Review of Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love

Review of Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love Author: Franze & Andaerle Release Date: August 2009 Publisher: Bruno Gmunder Verlag Gmbh ISBN: #3867870365 Genre: Graphic Novel, M/M erotica I won this book from the wonderful Marq at Love 2 Read For Fun  From Goodreads: The rough and merciless pirate Black Wade and his band are the scare of the seven seas. And just like his greed for gold is insatiable, his sexual craving knows no boundaries as well: When they board a British ship, Wade takes Lieutenant Jack Wilkins as a prisoner to satisfy his lust. At first Wilkins struggles with all his might, but soon he has to acknowledge that he actually has pleasure in the eager sexual encounters with the handsome pirate. In the meantime his fiancée Annabeth is waiting wistfully for the return of Jack, not knowing if he’s still alive. And on the pirate ship emotions are running high as well: Buccaneer Marak keeps a jealous watch over the prisoner Jack. He would love to polish Wade’s gun barrel himself. Due to the rising nervousness Wade realizes that he cannot allow himself the tender feelings he begins to have for Jack. To prove how merciless he is, he maroons Jack on a raft and relinquishes him to the forces of the wide ocean. But that’s nowhere near the end of the story… What I’m talking about: Okay, so let’s get this out of the way right up front… I liken reading Black Wade to guys who say “I read Playboy for the articles.” While those articles may be thought-provoking and interesting, we all know it wasn’t the driving reason for buying the magazine. The key to reading a graphic novel is that you need to read both the written words as well as the detailed pictures that go with each panel/scene. Because there are so few words, reading them alone will not give you the entire story. Black Wade is no exception to this rule. There are several key plot points and underlying facts that can only be discovered from the artwork. For example, in the very beginning of the story Lieutenant Jack Wilkins lays down for a rest on his voyage home and fantasizes about his fiancee. But what we see is that fantasy turn from Annabeth into a rather large phallic, and only then does Jack find his release. It’s a key part of the developing story, told to the reader via images. And...

Review of The Sin Eater’s Prince

Review of The Sin Eater’s Prince The Sin Eater’s Prince Author: Keta Diablo Release Date: January 2010 Publisher: Ravenous Romance ISBN: #978-1-60777-319-1 Genre: Paranormal Romance, M/M Romance From the author’s website: Owen Rhys, the sin eater of his village in Wales, has been shunned by the local villagers his entire life—except by Andras Maddock, the local physician. In love with the one man he thinks will never return that love, Owen is shocked when Andras saves him from death at the hands of a vampire and admits he cares deeply for Owen. Dagan, son of Traherne, the vampire Andras killed to save Owen, will stop at nothing to avenge his father’s death and obtain the Prince of Wales’s mystic sword from Andras. The divine claymore holds the power to grant immunity from the sun’s harsh rays—the one exemption the dark Lords of the Underworld has sought for centuries. Star-crossed love, sorcery, and bloodlust collide on a vengeful path where only one side can remain. What I’m talking about: Owen is one of those perfect males… a quiet, humble man… one that is gorgeous, but doesn’t know it, one that gives of himself day after day and expects nothing in return. From the beginning I fell for Owen. I was so worried he would get his heart stomped upon or end up being used and tossed away.  But someone else noticed how amazing Owen is… Andras, small town physician and vampire-in-hiding. The two admire each other from afar, never expecting their lust and desire to be returned. Yet fate brings them together and leads them on a wonderful journey. Their love story is uncomplicated and full of life. They don’t play games with one another and act on their desires almost immediately in the book (although it has been about 5 years of backstory for the two of them.) Their union does not disappoint. Their love making is HOT and full of beautiful emotions that pulled on my heart strings. There is detailed m/m erotic sex, so if you are at all leery of m/m romance, you may want to steer clear. However, I found the romance so beautiful, it didn’t matter to me what their sexual preferences were. But, this story does not end with the union of Owen and Andras. Enter Dagan, long tooth (vampire) and bad guy extraordinaire. His father was slain by Andras and now Dagan wants revenge – as well as the magical sword which Andras holds. In order to defeat...

