Captive Spirit – Review

Captive Spirit – Review Captive Spirit Author: Liz Fichera  Release Date: June 28, 2010 Publisher: Carina Press  ISBN: #9781426890390 Genre: Historical Romance Note: I won this book from the author in an online giveaway. The author asked if I would review the book. Be sure to check the bottom of this post for CONTEST information. From the author’s website: Sonoran Desert. Dawn of the sixteenth century.  Aiyana isn’t like the other girls of the White Ant Clan. Instead of keeping house, she longs to compete on the Ball Court with her best friend Honovi and the other boys. Instead of marriage, she daydreams of traveling beyond the mountains that surround her small village. Only Honovi knows and shares her forbidden wish, though Aiyana doesn’t realize her friend has a secret wish of his own… When Aiyana’s father arranges her marriage to a man she hardly knows, she takes the advice of a tribal elder: Run! In fleeing, she falls into the hands of Spanish raiders and finds herself being taken over the mountains against her will. Now Aiyana’s on a quest to return to the very place she once dreamed of escaping. And she’ll do whatever it takes to survive and find her way back to the people she loves. What I’m talking about: I’m going to start by telling you that this is NOT the typical book that I read and review. First – It’s historical… taking place in the early 1500’s and focusing on Native American life. Second – there is paranormal activity in this story. There are no vampires, faeries, shifters nor any paranormal studs involved, and I LIKED IT!  It is a wonderful love story and *SHOCK* I didn’t miss the smut! I have officially expanded my horizons! The story is told in first person narrative from the point of view of 16-year old Aiyana. She feels trapped by her daily life and dreams of going beyond the safe territory of her clan’s land. But when she is kidnapped by Spanish raiders, she realizes that her heart belongs back at home and with her best friend, Honovi.  She is driven to do what it takes to make it back. This story outlines the intricacies of daily life and ceremonies for a Native American clan in a way that brought to life for me this early civilization. The details are beautiful and I felt like I was right along side of Aiyana as she struggled to keep up with her...

Decadent Deceptions – Review

Decadent Deceptions – Review Decadent Deceptions Author: Keta Diablo Release Date: October 2008 Publisher: Noble Romance Publishing ISBN: #978-1-60592-013-9 Genre: Historical Erotic Romance Note: This book was given to me by the author for the purpose of review. From the author’s website: Daring and desperate to win Morgan’s love, Olivia Breedlove embarks on a reckless folly. But everything backfires when Morgan remains one step ahead of her and the game ventures down a path of duplicity and murder. A decade ago, Morgan was a heartbeat away from taking Olivia’s virginity. Her father, Thaddeus, intervened and threatened to meet him over pistols if he so much as looked at his daughter again. But now, Thaddeus is dead and Morgan has no intention of ignoring the ravenous hunger he’s harbored for the blasted woman for ten years.  One way or the other, he will quench this burning desire and make her his forever. What I’m talking about: The book starts out with the recent death of dear Olivia and Cain’s father. He was a wealthy man who split his estate between his son (and fiancée) and daughter – with one catch: she must wed a respectable man of the gentry within 6 months. Headstrong Olivia does NOT like this plan, especially when the love of her life (and brother’s best friend) does not meet her father’s criteria.  Alas, Olivia is determined to win over Morgan, regardless of her father’s last wishes, if only Morgan would look at Olivia as more than a little sister.  In order to win over Morgan, Olivia begins a quest to make him jealous by venturing to the local brothel to “observe and learn.”  Meanwhile, Morgan has loved Olivia for ten years and is nearly insane with desire. He wants Olivia to love him and determines to “help” her in her endeavors.  Morgan and Olivia enter into game of cat and mouse to try and win over the other. Little do they realize that they both want the same thing: each other. Misconceptions raise the stakes at each turn of events. (It reminded me of that Friends episode when Phoebe and Rachel tried to get Chandler and Monica to admit that they were fooling around, yet Chandler and Monica wanted the ladies to admit they knew…) Top off these games with the fact that some one is killing off the brothel’s female employees, and it looks like the same person may be stalking Olivia. I have to tell you that I...

