April 7, 2020: Novellas: Do you get enough or want more?

Novellas are a mixed bag. When they are short stories from series I already read – I tend to love them. I love finding out more about side characters or small events that aren’t notable enough to make it into the full-length novels. These are wonderful and usually fulfilling.

I also tend to like holiday-centric novellas. These can be fun because the characters are celebrating an event and they come together around a holiday. However, I may be left wanting more if I ended up enjoying the story.

In the romance genre, the best novellas work when the author establishes a solid backstory for the main characters. I am not a fan of insta-love stories, and in the short-format of a novella, it’s hard to create a solid romance without relying on a quick/immediate love connection. So when an author can create a history–that the couple were friends previously or it is a second chance romance–then I tend to like the stories and am not left wanting more. Otherwise, they don’t work well for me.