Bound By Rebellion – Review

Bound By Rebellion – Review Bound by Rebellion Author: Christa Paige   Release Date: February 2010 Publisher: Liquid Silver ebooks   Blood-Vine Series Book #2  ISBN: #978-1-59578-670-8 Genre: Paranormal Romance/Novella lengthNote: An e-copy of this book was given to me by the author for review purposes. From the author’s website: Katiya and Lucas are blood-bound mates. Nearly a decade ago, their idyllic relationship quickly devolved into one of animosity. Furious with Luke’s meddling in her privacy, she left him. Except, they have a pesky issue that continues to bind them together. They must carry on, sharing their blood, or face the deadly consequences, literally. Ten years have past since Kat moved out. Now, their estrangement firmly in place, she is desperate to move on with her life. So desperate in fact, that she will even rebel against the long-held convictions of her people. Secretly, over the past several months, she has formed an infatuation with a co-worker and, tonight, she plans to take it to the next level. Luke is unhappy with their tenuous situation. He is prepared to do anything to win her back. He wants her in his arms where he can show her the depths of his passion. If seduction is the key to their reconciliation, he is more than ready to take her to new levels of pleasure. He needs her home, with him, to keep her safe and secure. Once Kat takes a drastic step to alter her life, she comes face-to-face with a sinister threat. Lucas must find her in time and, when he does, he promises, on his life, that nothing will keep them apart ever again. What I’m talking about: When we first meet Kat and Luke, we discover that they are separated and Kat is ready to move on. In the beginning, we find out that Kat must maintain a “relationship” with her estranged mate so that he can survive (needs her blood) and she can stay young.  She convinces herself (and me) that it is an awful arrangement. But as I read on, I realized that Kat was also a spoiled brat.  In comes Daniel: handsome co-worker and Kat’s prospective romance. She hasn’t been out with anyone since Luke and is finally ready to take that chance. Immediately we know that something isn’t quite right with Daniel, and I enjoyed trying to figure out what it was (and how Luke would figure it out). The first thing I noticed about Ms. Paige’s work was the exquisite...

Magic Bleeds – Book Review

Magic Bleeds – Book Review Magic Bleeds Author: Ilona Andrews Release Date: May 25, 2010 Publisher: ACE Fantasy Kate Daniels Series Book # 4 ISBN: #0441018521 Genre: Urban Fantasy From the author’s website:      Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it rose.      Kate Daniels works for the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle—especially if they involve Atlanta’s shapeshifting community.      When she’s called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar midway between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers there’s a new player in town. One who’s been around for thousands of years—and rode to war at the side of Kate’s father.      This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Lord of the Beasts, to handle. Because this time, Kate will be taking on family… What I’m talking about:      This is one of those books that as soon as you’re finished reading you want to go back and re-read it all over again — you are sad that the experience is over and just want to make it last and last — ESPECIALLY for those that have followed the Kate Daniels series from the first book. Once again, the husband and wife team that is Ilona Andrews does a remarkable job weaving a tale of magic, love, action and mystery.      This book picks up shortly after Book 3: Magic Strikes and the novella (Book 3.5), “Magic Mourns,” end. We quickly find out how bet/date between Beast Lord Curran and Kate goes. But this story is much more than the budding romance and love between these two powerful people. There is a new baddy in town. One that can spread disease with a touch and infect even the Shifters. He also appears to be able to control a group of undead mages. Not a fun day for Kate or Atlanta.      I don’t want to give ANYTHING away, so I’ll make my comment generic and brief. But know this: Magic Bleeds is the best Kate book yet! Kate...

Dark Succession – Review

Dark Succession – Review Dark Succession Author: Teresa D’Amario Release Date: April 20, 2010 ebook format Publisher: Freya’s BowerTrue Mate Series Book #2 ISBN: 978-1-936222-20-9 Genre: Paranormal Romance / Shifter From the author’s website: Nora Hunt is the daughter of former pack leader Sean Hunt and niece to Kieran Hunt. Emotionally and physically scarred after being held captive for weeks, she’s finally ready to move on with her life. But when she meets Ryland, she discovers not only a world of darkness and pain, but discovers Ryland may not be any better than those who held her captive all those weeks. When Ryland Keegan steps in as Alpha of his dead brother’s pack, he inherits a pack of savage rogue wolven, as well as a legacy of violence, lies and five women held captive within the pack’s confines. But when Ryland’s pack members start dying one at a time, he must decide if Nora is the catalyst or the killer. Can he trust his True Mate? Or will he be relegated to a life of leading the dregs of Wolven society? What I’m talking about: Dark Succession is an excellent mixture of action and romance, which alone made for a wonderful read. However, I was glued to the pages of this book because of the excellent story telling and an gripping “whodunit” plot line. Ryland’s pack members are being killed off and he has no idea who is doing it or why it is happening. In addition, someone keeps breaking into Ryland’s den, and he finds a mysterious coded diary that his dead brother left behind. Ryland doesn’t know who can help him, and after he has been lied to and hurt by his own family so often, he cannot even trust that his True Mate, Nora, is innocent. We are introduced to a wonderful cast of characters and I found myself constantly looking for a hint or clue that would help me solve the mysteries.  I could not put this book down. On top the great whodunit story, we have Nora: our heroine. Nora is a shewolf and daughter of her pack’s former leader. She is strong, but was destroyed by her own capture and torture and is no longer the confident shewolf she once was. (We read about her captivity in the first book, She Wolf.) What I love about Nora is that we watch her grow from the weak shell of her former self to the strong alpha-bitch she was...

