“We shall begin,” Cassandra said in a low, confident voice. “First, I must ensure that all present believe it is possible to communicate with Sarah McHenry. If there any non-believers in the room, please leave now.” She paused and waited.

I wondered about my skepticism, but I couldn’t classify myself as a true non-believer. I wanted, and I’m certain everyone else in the room wanted, to find out what happened to Sarah.

Satisfied, Cassandra continued. “We will now join hands and keep them joined throughout the session.”

I felt Kaitlin’s tight grip and Leo’s more relaxed grip. I wondered about the strength of my grip and if I would be able to keep my hands joined for the entire session. How long did a séance last? What if the spirit didn’t come?

“Our beloved Sarah, we bring you gifts from life into death,” Cassandra said. “Commune with us, Sarah, and move among us.”

Several seconds passed, and Jake repeated, “Our beloved Sarah, we bring you gifts from life into death. Commune with us, Sarah, and move among us.”

More silence and the Jake nodded in Hannah’s direction. She repeated the summons and waited several more seconds before turning to Kaitlin, who followed suit. As soon as Kaitlin finished speaking, the candle closest to Kaitlin and Hannah fell. Kaitlin gasped and dropped her hand. I heard another gasp from Hannah. Both women paled as they watched the flame catch on the fabric of the tablecloth.

Jake reached over and extinguished the candle.

“Welcome, Sarah,” Cassandra said. “We are happy you could join us. Kaitlin and Hannah please join hands and connect with the group.”

I felt Kaitlin’s moist hand, the grip even tighter.

Cassandra continued, “Sarah, we mourn your absence in our lives. Know that you are loved dearly and missed by all of us—your parents, siblings, and friends. I will ask you simple questions requiring either a yes or no answer. You can choose to communicate directly using your beautiful voice.” Cassandra paused.

Thankfully, not a sound. I wasn’t prepared to hear Sarah’s voice. The dropped candle had been enough confirmation for Cassandra, and the two women were shaken up. But I wondered if there was a logical explanation for the dropped candle. Perhaps it wasn’t secured properly in the holder. But I didn’t want to voice these concerns, lest I be considered a non-believer.

I glanced toward Leo who was watching Kaitlin and Hannah closely. Did he suspect them of foul play? I couldn’t imagine that scenario, but then I wondered at the selection of tonight’s participants. We were here for a reason. I assumed mine was to observe and possibly trigger some relevant memory. Cassandra was facilitating, and Leo was also observing. Did that mean the other six had been involved in Sarah’s death? Or knew of circumstances leading to her death? I hoped it was the latter situation.

Two more candles toppled over, their tips pointing in Hannah’s and Kaitlin’s direction. Jake moved quickly to extinguish the flames. Hannah screamed. Kaitlin yelled out, “Jesus Christ! She’s really here…Sarah, speak to us. What happened? Did someone hurt you?” And then “Yow!” She let go of my hand and Hannah’s. “Someone kicked me!” Shaken, she looked to Cassandra for guidance.

Book Blurb:

While not usually a big deal, one overlooked email would haunt teacher Gilda Greco. Had she read it, former student Sarah McHenry might still be alive.

Suspecting foul play, Constable Leo Mulligan plays on Gilda’s guilt and persuades her to participate in a séance facilitated by one of Canada’s best-known psychics. Six former students also agree to participate. At first cooperative and willing, their camaraderie is short-lived as old grudges and rivalries emerge. The séance is a bust.

Determined to solve Sarah’s murder, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers shocking revelations that could put several lives—including her own—in danger. Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?
