What I’m Talking About:
Marked by Midnight takes place in London, where Breed Mathias Rowan now heads up a branch of the Order. He and his team of warriors happen upon a crime scene under the jurisdiction of the Joint Urban Security Taskforce Initiative Squad (JUSTIS) and discover there has been a string of recent murders, all of the victims with a unique scarab tattoo. This leads Mathias to Ozzy’s tattoo studio and artist, Nova.
Nova is a Breedmate who is all too aware of the Breeds and what it means to live under their control. After being abused by her Breed family, Nova escaped her horrible childhood. It was Ozzy who took her in and helped her get on her own two feet.
Marked by Midnight is a quick and entertaining tale from Ms. Adrian’s Midnight Breed series. It follows the game-changing events from the previous two full-length novels, but it can be read as a stand-alone. However, having knowledge of the entire Breed history and the Breed-Breedmate relationship makes it easier to jump into the story, especially considering how quickly Nova and Mathias fall in love.
There is a mystery to be solved, and Nova is at the center. Sensing an immediate attraction to Nova, Mathias’s protective nature surfaces and he is driven to find the truth while protecting Nova. Although the problem is quickly solved, the story held my interest.
I was slightly disappointed, however, that Nova’s family history was mentioned and initially seemed to be a big part of the story, only to fall off the radar. There were a couple of other situations that I wish had been addressed and resolved before the end of the story. I felt like I was able to take a peek at something that could have been a great storyline and then nothing came of it.
All in all, Marked by Midnight is an entertaining novella for fans of the Midnight Breed series. The story flows well, and it is a quick read. I look forward to the upcoming full-length book, Crave the Night, which hopefully will have more from Mathias and his new mate, Nova.
My Rating: B, Liked It