From the author’s website: EXTREME HEAT. EXTREME HUNGER. A JUNGLE EDEN ABLAZE WITH TEMPTATION..      Shockwaves shoot through the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives (ACRO) when horrific video surfaces from the Brazilian rain forest. A team of Navy SEALs has been nearly wiped out by something sinister and superhuman. Now ACRO agents Sela Kahne and Marlena West head to the world’s most unforgiving jungle in pursuit of a mythical monstrosity with a taste for human blood. And the only path that will take them to the creature runs through two men, each hiding his own dark secret.      Sela is an expert on cryptozoology with a sideline skill that could prove invaluable: when she makes love to a man, she engulfs his innermost thoughts. Teamed with Marlena, Sela makes contact with the lone SEAL survivor, Chance McCormack. Meanwhile Logan Mills, the man who rescued Chance, leads his private company on a hunt that has nothing to do with saving lives. Soon, Sela will put her supernatural charms to work on Logan, determined to extract information about the creature they are seeking. But in this sweat-drenched realm of danger and deception, Logan is more than just a passive target. He has the power to lead a highly-trained seducer into a jungle without any rules, without any limits—and no end to the heat. What I’m talking about:      This book sizzles from the first page until the end! ACRO veteran agent, Sela, and first time field operative, Marlena, head to the Brazilian rain forest to find out more about the mysterious creature that was filmed attacking a SEAL team, and more importantly stop the para-military group, GWC, that is camped near the attack site, from selling weapons to ITOR (the bad guys). Even though Marlena is sent to seduce GWC head, Logan, she is unexplainably drawn to the loan SEAL survivor, Chance. Meanwhile, as Sela tries to push Logan towards Marlena, she can’t help but fall for his wicked charm and sex appeal.      The story that takes place down in the rain forest is SMOKIN’ HOT and exciting. Each individual struggles with a strong (never felt before) attraction, keeping a personal...

Demon Blood – Review

Demon Blood – Review Demon Blood Author:Meljean Brook  Release Date: July 6, 2010 Publisher: Berkley Sensation Guardian Series Book # 6 (story 10 if include the novellas) ISBN: #0425235475 Genre: Paranormal Romance From the author’s website:       Long before she was transformed into a Guardian and trained to fight demons, Rosalia knew darkness all too well. Raised by a demon, Rosalia learned to guard her heart—and her soul—until she found a man worthy of her love. Once, she thought that man would be the powerful vampire, Deacon…until he betrayed the Guardians.       After losing everything to the lies of a demon, Deacon lives only for revenge—and is taken aback when Rosalia offers to help. A vampire who has nothing—who is nothing—isn’t worthy of her attention. But Rosalia wants to do more than just look, and the explosive need between them can’t be held in check. And when Deacon’s vengeful quest creates a dangerous alliance of their enemies, she will be his only hope… What I’m talking about:       I’m going to state up front that I LOVE the Guardian series. The mythology is interesting and unique, the story lines are exciting, the romance is sizzling, and Meljean does such an amazing job with character development that I am sad to say good-bye when I finish reading each story.  Demon Blood is no exception to this.       Picking up where Demon Forged ended, we find Guardian Rosalia recovered from her “abduction” and back in her own territory fighting demons. She runs into vampire (and traitor) Deacon once night, 6 months after she saved his life.  She begins to formulate a detailed plan that will get rid of several mutual enemies and begins to convince Deacon he needs to join her.       Immediately I was drawn to this couple. They each have a longing and ache to be with one another, but their individual and mutual pasts block the way. Their story is heartbreaking and I was routing for them to get together right away. And when I finally thought it was going to happen, my heart was ripped out. [MILD SPOILER] In an intense scene that emotionally crushes both characters, Deacon assumes that Rosalia will allow him to sexually use her just to get him to help her with her plans. Oh, the drama! I was in tears for both characters.       But as much as I was cheering for Rosie and...

