world’s most dangerous women—but she hides a secret pain she shares with no one. Until Wyatt. And Faith has an agenda of her own: using her unique powers to save someone close to her—a move that pits her against a man she thought she’d never see again. For as a deadly hurricane is unleashed across the eastern seaboard, desire reignites between Faith and Wyatt, exposing secrets that thrust them both into harm’s way. With the hurricane sweeping closer—and their erotic hunger for each other growing—these two wary hearts must come together to heal, to trust . . . and to harness the power of a storm that could consume everything in its path.  What I’m talking about:       I really didn’t think that I could like this series more than I already did, but this book pushed my love over the top! At first it seemed to me that I’d get another great story with new players. The action was exciting – a category 5 hurricane ready to slam into New York City… Our heroes must stop it!  The players are sexy and fun, each with their own issues and secrets.       But this book takes the normal way of doing things in a paranormal romance story and tosses the script out the window.  The play between Faith and Wyatt is wonderful. Each with a history of being hurt and each having to bare his/her soul in order to survive. And it doesn’t end there… They have to make life-altering decisions about the mission and their relationship, and what is unique to this series and this story particularly,...
