Twimom: Eve, welcome and thank you for stopping by.
Eve: Hi Jen. Thanks very much for having me.
Twimom: I have enjoyed reading your Otherkin Trilogy. It is loosely based on Egyptian mythology. Did your writing require a lot of research into Egyptian mythology? What about the other mythologies you mention in the books?
Eve: I did a ton of research for these books. I purchased numerous texts. My local museum actually had a rare and wonderful exhibit of the Book of the Dead and I had the opportunity to pore over it first hand and marvel at the beauty and wonder. But the mythology in these stories is not limited to Egyptian. There are elements of others cultures and civilizations and I researched those as well.
In addition, I was intrigued by the prospect of choosing the right names for these characters and I did research into meanings and pronunciations (and I have a brief guide on the FAQ page of my website).
Twimom: I love how you mixed in all different mythologies. What were your inspirations for the Otherkin Trilogy?
Eve: There wasn’t a single inspiration, but rather flashes of insight and interest. I wondered how the mythologies and Underworld tales of all cultures and religions could fit into a single Underworld. I wondered about turning things upside down: What if the villains were the heroes? I wondered what would happen if the only person you could trust was your enemy. And I started writing SINS OF THE HEART (book 1). Then, as I followed threads of mythological reference and became immersed in stories and lore, the Japanese mythology I was reading about inspired many elements in SINS OF THE SOUL (book 2). By that point, the world was quite vast, and I drew on that vastness as I wrote SINS OF THE FLESH (book 3).
The heroes that arose are interesting characters. They have issues, to say the least. And each one of them needs a woman who can meet and match them, someone who can stand toe-to-toe with them. I was inspired to write strong heroines who could match each of these larger-than-life heroes.
Twimom: I love a strong hero that needs the right woman! The Otherkin Trilogy is paranormal in nature. Do you enjoy writing any other genres?
Eve: Mixing things up is always interesting. In addition to paranormal, I’ve written historical suspense (also under the name Eve Silver) and post-apocalyptic adventure (under the name Eve Kenin). They were all great fun.
Twimom: Does the story truly end with the third book, Sins of the Flesh, or will we see more from the Krayl brothers?
Eve: I love the Krayl brothers and it’s hard to think of letting them go. That’s why they each make significant appearances in each others’ books. The story arc—the question of who killed Lokan Krayl—is complete at the end of the third book, SINS OF THE FLESH.
But the world of the soul reapers is vast. There are other stories to be told, and new questions to answer. The fourth book set in this universe, BODY OF SIN, will be out in June 2011, and I’m contracted for another book after that, as well.
Twimom: Oh, I am so glad to hear that! I look forward to seeing more next year. Are you working on anything else at this time?
Eve: I always have a few things in the works. In addition to my soul reaper books, I have a YA idea that I’m fleshing out and a…well, I’m keeping the lid on that idea for now. I’m not quite ready to share 😉
Twimom: Okay… a secret is good for now – but I look forward to hearing more. Besides writing, what else keeps you busy? What are your hobbies and interests?
Eve: My favorite game is Boggle, followed at a close second by Scrabble. I love to dance. I love scrapbooking, cardmaking and stamping. And my hubby, two sons and two dogs definitely keep me busy. Plus we’re doing a bit of remodeling right now, and that takes a ton of time and energy. And of course, reading. I adore reading.
Twimom: Wow! I imagine that it might be hard to find time to write with that schedule! What is the best book you’ve read in 2010? What upcoming 2010 book release are you most looking forward to reading?
Eve: It’s impossible for me to name a single best book. I’ve read many stories that I’ve enjoyed immensely, including romance and/or urban fantasy work by Teresa Medeiros, Christina Dodd, Marjorie M. Liu, Stacia Kane, Michelle Rowen, Lara Adrian, Caroline Linden, Ann Aguirre, Ann Christopher, Kelley Armstrong, Victoria Dahl, and Tiffany Clare. I’ve also enjoyed the Hack/Slash Omnibus from Image Comics, Christian Moerk’s Darling Jim, The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters.
As to what I’m looking forward to, usually I’m not a make-a-list sort of book shopper. I’m more of a wander the aisles and pick up books sort of reader.
Twimom: What are your favorite genres for reading?
Eve: I read a little of everything. Of course, I love romance. But I also love women’s fiction, suspense, general fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, urban fantasy, the classics, YA, true crime. A great book is a great book.
Twimom: Eve, once again thank you so much for taking the time to tell my readers a little bit about yourself and your writing. It was wonderful chatting with you.
Eve: Thank you so much for having me, and a huge thank you to all who have popped by to read this interview. If you’d like to check out my work, I have excerpts of all my books on my site, www.evesilver.net.