Review of Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love

Review of Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love Author: Franze & Andaerle Release Date: August 2009 Publisher: Bruno Gmunder Verlag Gmbh ISBN: #3867870365 Genre: Graphic Novel, M/M erotica I won this book from the wonderful Marq at Love 2 Read For Fun  From Goodreads: The rough and merciless pirate Black Wade and his band are the scare of the seven seas. And just like his greed for gold is insatiable, his sexual craving knows no boundaries as well: When they board a British ship, Wade takes Lieutenant Jack Wilkins as a prisoner to satisfy his lust. At first Wilkins struggles with all his might, but soon he has to acknowledge that he actually has pleasure in the eager sexual encounters with the handsome pirate. In the meantime his fiancée Annabeth is waiting wistfully for the return of Jack, not knowing if he’s still alive. And on the pirate ship emotions are running high as well: Buccaneer Marak keeps a jealous watch over the prisoner Jack. He would love to polish Wade’s gun barrel himself. Due to the rising nervousness Wade realizes that he cannot allow himself the tender feelings he begins to have for Jack. To prove how merciless he is, he maroons Jack on a raft and relinquishes him to the forces of the wide ocean. But that’s nowhere near the end of the story… What I’m talking about: Okay, so let’s get this out of the way right up front… I liken reading Black Wade to guys who say “I read Playboy for the articles.” While those articles may be thought-provoking and interesting, we all know it wasn’t the driving reason for buying the magazine. The key to reading a graphic novel is that you need to read both the written words as well as the detailed pictures that go with each panel/scene. Because there are so few words, reading them alone will not give you the entire story. Black Wade is no exception to this rule. There are several key plot points and underlying facts that can only be discovered from the artwork. For example, in the very beginning of the story Lieutenant Jack Wilkins lays down for a rest on his voyage home and fantasizes about his fiancee. But what we see is that fantasy turn from Annabeth into a rather large phallic, and only then does Jack find his release. It’s a key part of the developing story, told to the reader via images. And...

Review of The Sin Eater’s Prince

Review of The Sin Eater’s Prince The Sin Eater’s Prince Author: Keta Diablo Release Date: January 2010 Publisher: Ravenous Romance ISBN: #978-1-60777-319-1 Genre: Paranormal Romance, M/M Romance From the author’s website: Owen Rhys, the sin eater of his village in Wales, has been shunned by the local villagers his entire life—except by Andras Maddock, the local physician. In love with the one man he thinks will never return that love, Owen is shocked when Andras saves him from death at the hands of a vampire and admits he cares deeply for Owen. Dagan, son of Traherne, the vampire Andras killed to save Owen, will stop at nothing to avenge his father’s death and obtain the Prince of Wales’s mystic sword from Andras. The divine claymore holds the power to grant immunity from the sun’s harsh rays—the one exemption the dark Lords of the Underworld has sought for centuries. Star-crossed love, sorcery, and bloodlust collide on a vengeful path where only one side can remain. What I’m talking about: Owen is one of those perfect males… a quiet, humble man… one that is gorgeous, but doesn’t know it, one that gives of himself day after day and expects nothing in return. From the beginning I fell for Owen. I was so worried he would get his heart stomped upon or end up being used and tossed away.  But someone else noticed how amazing Owen is… Andras, small town physician and vampire-in-hiding. The two admire each other from afar, never expecting their lust and desire to be returned. Yet fate brings them together and leads them on a wonderful journey. Their love story is uncomplicated and full of life. They don’t play games with one another and act on their desires almost immediately in the book (although it has been about 5 years of backstory for the two of them.) Their union does not disappoint. Their love making is HOT and full of beautiful emotions that pulled on my heart strings. There is detailed m/m erotic sex, so if you are at all leery of m/m romance, you may want to steer clear. However, I found the romance so beautiful, it didn’t matter to me what their sexual preferences were. But, this story does not end with the union of Owen and Andras. Enter Dagan, long tooth (vampire) and bad guy extraordinaire. His father was slain by Andras and now Dagan wants revenge – as well as the magical sword which Andras holds. In order to defeat...