WE LOVE GENA WEEK – Day #5: Review of The Darkest Passion

WE LOVE GENA WEEK – Day #5: Review of The Darkest Passion In celebration of Tuesday’s release, both Bells and I have our ARC-reviews of The Darkest Passion. You can read mine below and visit Hanging With Bells for her review. The Darkest Passion Author: Gena Showalter  Release Date: May 25, 2010 Publisher: Harlequin Publishing Lords of the Underworld Series Book #6 ISBN: #0373774559 NOTE: this is an ARC review that I obtained from NetGalley. I did not pay for the book, and I did not receive anything for this review. From the author’s website:      For weeks, the immortal warrior Aeron has sensed an invisible female presence.  An angel–a demon-assassin–has been sent to kill him.  Or has she?  Olivia claims she fell from the heavens, giving up immortality because she couldn’t bear to harm him. But trusting – and falling for – Olivia will endanger them all. So how has this ‘mortal’ with the huge blue eyes already unleashed Aeron’s darkest passion?     Now, with an enemy hot on his trail and his faithful demon companion determined to remove Olivia from his life, Aeron is trapped between duty and consuming desire. Worse still, a new executioner has been sent to do the job Olivia wouldn’t… What I’m talking about:      Ah: Aeron… How I have waiting for you since the beginning!  I have been in love with anticipating Aeron’s book since the first Lords of the Underworld story. And my wait was rewarded with this wonderful story.      My tattooed, black-winged hunk, Aeron, has been tormented by his demon, Wrath, for centuries. Wrath gives Aeron the ability to “see” an individual’s history – all of his/her sins, and creates a need in Aeron to destroy the individual for these sins. Cronus, the god king and ruler over the Lords, placed a curse upon Aeron in the first Lords book, which put him through terrible bloodlust, and he almost went insane. Once the curse was lifted, Aeron was able to get himself back together and maintain some sanity with the calming influence of his “daughter” demon, Legion.  That is until he meets darling Olivia, a true angel. She soothes Aeron and causes Wrath to purr. She gave up her heavenly existence and climbed out of hell to be with Aeron. She is naive, but brave – willing to give up everything just for a little fun and *wink, wink*.      Ms. Showalter does a fantastic job weaving a tale of star-crossed love. Their love story is a...

Lover Mine!

Lover Mine! Lover Mine Author: J. R. Ward Release Date: April 27, 2010 Publisher:New American Library (division of Penguin Group) Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) Series Book #8 ISBN: #0451229851 Genre: Paranormal Romance From the author’s website:      In the darkest corners of the night in Caldwell, New York, a conflict like no other rages. Long divided as a terrifying battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the city is home to a band of brothers born to defend their race: the warrior vampires of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.      John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.      Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates. What I’m talking about:      Just like most other BDB fans, I have been waiting for the release of Lover Mine with every breath over this past year. Actually, I have been waiting since we first met John Matthew (JM) and learned of his true identity back so many books ago. I remember thinking “When will he learn the truth?” But as I watched him grow over the past several books, the answer to that question became moot. Next it was “Who will be his mate?” and when we learned about Xhex, I was all “NO.” But like always, the WARDEN (as she is called by her fans), developed Xhex’s character and JM’s relationship with her wonderfully. Xhex truly is the perfect mate for JM.      After leaving readers of BDB with a cliff hanger at the end of Lover Avenged (April 2009), Ward picks up the story about 4 weeks after Xhex was abducted by Lash (really...

Seduced by the Storm

Seduced by the Storm Seduced by the Storm Author: Sydney Croft Release Date: available now Publisher: Bantam Dell ACRO Series Book #3 ISBN: #0385340826 Genre: Paranormal/Erotic Romance From the author’s website: DANGER IS THE ULTIMATE APHRODISIAC.       They met in a steamy Florida bar—then spent a night of mind-bending passion. Two secret agents who each possess unique telekinetic gifts—and whose combined sexual powers leave neither of them unscathed. For ex–Navy SEAL Wyatt Kennedy, assigned by the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives to the most treacherous mission of his career, the woman in black leather and lace has just become more than a one-night stand. Because Faith Black is the sole barrier to the success of his mission—and not even Wyatt’s legendary seduction skills can penetrate her deep cover.       Faith’s psychic gifts make her one of the world’s most dangerous women—but she hides a secret pain she shares with no one. Until Wyatt. And Faith has an agenda of her own: using her unique powers to save someone close to her—a move that pits her against a man she thought she’d never see again. For as a deadly hurricane is unleashed across the eastern seaboard, desire reignites between Faith and Wyatt, exposing secrets that thrust them both into harm’s way. With the hurricane sweeping closer—and their erotic hunger for each other growing—these two wary hearts must come together to heal, to trust . . . and to harness the power of a storm that could consume everything in its path.  What I’m talking about:       I really didn’t think that I could like this series more than I already did, but this book pushed my love over the top! At first it seemed to me that I’d get another great story with new players. The action was exciting – a category 5 hurricane ready to slam into New York City… Our heroes must stop it!  The players are sexy and fun, each with their own issues and secrets.       But this book takes the normal way of doing things in a paranormal romance story and tosses the script out the window.  The play between Faith and Wyatt is wonderful. Each with a history of being hurt and each having to bare his/her soul in order to survive. And it doesn’t end there… They have to make life-altering decisions about the mission and their relationship, and what is unique to this series and this story particularly,...

