Celebrating the release of her newest title, HARD CHROME, Author Vanessa North gives us a look into her heroine, Tanner Ellis.

Character Interview—Tanner Ellis

This questionnaire was popularized as a parlor game by Marcel Proust. It’s a fun activity with friends, but also a really great way to get to know a character. Here’s a character interview using some of Proust’s questions with Hard Chrome’s heroine, Tanner Ellis. Enjoy!

  • What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Sitting around the kitchen table with a good bottle of wine and my family, working on a puzzle together.

  • What is your most marked characteristic?

I’m pretty much willing to roll up my sleeves and get to work on anything, anytime, anywhere. Working is so much easier than talking about my feelings.

  • What is it that you most dislike?

People who lie and cheat to get ahead.

  • What is your greatest fear?

Failing my family’s business.

  • Which living person do you most despise?

I’d say my ex, Craig, but he’s honestly not worth the energy.

  • What is the quality you most like in a man?

Am I allowed to say big, strong hands? Because I really, really like those.

  • What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Humor. My mom died when I was young, but I remember she would laugh a lot. My sister Tiffani reminds me of her—she can always find something to make me smile.

  • What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

Can we say imposter syndrome? I have an Ivy League degree, and I’m still scared people will figure out I’m nothing special.

  • What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Dishonesty and manipulation.

  • What do you most value in your friends?

They keep me from overthinking everything.

  • What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Chastity. Sex is fun and a great way to blow off steam and stress. And we’re supposed to pretend it’s not or that we don’t like it? GTFOH.

  • On what occasions do you lie?

A diplomatic compliment isn’t exactly a lie, is it? Okay, so maybe lies of omission are more my style. I definitely play my cards too close to my chest sometimes and it totally bites me in the ass.

  • Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

I’m a grammar cop. I totally correct people’s grammar when I’m on the defensive.

  • If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’d like to be less rigid, and more laid back like my sisters. I know it’s all a defense mechanism, but I wish I didn’t need defense mechanisms.

He’s tough. But she’s tougher.

Tanner Ellis left American Heavy Metal in her rearview mirror. She didn’t see the beauty behind the grease stains and the polished chrome until it was too late. Now she’s back, determined to save her father’s legacy—and bring the South’s premier classic-car shop into the new century. Nothing is going to stop her—especially not the sexy tech who refuses to follow her lead.

American Heavy Metal is the only home Duke Wilson’s ever known, and no high-heeled, sharp-tongued princess is going to take it away. He tolerates Tanner’s advice, and it’s fun to push her buttons, but she doesn’t belong in the shop—never has, never will. The sooner she realizes that, the sooner he can find his new normal.

When Tanner falters, revealing the pain beneath her bravado, Duke comforts her the only way he knows how. And when violence from his past threatens their future, she’ll be there for him, offering him the one thing he’s always wanted—a shot at a real family. He just has to convince himself to take it.
