Dukes Are Forever
Author: Bec McMaster
What I’m Talking About:
Dukes Are Forever is finally here. Readers of the London Steampunk: The Blue Blood Conspiracy series have been waiting for the final showdown between the head of the Company of Rogues (CoR), Duke Malloryn, and his life-long arch-nemesis, Balfour. The story arc has been building for the past four books, even longer if you go back to the original series. Ms. McMaster does not disappoint with this sweeping series conclusion.
Malloryn and Balfour have played a life-and-death game of cat and mouse for years. Things come to a head after the CoR saved Malloryn from Balfour in Russia in the previous book. Now back in London, Malloryn grapples with the nightmares of his torture while growing even more obsessed with protecting the CoR and his wife, Adele. The constant vigilance is wearing away at his mind, body, and soul, allowing room for Adele to slip under his defenses.
Malloryn has a good heart, even though it has been hardened over many years. It is evident in the lengths he goes to keep his distance from Adele and protect the CoR. Yet he starts a cruel game of seduction with Adele because he’s uncertain if she’s an enemy agent. And with Adele refusing to open up to Malloryn (because that would give him more power over her), their game gains momentum, capturing them both in the web of their own desires. I am glad that the truth of Malloryn’s secret life comes to light within the first third of the book. Equally important is that Adele pushes forward to help Malloryn, despite the hurt Malloryn inflicted on her heart. These two components make the story much stronger than if they pair had dragged out their mistrust and secrets.
Malloryn and Adele do not have an easy road to their HEA. Their relationship started under an umbrella of deceit, yet Malloryn still married Adele. I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if Adele had been more truthful from the beginning, but honestly, I don’t think it would have gotten through to Malloryn. He would have only seen her as another person to protect, rather than fall in love with the smart and lively woman. There is a lot of back and forth; the emotional roller coaster is tough, but in the end, worth the ride. As individuals, both are formidable, but together, they are unstoppable.
In the end, I finish Dukes Are Forever feeling a bit melancholy as I say goodbye to this wonderful series. A clever and exciting blend of paranormal, steampunk, and historical romance, the London Steampunk series has provided me with hours of entertainment, taking me on a thrilling adventure. Ms. McMaster’s world is one I hope to visit again.
My Rating: B+ Liked It A Lot