Wizards and Shifters, oh my!

Wizards and Shifters, oh my! I’m busy reading Lion’s Heat by Lora Leigh… I hope to finish tonight and have review to you by Friday. Until then, enjoy a quickie review of a great paranormal/shifter series…Quickie Review: Maxey Wizard Series by Teresa D’Amario Book 1: The Moon: Tigress by the Tail In a world where most humans aren’t aware of the paranormal that surrounds them, shifters will do anything to protect their identities.  When a wizard, Lance, meets shifter, Cassie, those rules go out the window.  From the very first meeting, both individuals feel that they are meant to be together. Book 1 is a basic love story, with a few twists and turns.  The overall story is that of the guy and the girl meeting and mating.  The romance is passionate and the story is quick.  But it’s the background story about which I want to know more… Who are the GSA? Was there a shifter in Lance’s bloodline? What will happen next? At times the dialogue was simple, but the story kept moving.  It was easy to read and I look forward to reading the continuing story. My Rating:  Book 2: Lone Wolf Him: A male wolf shifter with no memory of his past or how he came to be “this creature.” Her: The only girl in a wizarding family. Shut out of the special government agency on paranormal activity by her family, she is a cop with a talent for soothing wild beasts. Together: They take on the evil government agency and a wicked pack of hyenas. Oh, and the sparks do fly!!! What an excellent follow up book in Ms. D’Amario’s Maxey Wizard series! Right from the start, the story grabbed me.  I couldn’t wait to find out where the plot would twist and turn. The chemistry between the Damon and Krystal is fabulous. The story is involving and fun to read.  And there are so many little questions left open for the next story… A great overall story arc is in the making.  I highly recommend this story to any fan of the alpha shifter male, or any fan of excellent paranormal romance.  The book will hook you in and leave you wanting more! My...

Unleashing the Storm

Unleashing the Storm Unleashing the Storm Author: Sydney Croft (Larissa Ione & Stephanie Tyler) Release Date: Available Now Publisher: Bantam Dell ACRO Book #2 ISBN: #0-385-34081-8 From the author’s website:       Feel the heat. Hear the roar.       The fever has begun.       There’s a storm rising. Electricity crackles in the air. For Kira Donovan, it’s that time of year again: when the need floods her flesh, when almost any man—the bigger and the stronger the better—will do. For Kira, an animal psychic, the heat is a matter of life and death, and this year it has come at just the right time. Tom Knight, a natural born predator, has arrived at her isolated Idaho farm—for reasons all his own…       At first Kira isn’t interested in Knight’s motives. She only needs him—his body, his hands, his scent. But soon, through a daze of desire and distrust, Kira discovers Knight’s world—the world of a covert operative, one man among dozens of secret agents waging an astonishing global war. Knight’s mission is to bring Kira–kicking and screaming if necessary–into the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives and harness her extraordinary gift. He never expected the powerful emotions she would ignite in him, or the fierce desire to keep her safe from harm. For as darkness gathers around them, Kira is feeling the heat once again, leading them both on a wild ride of delicious thrills…and terror beyond imagining. What I’m talking about:       I wasn’t sure what to expect in the second ACRO book-the first was so exciting, and I always worry about sophomore books. Thankfully, Unleashing the Storm did not disappoint!       We briefly met Tommy “Ender” Knight in the first ACRO book, Riding the Storm. He was set up as the grumpy loaner, ex-military dude. And he remains that way into and throughout this book. He is attracted to Kira, may have some feelings for her as he gets to know her, but his personality does not take a 180-turn when he meets her. I like this.       Kira has some sort of tie to animals and occasionally exhibits similar behavioral patterns, including an annual “mating heat.” I’m not talking about the need for sex, I’m talking about the need for “seed.” We learn that she always has more than one male to service her and meet the demands of her high-frequency mating needs.  Unfortunately for her, her...
