Author: Nalini Singh
What I’m Talking About:
Ivan Mercant, head of the Mercant family security, believes he’s a monster because of the way his brain is wired due to his mother taking the Jax drug while she was pregnant. When on a training exercise, Ivan meets a mysterious shifter, Lei, and is smitten – something that’s never happened to the Psy. She even agrees to see him once he tells her about some of the darkness within him. However, after Soleil’s pack is brutally attacked by some Psy, she goes missing, and Ivan assumes she choose to leave him.
After not loving the previous book, Storm Echo reminds me of why I’m still reading this series after twenty plus books: It’s an amazing series and Nalini Singh is a gifted storyteller. The characters are beautiful, unique, and caring. We have two new identities (but tied into previous storylines). There is a new Psy power and a new featured changeling. There is a melding of some newer characters (Mercant) and some older (DarkRiver). The story moves from beginning to end. There are little mysteries to understand and solve (what happened to Lei, where is her pack) and bigger things (will they be able to save the relocated Psy?) and there are huge developments on the Architect/Scarab Queen front. It took a really long time to build to this point in the series, and now I want to go back and see how the seeds were planted by Ms. Singh to bring us to the present.
Lei and Ivan have a deep connection from the beginning. Although it’s not a true insta-love situation because it takes time for Ivan to process his feelings in this post-Silence world. I like that they have to fight for one another but don’t fight each other. Even Ivan’s threats to leave Lei to protect her aren’t serious. I love that they work together to fight the dangers, and he allows Lei to use her natural strength and abilities to help, even when dangerous. He protects her but doesn’t smoother her. They make a unique and beautiful team: open and honest with one another.
The overall story outside the romance is solid and standalone, but part of the overall Scarab storyline completely. It finally makes huge progress and is exciting in its own right.
Storm Echo is a beautiful romance with an exciting storyline that fans won’t want to miss!!
My Rating: B+
About the Book:
Silence has fallen. The Psy are free to feel emotion. Free to love. But Silence was never a prison for Ivan Mercant. The biggest threat to his future lies dormant in his brain—a psychic monster that wants only to feed. And now, the brutal leash he’s kept on that monster is slipping. He prepared for this day, for the end of Ivan Mercant . . . but that was before he met Lei.
As primal as she is human, this wild changeling brings color into his life, laughter to his soul. Then the dream shatters in a rain of blood, in silent bodies in the snow. Lei is gone. Vanished without a trace . . . until he meets strangely familiar eyes across a busy San Francisco street.
Soleil Bijoux Garcia is a healer who has lost everything. She exists in a world of desolate aloneness . . . till the day she finds herself face-to-face with a lethal stranger. The animal who is her other half knows this man, but her memories are tattered fragments. Sorrow and a need for vengeance are all that drive her. Her mission? To kill the alpha of the DarkRiver leopard pack.
But fate has other plans. Soon, a deadly soldier who believes himself a monster and a broken healer might be all that stand between life and death for the entire Psy race.
