Targeted
Author: Katie Reus
Reviewers: Gikany and Una
Rating: A-, 4 Stars

What We’re Talking About:

Targeted is the debut novel in the new Deadly Ops series.  This is a new and exciting military romance series from Katie Reus.  Gikany and Una volunteered for this series since we enjoy Ms. Reus’s Moon Shifter series.

Overall, we enjoyed Targeted.  However, we thought it was a solid 3.75 but decided to give it the 4 star rating because it is a debut novel in what we anticipate will be a military romance series we’ll stick with.

One of the most compelling elements of the story was Sophie.  We absolutely loved her!  In the majority of the military romances we read, the female heroine bends to the will of the Alpha male.  In Targeted that is not what occurs and we love it!  Sophie not only has a backbone, but uses it.  She is smart, passionate and completely relatable.  She makes Jack work for her heart and her trust. Sophie knows there is something about Jack that isn’t quite what it seems – something that reminds her strongly of her lost love, but knows that the dead do not come back.  That being said, she doesn’t shy away nor jump in head first.  She takes her time and evaluates Jack.  We really respected that aspect of her personality.

Jack is your typical alpha male.  But the baggage he carries defines him and makes him unique.  He has never forgotten Sophie and although his identity was erased, they could not take away the bond he has with Sophie.  Even though contact to the past is forbidden, Jack has done everything he can to keep an eye on her.  His devotion to her and his ultimate goal in keeping her safe is compelling – he is even willing to walk away from her again.  Although Jack wants to just step in and control the situation, he is not able to.  Sophie won’t relinquish complete control to him.  Watching him learn who Sophie is now and the journey the two of them take under this great threat is engrossing.

If you are looking for a really good, new military romance series, pick up Targeted!  The new Deadly Ops series stands to be a passionate and action-riddled read.

4 stars: Enjoyed – strongly recommend (A-)

About the Book:

Hidden in plain sight…
Former Marine sniper and current NSA agent Jack Stone has a new face to go with his new identity. But he still has the same tortured memories—which include the woman he let get away years ago, when they were teenagers. Now his new assignment in Miami will put him so close to the woman he’s never been able to forget, he could reach out and touch her—if only she weren’t under suspicion.

When Sophie Moreno uncovers evidence linking the medical supply company she works for with arms smuggling—and worse—she doesn’t know who to turn to. After a shocking betrayal, she realizes the only person she can trust is a mysterious new person in the company—a man with hauntingly familiar eyes.

As Sophie questions her intense attraction to this man and Jack struggles not to blow his cover, the two of them must race against the clock to stop terrorists from killing scores of people—starting with them.
