Vampbard’s Review:

I’ve been binge-reading Christopher Rice books. I’m not quite sure what it is about his voice that draws me in, makes me feel like I’m *right there*. Maybe it’s the first person, present tense storytelling. Doesn’t matter. Anything by Mr. Rice is an auto-buy now. Someone break the news to Mr. VampBard about the Amazon one-clicks. As offering number thirty-six of the 1001 Dark Nights project, Mr. Rice bring us Dance of Desire, his first contemporary romance.

I think I really related to Amber. She has a low-life leech for a husband who she never really loved. Not in the way she’s loved Caleb since… forever. Loving someone you’re not supposed to can’t be easy. Especially an adopted sibling. What I really liked about her, however, is the fact that she was a fierce female, and didn’t get all wishy-washy about stuff. She stood her ground, and she looked out for herself. The first half-ish of the title surrounds another of Mr. Rice’s series, Desire Exchange—at least vague references to it. I’ve grown to love how empowered people are by the Desire Exchange service, which is at the core of the other series. Both men and women explore their sexuality in a safe manner. Their inhibitions are, *ahem*, suspended as they open themselves to their deepest desire. Well, Miss Amber had no need for the pricey service—because she already knew her heart’s desire, and it was Caleb.

The question here is: What to do about it? If John Q. Public believes someone is your sibling, it’s pretty bad to be seen macking all over them in public. I’m sure, since Caleb was adopted and he shared Amber’s last name, people would go all Flowers in the Attic on them. Ultimately, there was an answer. A way to make everything right—even in the good ol’ state of Texas.

Using Mr. Rice’s dry and sarcastic sense of humor (which I seriously LOVE), pretty awkward moments are handles with joviality.

“…A guy who looks like you…well, it’s just not normal for you to fly solo for this long, Caleb.”

“Unless I’m going full Brokeback Mountain in secret, you mean?”

I may have snorted over this one. But, humor isn’t the only thing Mr. Rice writes well. He can pull the drama and emotion like a puppetmaster tugs strings. Drawing me into the moment with effective literary devices and perfect word choice:

She’s trying to speak but the only things coming out of her are stuttering gasps. She’s been rendered wordless by the feel of the forbidden, by the weight of the forbidden, by the power of the forbidden.

But, all the wonderful words won’t fix weaknesses in characters. However, there weren’t any in this title. Getting to know Amber was revealing. And while I feel I connected with Caleb on a different level, I was definitely connected to both characters in an intense way, which is unusual for me. I see points of my closeness to Amber, and some with Caleb as well. Resonating with me, even in the post-reading book coma, are the way the characters handled what they though was insurmountable. And as we watch Amber and Caleb wrestle with, and finally come to terms with what their relationship is, there’s still some awkward tap dancing happening:

Still, every argument they’d had, every time they’d forced themselves to look away from each other, every frustrated attempt they’d made to connect since the night his parents died, had just been another step in one long dance of desire leading up to this very moment.

Seriously. I may have melted, and then growled when one of my offspring chose to interrupt. While we get lots of inner conflict for both Amber and Caleb in this title, we do hear from others, who could potentially reappear in future installments of the Chapel Springs series, of which this is the first title. I saw what you did there, Christopher Rice… you connected the Desire Exchange series into this title, super loosely, to connect the dots. Tricky. LOVE IT!

Mr. Rice and the publisher put a note about dubious consent in the marketing blurb. Gonna be honest. I didn’t see it that way. I don’t want to spoil the whole thing, but it honestly didn’t seem dub-con to me AT ALL. I do appreciate the warning in the blurb, though. Knowing ahead of time makes a difference, and I’m ready for whatever might come. Kudos!

I admit I’ve only read Christopher Rice’s offerings from the 1001 Dark Nights. Every. Single. One of them are worth the time—but plan to devour them in one sitting. As Dance of Desire introduces a new series and setting, I’m eager to see what comes next.

My Rating: A+ Personal Favorite

If only he hadn’t touched her.

If he hadn’t touched her, he could leave her in his rearview right now, along with Watson’s, Dallas, and the entire State of Texas. Maybe he’ll hit Colorado this time. Or Canada. Canada isn’t that much farther, but maybe an international border was just what he needed to protect his heart.

But there’s no way he can go that far now.

Because he’d touched her.

And it wasn’t like he’d had to either.

There were other ways he could have kept her from going to some crazy sex club.

Like reasoning with her. Or teasing her. Or begging her.

Telling her how he really felt, that should have been the last option. The absolutely dead-last, nuclear apocalypse option. And touching her? Well, that was beyond the nuclear option. That was a “zombies are breaking down the front door and the only way out is through the nearest window” kind of option.

And yet he’d gone ahead and done it anyway, touched her like he was some idiot teenager who couldn’t control his hormones. He’d also tasted her, inhaled her scent, felt her heat on his skin. Sensed that her hunger for him was equal to his own. Heard that hunger with his own two ears, a vibrating pulse under her every desperate breath as he’d held her in his arms.

And now it’s all falling apart. Now he’s flying down a Dallas freeway with all the windows in his truck rolled down because he’s hoping the wind will drown out his crazy thoughts. He’s been driving for hours now, aimless circles around the city. Sometimes he’ll head in the direction of old landmarks, old places he used to visit, but as soon as he gets close, he forgets about them altogether and goes back to thinking of Amber. Amber’s eyes. Amber’s skin. Amber’s anger. Amber’s passion.

Dance of Desire - Tour Teaser 2

When Amber Watson walks in on her husband in the throes of extramarital passion with one of his employees, her comfortable, passion-free life is shattered in an instant. Worse, the fate of the successful country music bar that bears her family’s name suddenly hangs in the balance. Her soon to be ex-husband is one of the bar’s official owners; his mistress, one of its employees. Will her divorce destroy her late father’s legacy?

Not if Amber’s adopted brother Caleb has anything to do with it. The wandering cowboy has picked the perfect time for a homecoming. Better yet, he’s determined to use his brains and his fists to put Amber’s ex in his place and keep the family business intact. But Caleb’s long absence has done nothing to dim the forbidden desire between him and the woman the State of Texas considers to be his sister.

Years ago, when they were just teenagers, Caleb and Amber shared a passionate first kiss beside a moonlit lake. But that same night, tragedy claimed the life of Caleb’s parents and the handsome young man went from being a family friend to Amber’s adopted brother. Has enough time passed for the two of them to throw off the roles Amber’s father picked for them all those years ago? Will their desire for each other save the family business or put it in greater danger?

One response to “Review + Excerpt: Dance of Desire by Christopher Rice

  1. I think Christopher Rice was at RT last year. Or maybe just a lot of people were talking about him. He sounds incredible though, and I’m going to have to give him a try. I can’t tell you the last time I read a male author!
