Audiobook review: A Grave Robbery by Deanna Raybourn

audiobook cover of A Grave Robbery by Deanna RaybournVeronica and Stoker are back at home working on Lord Rosemorran’s collection when their employer comes to Stoker with a special assignment. He has purchased a wax figure that looks similar to Madame Tussaud‘s Sleeping Beauty, and his youngest Rose would like it to have clockworks inserted so it breaths just like Madame Tussaud‘s. When Veronica and Stoker start working on the figure, they discover she’s actually a human who has been completely preserved in wax.

A Grave Robbery is a thrilling mystery and exciting adventure for Veronica and Stoker. I enjoyed every minute of the tale. I love the pair’s banter and back-and-forth now that they are secure in their relationship and feelings for one another. They joke and bicker, but they love and it’s sweet and fun. The couple has come such a long way, and I adore how much Stoker loves Veronica exactly as she is. I love that they continue to develop and grow in both their academic endeavors and in their personal relationships.

Veronica and Stoker’s camaraderie and romance has unlocked a new level of enjoyment. I love how they work together and love one another through the good and the not so good. They understand one another so clearly and are all the better for it. They joke and jest; they console and love. But this isn’t a romance, their relationship just adds so much to the entire story. I loved watching them solve the mystery of the mysterious Beauty together. They are either on the same page or respectful of the other’s intentions when they aren’t 100% in agreement.

Narration: The story is shared via Veronica’s first person POV, with the narrator and Veronica’s dialogue one and the same. Ms. Masters alters all dialogue and her range of accents is excellent and sound authentic to this untrained ear. She changes her voice based on the characters’ regional and socio-economical background. Ms. Masters’s performance of Veronica is perfect. She nails Veronica’s no nonsense, adventurous attitude. But she also captures Veronica’s just-under-the-surface vulnerability. Additionally, she gives Stoker a sexy, unfettered gruffness that sharpens with concern when Veronica is in danger or when the pair is sparring.

The Veronica Speedwell Mysteries is one of the best there is, and A Grave Robbery is a superb addition to this amazing series.

About the Book:

Lord Rosemorran has purchased a wax figure of a beautiful reclining woman and asks Stoker to incorporate a clockwork mechanism to give the Rosemorran Collection its own Sleeping Beauty in the style of Madame Tussaud’s. But when Stoker goes to cut the mannequin open to insert the mechanism, he makes a gruesome discovery: this is no wax figure. The mannequin is the beautifully preserved body of a young woman who was once very much alive. But who would do such a dreadful thing, and why?

Sleuthing out the answer to this question sets Veronica and Stoker on their wildest adventure yet. From the underground laboratories of scientists experimenting with electricity to resurrect the dead in the vein of Frankenstein to the traveling show where Stoker once toured as an attraction, the gaslit atmosphere of London in October is the perfect setting for this investigation into the unknown. Through it all, the intrepid pair is always one step behind the latest villain—a man who has killed once and will stop at nothing to recover the body of the woman he loved. Will they unmask him in time to save his next victim? Or will they become the latest figures to be immortalized in his collection of horrors?
