November 16th: Do authors/narrators actions, political beliefs, etc. impact your view of their work?

Sometimes and usually in a negative way.

If I see an author behaving badly – harassing readers, having their fans gang up on someone, etc. Then I block them and ban them from my reading lists. However, I’m happy to report that so far those authors are ones I haven’t and didn’t plan to read. On the flip side, if an innocent author is targeted, I’ll buy their book to support them. I will say that I’m sure I’ve missed several over the years because I try to avoid drama.

If an author supports a political view I don’t, but it’s just a difference of opinions, I don’t tend to let it guide my reading habits. But if they go out of their way to spread hate or are hurtful, then I don’t give them future support. The toughest for me has been J.K. Rowling and her transphobic statements. I do not support or condone her statements and views. I do not plan to support her directly in the future. However, I love Harry Potter and his amazing world. I cannot say I’ll never watch a HP movie or read a HP book ever again. It’s tough.
