#TackleMyTBR2022 with Jennifer: January Update

Posted January 29, 2022 by Jennifer in Reading Challenge Tags:

The Tackle My TBR Reading Challenge is returning for 2022! I will continue to use the challenge to help me focus more on older releases on my TBR. I didn’t quite make my goal of 60 books in 2021 so I’m setting my 2022 goal at Field Goal: read 37-48 TBR books.

You can find out more about #TackleMyTBR2022 over at Kimberly Faye Reads.

5 out of 48 books read

Books read in January:

  1. Against the Dawn (Shaede Assassin #4) by Amanda Bonilla  – ebook
  2. The Jackal (BDB Prison Camp #1) by J.R. Ward – A book you bought
  3. Iron and Magic (The Iron Covenant #1; Kate Daniels #9.5) by Ilona Andrews  – free space
  4. Shadows at Midnight (Shaede Assassin #5) by Amanda Bonilla
  5. Magic Triumphs (Kate Daniels #10) by Ilona Andrews – audiobook

For this reading challenge I will only count books I purchased before 2022. But with the addition of the Quarterly Bingo card I will have titles I list but don’t count for my person goal of 48 books. These will be 2022 releases I grab from Netgalley, Edelweiss, the library or purchase.

Mini Reviews:

I love a good urban fantasy series and Amanda Bonilla’s Shaede Assassin series checks all my UF reader boxes. Against the Dawn is a great installment to this series, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I can’t believe I’ve taken so long to continue this series. I read the first book in 2016 and should have stayed with the series until I finished it. After that cliffhanger ending I knew I was reading the next book, Shadows at Midnight which I’m currently reading and will update this post with my thoughts once I’m done. {UPDATE} So I finished Shadows at Midnight. OMG so many emotions while reading. I’ve always been torn between Ty and Xander but this one pushed me more towards Xander. Then that ending! I can’t wait for the next book. I’m so glad that Bonilla is finally releasing it this year.

If you watched my monthly posts last year, you’ll know I’ve been on a Ward kick trying to play catch up. The Jackal is the first book in the Prison Camp set in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world. Pretty good start to another BDB spin off. The connection to one of the brothers was unexpected but after a few flashback scenes it was pretty easy to figure out. The Jackal was a middle road read for me, I enjoyed it and will read the next in the series, The Wolf.

I’ve been holding off finishing Ilona Andrew’s Kate Daniels series because I don’t want it to end. It was recommended to me by a few blogging buddies to read Iron and Magic before Magic Triumphs. Hugh’s first book was enjoyable and classic Andrews. I can see why I was told to read it before the last Kate book. There’s a cameo from a couple of characters and I’m sure it plays into Kate’s book. I purchased the ebook for my Kindle not long after release day but decided to listen for faster reading. It took me a minute to get into the narration. I enjoy Steven West’s work on romance titles but for some reason he wasn’t a prefect fit for me until about 1/2 through the book. My biggest pet peeve was how he pronounced Hugh’s last name, d’Ambray with the D. I read it without like Django (movie with Jamie Fox a few years back). I even think that’s how other narrators in Kate Daniels world pronounced it. Looking forward to the next book.

I am currently listening to Magic Triumphs and will update post with my thoughts when I’m finished. {UPDATE} It was bittersweet listening to the late Kate book but I enjoyed everything about it. I’m hoping we see more of Kate & Curran’s kiddo. Great writing and narration as usual.
