First Earl I See Tonight
Author: Anna Bennett
What I’m Talking About:
I found First Earl I see Tonight to be a lovely diversion on a rainy, cold Saturday. The characters are fun and multi-dimensional, and the settings are well written and easily pictured.
Fiona is strong, sweet, smart and fiercely loyal to those she loves. Her character is pretty straight forward which was great next to the complexity of Gray’s character. Gray is devoted, kind-hearted but wounded and trying to navigate a world where he trusts almost no one. As they come together, Gray learns who he is able to truly trust and finds the healing he needs to make himself whole, and Fiona is able to find safety for the family she adores.
Although the characters were fun and memorable what I enjoyed most about this novel was the setting. Once the characters left the city I found myself completely mesmerized by Gray’s country home. The descriptions were breathtaking, and I found myself wanting to walk among the crumbling rocks and the rolling fields. Like Fiona I found myself seeing the beauty in the history and the stories that the setting was begging to tell, and I was glad that some of those stories came to light as the novel continued giving me insights into both Gray and his home, filling in the gaps and helping me and Fiona understand the man that Gray had become.
I do think this novel gives a great first step into what I’m certain will be a trilogy. I was introduced to all the characters and their backgrounds and found myself wanting to know more which is exactly what an author wants when they are starting a series of any kind. Gray and Fiona were a lovely start into the lives of these families, and I’m sure Ms. Bennett will continue to give us more lovely diversions as she continues.
My Rating: B+ Liked It A Lot