Bound By Rebellion – Review

Bound By Rebellion – Review Bound by Rebellion Author: Christa Paige   Release Date: February 2010 Publisher: Liquid Silver ebooks   Blood-Vine Series Book #2  ISBN: #978-1-59578-670-8 Genre: Paranormal Romance/Novella lengthNote: An e-copy of this book was given to me by the author for review purposes. From the author’s website: Katiya and Lucas are blood-bound mates. Nearly a decade ago, their idyllic relationship quickly devolved into one of animosity. Furious with Luke’s meddling in her privacy, she left him. Except, they have a pesky issue that continues to bind them together. They must carry on, sharing their blood, or face the deadly consequences, literally. Ten years have past since Kat moved out. Now, their estrangement firmly in place, she is desperate to move on with her life. So desperate in fact, that she will even rebel against the long-held convictions of her people. Secretly, over the past several months, she has formed an infatuation with a co-worker and, tonight, she plans to take it to the next level. Luke is unhappy with their tenuous situation. He is prepared to do anything to win her back. He wants her in his arms where he can show her the depths of his passion. If seduction is the key to their reconciliation, he is more than ready to take her to new levels of pleasure. He needs her home, with him, to keep her safe and secure. Once Kat takes a drastic step to alter her life, she comes face-to-face with a sinister threat. Lucas must find her in time and, when he does, he promises, on his life, that nothing will keep them apart ever again. What I’m talking about: When we first meet Kat and Luke, we discover that they are separated and Kat is ready to move on. In the beginning, we find out that Kat must maintain a “relationship” with her estranged mate so that he can survive (needs her blood) and she can stay young.  She convinces herself (and me) that it is an awful arrangement. But as I read on, I realized that Kat was also a spoiled brat.  In comes Daniel: handsome co-worker and Kat’s prospective romance. She hasn’t been out with anyone since Luke and is finally ready to take that chance. Immediately we know that something isn’t quite right with Daniel, and I enjoyed trying to figure out what it was (and how Luke would figure it out). The first thing I noticed about Ms. Paige’s work was the exquisite...

Magic Bleeds – Book Review

Magic Bleeds – Book Review Magic Bleeds Author: Ilona Andrews Release Date: May 25, 2010 Publisher: ACE Fantasy Kate Daniels Series Book # 4 ISBN: #0441018521 Genre: Urban Fantasy From the author’s website:      Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it rose.      Kate Daniels works for the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle—especially if they involve Atlanta’s shapeshifting community.      When she’s called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar midway between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers there’s a new player in town. One who’s been around for thousands of years—and rode to war at the side of Kate’s father.      This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Lord of the Beasts, to handle. Because this time, Kate will be taking on family… What I’m talking about:      This is one of those books that as soon as you’re finished reading you want to go back and re-read it all over again — you are sad that the experience is over and just want to make it last and last — ESPECIALLY for those that have followed the Kate Daniels series from the first book. Once again, the husband and wife team that is Ilona Andrews does a remarkable job weaving a tale of magic, love, action and mystery.      This book picks up shortly after Book 3: Magic Strikes and the novella (Book 3.5), “Magic Mourns,” end. We quickly find out how bet/date between Beast Lord Curran and Kate goes. But this story is much more than the budding romance and love between these two powerful people. There is a new baddy in town. One that can spread disease with a touch and infect even the Shifters. He also appears to be able to control a group of undead mages. Not a fun day for Kate or Atlanta.      I don’t want to give ANYTHING away, so I’ll make my comment generic and brief. But know this: Magic Bleeds is the best Kate book yet! Kate...

