book cover of The Body & The Soul by Deirdre Hutchins“Alvarez!” Minnie called from the front.  “A lady on line two says she has important info for your case.”

Miguel looked at Gina, who raised an eyebrow in response.  “Put her through,” he instructed Minnie, then quickly lifted the desk phone when line two lit up. “Detective Alvarez.”

A bold woman’s voice came through the line. “Hi.  Detective Mike Alvarez, right?”

“Speaking.”  Miguel locked eyes with Gina.  She was intrigued as she watched the scene before her unfold.

“Oh good.  I have information for you for your case on Grace Collins,” the woman said.

“Grace Collins? I don’t have a case on Grace Collins.”  Miguel shrugged at Gina and his partner instantly began searching their database for the name.

“You will.  I’m positive it will be your case,” the woman said.  “She was murdered last night.”

“Did you see it happen?” Miguel asked slowly, not sure how to process this bizarre conversation.

“No,” the woman replied.

“Then how, may I ask, do you know this information?” the detective asked just as Gina shook her head back at Miguel.

“Nothing in the database, no missing persons. Nothing on a Grace Collins,” Gina told him with a frown.

“She told me,” the woman said with a small sigh.

“I thought you said she was murdered?” Miguel asked, trying to piece it all together.

“Yes.  I’m a psychic medium and the spirit of Grace Collins is here in my living room with intricate details I think you’ll be interested in,” the woman said again.

Miguel hung his head for just a second.  He dealt with crazies all the time, but it never got any easier.  He had a full case load and the case against Mack to present to the District Attorney of Fresno.  He didn’t have time for this.

“Ma’am, there is no Grace Collins even reported missing.  I’m sure you think you are talking to her ghost, but I assure you this is just a hallucination,” Miguel explained slowly, assuming that the woman was likely on drugs.  Although she spoke clearly and purposefully like a confident woman, her words told a different story.

“Daphne Winters,” the woman responded.  Her tone was so crisp it jarred him.

“Not ‘ma’am.’  My name is Daphne.  And I can assure you that the case of Grace Collins will hit your desk.  And when it does you need to call me,” the woman explained and then ended the call.

About the Book:

Most people think of Daphne Winters as a quirky psychic, prone to blurting out painful truths and talking about weird things like death and ghosts. And now the ghost of Grace Collins has appeared and is asking for her help, right around the same time the cops find Grace’s murdered body floating in nearby Millerton Lake. And Daphne likes ghosts more than she does most people, so there is no way she’s turning Grace down – whether the local cops like it or not.

Daphne’s unconventional investigative methods will give the local P.D. more than they bargained for, as the case takes them all down the twists and turns of a murder mystery that is so much more than it seems.
