What I’m Talking About:
Well, its about time. I’ve had Club Shadowlands in mind to read and enjoy since a former blogging partner read and raved on Cherise Sinclair’s books. In fact, I took advantage and added this permanent freebie to my stack eleven years ago. But, it took a reading challenge or two this year to get me dusting it off the shelf and diving in.
Club Shadowlands is the first in the Masters of the Shadowlands series. It dove right in from the naive, yet intrepid heroine’s perspective as she is looking for shelter in a rain storm after her car went off the road and stumbles upon an exclusive, private club. Jessica’s big-eyed wonder at her first encounter with BDSM play is felt by me the reader, and I enjoyed the combo of interest and wariness that any thinking woman would have.
On the other side of the coin, Cherise Sinclair slips in short bits from Zachary, Master Z’s perspective so the reader gets his seasoned view of the innocent woman who has stumbled through his door. He notices her low self-esteem and makes it clear he treasures her looks and sees her better than she sees herself.
I’ll stop right here to say that I highly approve of that message from the author right before chapter one that made it clear that Club Shadowlands is a work of fiction and the speed at which things moved in the relationship department was commensurate to the page count and that in real life BDSM play or long-term pairings should be handled with more time and lots of communication and trust building with the ‘safe and consensual‘ at the foremost.
Ms. Sinclair wrote an amazing Dom in Master Z. The man can read submissive Jessica like a road map. He’s older and more experienced, the discipline of former military, has a psychology education and career that really increases his skill set, particularly in his sexual lifestyle so he is careful and caring even while he has that mischievous twinkle in his eye when he helps Jessica explore her true sexual nature.
The romance moved swiftly, but I appreciated that it didn’t gallop off into the sunset and stopped in a place where there was something solid between the pair. I enjoyed their heated encounters at the club which didn’t go much beyond a spanking and restraints with a gentle approach to the D/s dynamics since Jessica is a newbie. I enjoyed getting introduced to the surrounding characters and the set up for the rest of the series.
Though, my mood has been away from erotic romance for a few years now this jaunt into light BDSM romance that I savored has me interested in pursuing more in the series and more from Cherise Sinclair. Most erotic romance fans have made their way to this author and newbies really shouldn’t miss this one.
My Rating: A- Enjoyed A Lot
About the Book:
Her car disabled during a tropical storm, Jessica Randall discovers the isolated house where she’s sheltering is a private bondage club. At first shocked, she soon becomes aroused watching the interactions between the Doms and their subs. But she’s a professional woman–an accountant–and surely isn’t a submissive . . . is she?
Master Z hasn’t been so attracted to a woman in years. But the little sub who has wandered into his club intrigues him. She’s intelligent. Reserved. Conservative. After he discovers her interest in BDSM, he can’t resist tying her up and unleashing the passion she hides within.