Dark Succession – Review

Dark Succession – Review Dark Succession Author: Teresa D’Amario Release Date: April 20, 2010 ebook format Publisher: Freya’s BowerTrue Mate Series Book #2 ISBN: 978-1-936222-20-9 Genre: Paranormal Romance / Shifter From the author’s website: Nora Hunt is the daughter of former pack leader Sean Hunt and niece to Kieran Hunt. Emotionally and physically scarred after being held captive for weeks, she’s finally ready to move on with her life. But when she meets Ryland, she discovers not only a world of darkness and pain, but discovers Ryland may not be any better than those who held her captive all those weeks. When Ryland Keegan steps in as Alpha of his dead brother’s pack, he inherits a pack of savage rogue wolven, as well as a legacy of violence, lies and five women held captive within the pack’s confines. But when Ryland’s pack members start dying one at a time, he must decide if Nora is the catalyst or the killer. Can he trust his True Mate? Or will he be relegated to a life of leading the dregs of Wolven society? What I’m talking about: Dark Succession is an excellent mixture of action and romance, which alone made for a wonderful read. However, I was glued to the pages of this book because of the excellent story telling and an gripping “whodunit” plot line. Ryland’s pack members are being killed off and he has no idea who is doing it or why it is happening. In addition, someone keeps breaking into Ryland’s den, and he finds a mysterious coded diary that his dead brother left behind. Ryland doesn’t know who can help him, and after he has been lied to and hurt by his own family so often, he cannot even trust that his True Mate, Nora, is innocent. We are introduced to a wonderful cast of characters and I found myself constantly looking for a hint or clue that would help me solve the mysteries.  I could not put this book down. On top the great whodunit story, we have Nora: our heroine. Nora is a shewolf and daughter of her pack’s former leader. She is strong, but was destroyed by her own capture and torture and is no longer the confident shewolf she once was. (We read about her captivity in the first book, She Wolf.) What I love about Nora is that we watch her grow from the weak shell of her former self to the strong alpha-bitch she was...

WE LOVE GENA WEEK – Day #5: Review of The Darkest Passion

WE LOVE GENA WEEK – Day #5: Review of The Darkest Passion In celebration of Tuesday’s release, both Bells and I have our ARC-reviews of The Darkest Passion. You can read mine below and visit Hanging With Bells for her review. The Darkest Passion Author: Gena Showalter  Release Date: May 25, 2010 Publisher: Harlequin Publishing Lords of the Underworld Series Book #6 ISBN: #0373774559 NOTE: this is an ARC review that I obtained from NetGalley. I did not pay for the book, and I did not receive anything for this review. From the author’s website:      For weeks, the immortal warrior Aeron has sensed an invisible female presence.  An angel–a demon-assassin–has been sent to kill him.  Or has she?  Olivia claims she fell from the heavens, giving up immortality because she couldn’t bear to harm him. But trusting – and falling for – Olivia will endanger them all. So how has this ‘mortal’ with the huge blue eyes already unleashed Aeron’s darkest passion?     Now, with an enemy hot on his trail and his faithful demon companion determined to remove Olivia from his life, Aeron is trapped between duty and consuming desire. Worse still, a new executioner has been sent to do the job Olivia wouldn’t… What I’m talking about:      Ah: Aeron… How I have waiting for you since the beginning!  I have been in love with anticipating Aeron’s book since the first Lords of the Underworld story. And my wait was rewarded with this wonderful story.      My tattooed, black-winged hunk, Aeron, has been tormented by his demon, Wrath, for centuries. Wrath gives Aeron the ability to “see” an individual’s history – all of his/her sins, and creates a need in Aeron to destroy the individual for these sins. Cronus, the god king and ruler over the Lords, placed a curse upon Aeron in the first Lords book, which put him through terrible bloodlust, and he almost went insane. Once the curse was lifted, Aeron was able to get himself back together and maintain some sanity with the calming influence of his “daughter” demon, Legion.  That is until he meets darling Olivia, a true angel. She soothes Aeron and causes Wrath to purr. She gave up her heavenly existence and climbed out of hell to be with Aeron. She is naive, but brave – willing to give up everything just for a little fun and *wink, wink*.      Ms. Showalter does a fantastic job weaving a tale of star-crossed love. Their love story is a...
