Okay, I’ll admit it… I’m a cartoon freak. I will watch pretty much anything if it’s animated. That’s why I don’t mind watching TV with my kids, because secretly, I enjoy it.

Of course cartoons have changed dramatically since the days of my youth. When I was young (such a LONG time ago), the only time I could see cartoons was on Saturday mornings. I lived for the moments I could watch Scooby Doo, my absolute favorite. As I got older, I was able to start watching cartoons immediately after school on the local UHF channel. Some of the programing was old – like Woody Woodpecker and Tom and Jerry, and sometimes it was newer like Thundercats and He-man. It didn’t matter to me… it was all good. Of course, the Saturday morning cartoons got even better too. I was always a fan of the sic-fi based cartoons like Pirates of Dark Water and Thundarr the Barbarian.

Times are different now… I can watch animated programing pretty much 24/7 on a number of channels. And now that I have kids of my own, it’s enjoyable to see how their tastes in animation develop. Of course, I try to influence them, showing them shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender and movies like Howl’s Moving Castle, and so far, it’s working. We watch a few series as a whole family. Our favorites are Star Wars: Clone Wars, Kung-Fu Panda, Ben 10, Scooby Doo (Mystery Inc.) and Legend of Korra

What about you? Do you watch cartoons? What are some of your favorites – either past or present!

  1. Thundercats, Go!

LOVED that one!!! ‘Course I was a little older when that came out – watched it w/ my little brothers.

Always loved the Smurfs and Bugs.

What a great post idea. Thanks so much for sharing!

  2. I’m a cartoonian as well. Give me Avatar The Last Airbender any time any day. Love it. I also love watching many of the different anime shows like Vampire Knight, Vampire Knight Guilty. My daughter went through a period where the ONLY thing she wanted to do was queue up Avatar so I think I’v had a bit of an influence on her lol!!

    Nice knowing another cartoonian 🙂

  3. Studio Ghibli! I’ve returned to anime since my kids are older. When they were younger, it was all about CatDog, Rugrats, and Rocko’s Modern Life. Which, coincidentally, I loved.

  4. Terri: Did you see the Thundercats reboot on Cartoon Network last year? It was actually really good, but I’ve heard CN cancelled it.

Angela: I have watched LAB too many times to count. We own the DVDs of all three seasons. Hands down the best animated show ever!

Vampbard: I haven’t watched much anime. I went through a period in college, but haven’t really gotten back to it.

  5. We didn’t have a TV when I was growing up, but I was able to watch cartoons quite a bit thanks to weekends at the grandparents. 🙂

Loved Voltron, the Transformers, etc. When we finally got a TV when I was 14, I gorged! I had to be up early every Saturday to watch X-Men, which didn’t come out until I was quite a bit older.

Now with my nephews, I watch a lot of cartoons. My eldest nephew loves Star Wars, Spongebob, Ninjago, etc. The younger one does too. 🙂

  6. Bridget: I too loved Voltron. And Xmen – I think I was in college or grad school when Xmen came out. I can still hear the theme song in my head. My kids also love Ninjago. Luckily with Netflix, I can show them lots of the old, too!

  7. I loved Woody Woodpecker. Haven’t seen it in ages. I’m also a big fan of the original Looney Tunes. I also watch of adult cartoons, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, South Park, American Dad

  8. Melanie: I watched the Simpsons from day 1 for about the first 10+ seasons. But I haven’t at all lately. I LOVE Futurama! South Park is also pretty good. Problem is I pretty much only watch TV with the kiddos, and so the adult programs are off limits!

  9. I can hardly believe the timing. As I was going through my reader, my husband and I are watching old cartoons on his laptop and our kids are poking fun at us. So, yep, I watch them too.
