Audiobook review: Nice Werewolves Don’t Bite Vampires by Author

Audiobook cover of Nice Werewolves Don't Bite Vampires by Molly HarperTylene is the “black sheep” of the McClaine werewolf pack. While her parents want her to fit in, get mated, raise pups, and work for the pack businesses, she broke the mold by going to community college, getting a degree, and starting her own business, which she hides from her family. She only feels herself when she’s with her new vampire friends, including sexy music teacher Alex. When a vandal starts targeting the vampires in town, Tylene worries her family may have found out her secrets and is retaliating.

Nice Werewolves Don’t Bite Vampires features Tylene, the younger cousin of Joelene who is one of the original Half-Moon Hallow gang from way back in the Jane Jameson series. Tylene gives readers a look inside her family, highlighting some of the red-neck, backwater ways of her pack. She struggles with her conflicting desires to make her pack and parents happy, yet live her own life knowing it would disappoint them. Luckily she has Joelene, who married a *gasp* human, to help her navigate the murky waters. And while we get a look at some of the backwards ways of Tylene’s pack, I like that the author balances the stereotypes with the pack alpha, who has wise words and a big heart for Tylene.

Alex is newish to town, but has ties to the gang. He is happy in the little town and falls for Tylene the moment he saves her from a falling stack of books and bookshelf at the local library. Due to said incident, Tylene needs to relocate her workspace from the library, which is how she discovers Jane’s bookstore and becomes fast friends with the gang. I love how after one week Dick believes Ty is family and the group just absorbs her. Yet she continues to be conflicted. It’s something she’s always wanted, friends who listen to and value her, but her upbringing tells her it’s all wrong.

Narration: A Molly Harper audiobook wouldn’t be the same without the terrific work of Amanda Ronconi. She has the perfect amount of southern charm, bundled with sharp wit and droll sarcasm befitting of Ms. Harper’s characters. Each Half-Moon Hollow book is written in first person narrative, with each book featuring a different female lead, and Ms. Ronconi uses the same narrator voice for each book. Therefore, many of her character voices sound identical, most noticeably the female characters. Yet, she breathes life into each character, making it easy to follow the story.

Nice Werewolves Don’t Bite Vampires is a wonderful mix of Molly Harper’s trademark humor, a sweet romance, and an intriguing mystery. I laughed out loud more than once at silly jokes referencing pop culture and people just being silly. Every character has a bit of snark, and Amanda Ronconi gives the dialogue just the right emphasis, pulling off the sarcasm seamlessly.

About the Book:

Tylene McClaine, black sheep of the McClaine Half Moon Hollow werewolf pack, has spent a lifetime blocking out the criticisms of her boisterous pack. They say she’s too bookish, too sarcastic, and worst of all, too picky when it comes to finding a nice werewolf boy and settling down.

But when she meets vampire and Half Moon Hollow music teacher Alex Bonfils, Tylene starts to wonder if she could create the life she’s always wanted. She takes every precaution to meet her sexy vamp in secret, but when a vandal around town starts targeting vampire businesses, she fears her family might have found her out. When the damage in town escalates, Tylene and Alex join forces with Jane Jameson, Dick Cheney, and the whole vampire gang to find the culprit and save Half Moon Hollow before it’s too late!
