  1. Okay, I have been looking at various pictures and imagining the actors playing Neil as previous characters. Christian Bale playing Batman-as-Neil? Jason Isaacs playing Lucius-Malfoy-as-Neil? I love Anthony Head, but Giles-as-Neil gives me fits. So, really? Rupert Graves. Yes.

  2. It’s not who I would pick, but who seems to be stuck in my head whenever I read the latest chapter. My husband has been watching TNG a lot lately, so it is usually what is on our TV when I’m reading. So Neil is Patrick Stewart in my headcanon.

  3. I definitely see some combination of Simon Baker and Guy Pearce. But that’s strictly sticking to the description in the book. Now I’m going to think about Anthony Stewart Head and I will never be able to read a chapter of this book in public again.

  4. Viggo Mortensen…He’s dead sexy and actually looks older. I just cannot picture him as anyone younger, because I think the age thing is key to Neil being so dominant and really knowing his way around the bedroom.

  5. Paul McGann should play Neil Elwood and I would like to re-enact the following with pictorial proof for the court’s consideration:

I’ve been thinking about you Sophie. Really thinking about you. Don’t I look lonely over here all by myself? Get your ass over here. It will be lots of fun.

And if further proof is needed please allow me to enter into evidence this entire blog-post dedicated to seeing as much of Paul McGann as possible (NSFW)

I rest my case and request a short recess so the court may go change its panties. Sploosh.

  6. Oh man! I take back what I said. To the person who posted pictures of Paul McGann, thank you! Especially in the first pic you posted. This is how I will see Neil from now on.

  7. @Reese You’re welcome. It’s not like I would ever turn down Head (rim-shot) but Paul McGann…RAWR. There’s a sexy beast just raging in that man that makes you immediately think in prepositional phrases. As in I would like Paul McGann to f*** me: “bent over that desk” or “up against that wall” or “in the ladies room” or “before my husband/boyfriend/partner comes home” etc.

    That man. THAT. F***ING. MAN.

  8. Benedict Cumberbatch aka Sherlock Holmes . Ordering me to take off my dress with that deep voice of his makes my panties melt.

  9. Sting, although I can definitely get behind (or, y’know, under, in front of, on top of) Clive Owen as Neil.

  10. My first thought was Daniel Craig or Christian Bale, but I think Ewan McGregor could do the role justice.

  11. Man, I didn’t think of Hugh Laurie – thanks Carla.

Old fashioned I guess. I’ve got my 6’2″, blonde haired, blue eyed hubby in mind. :o)

  12. I was picturing Jude Law for awhile but I like the suggestion of Christopher Eccleston. I can definitely see that. I also love David Tennant generally but I don’t really see him as Neil.

  13. Am I the only one going with Bruce Greenwood? Don’t know why but that man is fine… And sexy, with a calm, gentle authority about him. Hm, I could definitely see him as Neil.

  14. When I think of Neil, the first person to pop into my mind is Liam Neeson. Mmmmm, he is one lovely looking (and sounding) man.

  15. Christopher Eccleston is a great suggestion, but not as the Doctor (though he is my favorite Doctor) more like Norfolk in Elizabeth, sans the whole trying to kill people thing (though he does make a fantastic bad guy), of course. I mean, the man makes silk tunics sexy and masculine for the love of god…

  16. When I first started reading, I kept picturing Mr. Sheffield from “The Nanny,” maybe because he was my pregnancy crush (haha). Recently, I’ve been picturing Neil as Simon Merrels, who played Marcus Crassus in the 3rd season of Spartacus.

BTW some other hit guys from Spartacus:
    Manu Bennett
    Dustin Clare
    Liam McIntyre

Hugh Laurie is also a good pick 🙂

  17. I’ve pictured Daniel Craig for a while but someone suggested Dougray Scott and now I can’t get him out of my head. He’s not dirty blonde but I’ve loved him so hardcore since Ever After that imagining him as Neil makes it slightly warmer in here…

  18. Mark Sheppard, circa Battlestar Galactica; all slick and slightly haggard at the same time, and with that accent, omg that accent <3 I don't know why, because he doesn't exactly look like Neil's description (at all), but I always picture him ::sigh::

  19. *content sigh* Mancandy. I’ve been busy perusing IMDB 🙂 I think I’m going to bookmark this post. LOL!

  20. I kept picturing Neal as Anthony Head, because Jenny said he was Neilfor her. Unfortunately, I don’t find Anthony even remotely hot, so I think that the best Neal-s (for me anyway), would be either Simon Baker or Jude Law.
While RDJ is one of the hottest man over 40 for me, I just can’t see him as Neal. Don’t get me wrong, I can totally see him as a hot, rich dominant, but not as Neal. And I am sorry to all fans, but while Ewan Mccgregor is certainly plesant to look at, he isn’t Neal either. He looks to sweet, and – for lack of a better term – “vanilla” to be Neal.

  21. I know he’s far too young, nearly twenty years too young, but I shamelessly cram in my Tom Hiddleston crush when I read The Boss. Not the most obscure or thought-out answer, and will probably get some eye-rolls, but it’s mostly because of this.

