My Friday Reads: September 13, 2013

My Friday Reads: September 13, 2013 This week has been very busy for me. Here at my house, things are back in full swing. Both kids are back in school and sports. The Boy also had his big brown belt test in karate a week ago (he’d been training all summer). I went back to work as well. What does all this mean? It means way less time to read than I would like. It also means that I haven’t finished the book I started earlier this week; therefore, I do not have my review for today. So instead… I’m going to share what I’m reading this Friday and what’s up next for me… My...

Saturday Conversations: Using the Library

Saturday Conversations: Using the Library Going to the Library We are big fans of the library in my house. The kids and I visit our local library on average, every other week. There is a wonderful children’s room, full of hundreds of picture books and just as many middle-grade readers. They have a section of chunky board books, a reference section, DVDs and puppets. There is a quiet little reading nook and a train table. It’s a wonderful environment for toddlers up through teens. In fact, I joke that I will continue to use the children’s room long after my kids have grown because the atmosphere and staff are so wonderful. We also check-out...

Saturday Conversions: Saying Farewell to a Series

Saturday Conversions: Saying Farewell to a Series Saying Goodbye In the past two weeks I’ve had to say farewell to two of my favorite series. Meljean Brook capped of her marvelous Guardian series with the eighth title, Guardian Demon, and Philippa Ballantine ended her epic fantasy Book of the Order series with the fourth book, Harbinger. While I was in the midst of reading these books back-to-back, I came across THIS POST by Suzanne Johnson, which asked how a series should end. What an appropriate question as I was reading two series finales. That got me thinking… What makes a good end to a series? And furthermore, how do you say goodbye to a series? Most importantly… if and when...

Saturday Conversations 04/13/2013

Saturday Conversations 04/13/2013 Scheduling my TBR list… Earlier this week, I started shifting through review requests for July and August. Yes – that’s how far out I have to plan my schedule! When I go through review requests I do a few things. First, if it’s not in an established series any of the reviewers or I read, I try to determine who may enjoy the book most. Each reviewer has their own personal preferences. If it is in a series someone already reads, well they automatically get the new release to review.  Next I look at the release date and my master schedule to find the best placement for the book...

Saturday Conversations 03/30/2013

Saturday Conversations 03/30/2013 Waiting on a book… Yes… that was me this week (and the past year!)… Waiting for the release of the eleventh Black Dagger Brotherhood book… Lover At Last by JR Ward. I was so excited for this book that I actually paid the ridiculous price for the Kindle version – just so I could have it download on to my Paperwhite at midnight. I’ve been excited about books before, but never so much as Lover At Last. It’s not my favorite series, it’s not the best story out there, but something about JR Ward keeps me coming back for more. Also, a driving factor for getting to the book...

Saturday Conversations 02/09/2013

Saturday Conversations 02/09/2013 When a book goes bad… It came to our attention that there are some issues that can make or break a book.  One such issue for us, Gikany and Una, is rape – especially the rape of the main character. Rarely have we read a book that handles the issue of rape “well.” When thinking of this issue, an appropriate example for us is the Mercy Thompson series. This is the first series that Una has read where the main character is raped, and the description and handling of the action and fallout was appropriately done.  It did enhance the book.  It provided challenges later on – the rape...

Saturday Conversations 12/22/2012

Saturday Conversations 12/22/2012 Holiday Themed Books Wow! I cannot believe that it is almost the end of 2012! Since you are reading this post, we all know that the world did not end on Friday *phew*! So I guess I’d better finish my Christmas shopping now that I know there will be a Christmas this year! With the holidays upon us, I’ve noticed a large selection of holiday-themed books in both print and electronic copy. I’ve read a few over the years, both multi-author anthologies and single-author books, but all of them novella-length stories. I don’t read a lot of them, but I have enjoyed a handful. My two favorites are The...
