October 11th: How long do you give a new-to-you series to decide if you like it?
Generally, I’ll give a series two books. Sometimes a first book can be challenging because not only does it need to tell a story, but it also must develop the world and establish characters. That’s a lot for one book, so unless I absolutely hate something about the book or series premise, I’ll give the second book a try. If I’m on the fence after two books, I may give the third a try just to really be certain – especially if the series has good reviews from trusted sources.
Similarly, I will give a series at least two “strikes” (two bad books) before I quit it and usually more if it’s a series I’ve been reading for a while.
