Listen Up! #Audiobook Review: Familiar Motives by Delia James

Listen Up! #Audiobook Review: Familiar Motives by Delia James Welcome to my weekly feature that focuses on audiobooks. It’s time to… Audiobook Reviews: Witch’s Cat Mysteries Familiar Motives Author: Delia James Narrator: Elise Arsenault Audio Listening Speed: 1.5x Series: Witch’s Cat Mystery #3 Genre: Urban Fantasy / Cozy Mystery Source: Tantor Audio I continue to enjoy the Witch’s Cat Mystery series.  The combination of Ms. James’s words and Ms. Arsenault’s voice create a delightful Mystery audiobook a la Hallmark. This latest whodunit was gripping and fun. Though I’m starting to fear that Anna is a long lost relative of Mrs. Fletcher and no one should want to be near her (okay, this horribly dates me but I loved Murder She Wrote as...

Review: Sorrow’s Son by Rene Sears

Review: Sorrow’s Son by Rene Sears Sorrow’s Son Author: Rene Sears Reviewer: Una Rating: A- What I’m Talking About: Sorrow’s Son picks up shortly after where Strangehold ended. Though it wasn’t what I was expecting, I did enjoy this next installment of the continuing collision of two different dimensions. When I initially picked up this series, I thought (mistakenly) that Morgan would be the main character POV through the series.  This isn’t the case.  Though I really enjoy Morgan, this older witch and the romantic tension between her and Rowan, I was surprised by how fascinated I was with Javier.  It was fairly easy to figure out who Javier is, but it was not easy...

Review: Snowspelled by Stephanie Burgis

Review: Snowspelled by Stephanie Burgis Snowspelled Author: Stephanie Burgis Reviewer: Una Rating: A  What I’m Talking About: Snowspelled is a delightful and intriguing short introduction to a fascinating world.  The Harwood Spellbook series has hooked me, and I eagerly await the next story. Though only a novella, I was thoroughly captivated by Cassandra and the world she lives in.  Angland is an interesting twist on a historical England.  The rigid roles of men and women – the social rules – all beautifully contrasted with a stubborn and oddly magical woman, Cassandra.  In this world, men have and wield the magic while women are the political juggernauts.  However, it’s not only the politics of people...

Review: So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks

Review: So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks So I Married a Sorcerer Author: Kerrelyn Sparks Reviewer: Una Rating: A-  What I’m Talking About: The Embraced series is so far a truly fascinating mythology.  So I Married a Sorcerer is an exciting and thrilling sequel to How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days. First, I really enjoy this world.  Those born on a night when the two moons are touching (so called “embraced”) are born with special abilities.  Unless born on this night, you will be a normal human person.  The main continent is predominately ruled by men and the culture worships the sun god.  They kill those that are embraced.  On a small island, cloisters...

Review: Strangehold by Rene Sears

Review: Strangehold by Rene Sears Strangehold Author: Rene Sears Reviewer: Una Rating: A- What I’m Talking About: Strangehold is a fascinating series debut.  I enjoyed this introduction to a world of witches and Faerie and look forward to more. Let me say first that this novella could have been a full novel.  There is such a rich world with fascinating characters and politics, some elements could have been stretched out a bit in the storytelling.  That being said, the story wasn’t lacking despite its shorter length.  In fact, I’d say the book had a succinct feeling – the story flowed and conveyed the twists and turns without a lot of embellishment.  I enjoyed Ms....

Listen Up! #Audiobook Review: By Familiar Means by Delia James

Listen Up! #Audiobook Review: By Familiar Means by Delia James Welcome to my weekly feature that focuses on audiobooks. It’s time to… Audiobook Reviews: Witch’s Cat Mysteries By Familiar Means Author: Delia James Narrator: Elise Arsenault Audio Listening Speed: 1x Series: Witch’s Cat Mystery #2 Genre: Urban Fantasy / Cozy Mystery Source: Tantor Audio By Familiar Means is another delightful read in the Witch’s Mystery Cat series.  I enjoyed the continuing journey of Anna as she learns more about her heritage, her abilities and the community of Portsmouth. The novel begins a few weeks after the conclusion of the previous novel, A Familiar Tail.  Anna is settling into the house she is renting along with the coven of Portsmouth.  She is excited that...

Listen Up! #Audiobook Review: A Familiar Tail by Delia James

Listen Up! #Audiobook Review: A Familiar Tail by Delia James Welcome to my weekly feature that focuses on audiobooks. It’s time to… Audiobook Reviews: Witch’s Cat Mysteries A Familiar Tail Author: Delia James Narrator: Elise Arsenault Audio Listening Speed: Series: Witch’s Cat Mystery #1 Genre: Urban Fantasy / Cozy Mystery Source: Tantor Audio I am delighted that I picked up this audiobook, A Familiar Tail.  On a whim, I thought I would enjoy a story that blends mystery with magic.  Overall I really enjoyed both the story and the narration and can’t wait to listen to the next Witch’s Cat Mystery. Though the story was a tad sluggish in starting because Anna was slow in getting into the magical pool, I enjoyed learning...

Review: Say Yes to the Scot Anthology

Review: Say Yes to the Scot Anthology Say Yes to the Scot: A Highland Wedding Box Set Author: Lecia Cornwall, Anna Harrington, May McGoldrick, Sabrina York Reviewer: Una Rating: A What I’m Talking About: I picked up this anthology so I could read the contribution by Lecia Cornwall.  I love her Highland Fairy Tale series.  However, the other three novellas were just as enchanting and enjoyable. How a Lass Wed a Highlander is a novella in the Highland Fairy Tale series.  I thoroughly enjoyed this reimaging of The Princess and the Pea.  I liked the interplay between Cait and the other brides.  Cait’s innate kindness was a source of inner strength for her.  Alex’s stubborn and...

Review: Owl and the Electric Samurai by Kristi Charish

Review: Owl and the Electric Samurai by Kristi Charish Owl and the Electric Samurai Author: Kristi Charish Reviewer: Una Rating: A- What I’m Talking About: I have missed the adventures of Owl.  I don’t know why it feels as if it has been years since I’ve read Owl and the City of Angels but I was excited to finally know what happens next.  Owl and the Electric Samurai did not disappoint! When we last saw Owl, she had lost custody of her beloved Mau cat, Captain, to Lady Siyu, while also receiving a mysterious offer from the IAA. I had no idea what to expect when I started on this novel, but watching Owl trying to actually track down Shangri-La...

Review: The Chosen by J.R. Ward

Review: The Chosen by J.R. Ward The Chosen Author: J.R. Ward Reviewer: Una Rating: B What I’m Talking About: The Chosen is a novel that I have both wanted and dreaded.  This fifteenth book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series was to be a make or break book for me.  Suffice to say, the WARDen found and worked that special magic.  Though there are some highs and lows, overall I liked it – my crack is back! ****Needless to say, this is the 15th book in the series…if you haven’t read the series, there will be spoilers.  If you haven’t read through The Beast, there will be spoilers.  There are a few elements to the...