I mean, Jesus. He’s voicing a really nasty character for that bit but… ooh.

  22. Oh never mind, watched Ep. 9 of Roadhouse and was TOTALLY reminded of Ray Stevenson (a.k.a Titus Pullo).

    Aaahhh, Ray Stevenson.

  23. Anthony Head with a touch of Anthony Hopkins. That’d be epic.

Or Clive Owen, although he strikes me as being a bit youngish for how I envision Neil. But he does make great eyecandy.

  24. There’s just so many good choices for Neil. James Purefoy and Ray Stevenson are who I usually picture. Dougray Scott is a good choice too. Hugh Laurie is also incredibly attractive, but I don’t know if he works as Neil for me.

  25. I see Alexander Skarsgard as Neil…make him a little older looking and bam! I see him in my head while reading.

  26. This is weird (since I’m not a huge fan of him), but Jason Statham.

He’s gorgeous. Plus, the only reason I don’t like him is that he alway plays the same damn character. He’d rock this one, though!

(Honorable mentions: A slightly older Ralph Fiennes or the ever-cliched Hugh Grant)

  27. @Thea: I think, RDJ can play every role, but I wouldn’t picture him as Neil in a movie. But he’s my Neil, because he’s been in my fantasy for ages 😉
Jenny put Anthony in my head and I couldn’t get him out for a while. IMO he IS Neil and I found a picture (declared as fanart) that cemented him as Neil. ^^
Hugh Laurie… he looks delicious as Gregory House. But I see Neil cleanshaven on working days and Hugh cleanshaven makes me rather laugh, so not sexy at all. Sorry :/
And I have to withdraw Colin Firth from my own suggestions. While he would make a great Neil- at- work, I just can’t see him spanking someone.^^

  28. I just finished watching the latest episode of “Revenge”… and then I noticed that the guy who plays Aiden (Barry Sloane) would make an amazing Neil. Sure, he’s not old enough I guess, but hot damn! Plus, he’s British

  29. So I’m pretty sure no one here has heard of him, but Adam Howden. He’s a bit too young, but he does have the gorgeous English accent (and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t find English accents particularly attractive). Plus he has probably the most gorgeous eyes of any man ever.,0,214,314_.jpg

  30. I totally see Anthony Head playing Neil. This may or may not be influenced by my re-watching Buffy along with Jenny, but regardless I have always found Mr. Head quite attractive in a “the thought of him amid musty old books does tingly things to my naughty bits” way.

(Side note I only started reading The Boss tonight and I finished the first seven chapters. The only reason I haven’t finished the rest is because it’s 3:30 am and I desperately need to sleep, but never fear, as soon as I wake up I’ll be reading the next seven chapters and then champing at the bit for the rest.)

  31. Sean Bean. Definitely Sean Bean. He’s the right age, sexy beyond ALL reason, and plays both a fantastic hero and a terrifying villain. Rowr.

  32. Sean Bean is an excellent suggestion. I should have known who he was by name but I didn’t, so I googled him- and there are some pictures that perfectly capture how I picture Neil. In fact, as much as I love James Purefoy and Ray Stevenson, and I totally wouldn’t object to visualizing the sexy Jason Statham, Daniel Craig, or Alexander Skarsgard as Neil… I think Sean Bean has officially moved to the top of my list.

  33. Rupert Penry Jones (Adam from Spooks) – not only is he English but also in his forties and perfect. Google him 🙂

  34. I’m thinking that Henry Cavill or Jude Law would be great as Neil. Hugh Grant could work, or maybe even Christian Bale. Oh, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers too. I’d be happy with any of these guys…

  35. I was picturing Anthony Head the whole time since that’s who Jenny mentioned once upon a time in a blog post. However, I’ve been indulging in some image searches with all the above suggestions and I have to whole heartedly support the Dermot Mulroney, Eric Dane, Guy Pearce and Sean Bean suggestions. Also, I can’t believe no one has put Norman Reedus up for mention (or did I miss him?)

  36. JJ

Alexis Denisof or Iain Glen. A bit of a curveball but I also think Chiwetel Ejiofor would be the tits.

  37. k

I agree with the Simon Baker fans here – with the smile and the hair and the face and his general existence.

Although I did start to play around with the idea of Guy Pearce, too, after seeing him all dolled up rich-guy style in Iron Man 3… Not that Aldrich Killian and Neil have a whole lot in common, personality-wise, but then again, you couldn’t convince me that Killian isn’t harboring a love for nipple clamps. That’s all I’m saying.

  38. JAG

I generally picture the man with whom I had a very similar relationship, for fairly obvious reasons. Pretty easy to picture someone spanking you when they’ve actually done it. 🙂

As for ideal casting – Simon Baker has the right look I think, but he seems too nice for my taste. I’m not sure Clive Owen could pull off blonde but that would be totally fine with me. Or if we can time travel, Charles Shaughnessy about 15 years ago.

  39. Bruce Greenwood- the guy who plays Admiral Pike in the new Star Wars. He’s hot without being too young, and I could SO see him playing a Dom…damn…
