Leprechauns and Lemon Bars by Danielle Garrett
Leprechauns and Lemon Bars is a fun novella set in the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries world. While it could be enjoyed as a standalone, I highly recommend listeners begin with the first title in the series, Sprinkles and Sea Serpents.
The story is a great look at main character Ella and her deepening relationship with monster hunter, Orion. I love that the pair has found their stride and are trying to take a quiet getaway weekend. Now that Ella has agreed to work with the Order, Orion can share the details of his work and there are no more secrets, allowing them to happily move forward.
Almost immediately, their weekend is interrupted by an unhappy leprechaun who accuses the pair of stealing his hat. He also makes mention of some magic stones, which is something the Order has been looking into. In order to get Larry the leprechaun off their backs and discover more about the stones, they agree to help him in his search. The “mystery” of the missing hat isn’t overly complex nor filled with a big adventure, but it is just right for the novella-length story.
Narration: The story is shared in the first person POV of heroine Ella. Ms. Ronconi performs with an upbeat cadence, using a friendly, girl-next-door quality that suits Ella. She keeps the story moving with a steady flow. She alters her voice for each character’s dialogue based on gender, age, and (when called for) species, making it obvious different characters are speaking. Her male characters are generally deeper.
Overall, I enjoyed Leprechauns and Lemon Bars and recommend it to fans of the series.
About the Book:
Shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold, and … one irate leprechaun. Spring has sprung, and I’m finally getting out of town with my monster-hunting boyfriend. However, our cozy little rental cabin in the woods turns out to have a serious problem—an angry leprechaun infestation. Before we can get back to our romantic rendezvous, we have to prove we didn’t steal a magic hat. Piece of cake, right?
