Audiobook review: How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back by Diana Rowland

audiobook cover of How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back by Diana Rowland

Picking up a couple months after the conclusion of the previous title, our story finds Angel living a somewhat normal life, for a zombie that is. She’s loving her job at the morgue, she’s taking martial arts classes, she’s passed her GED and is getting help with her dyslexia, and she’s getting to work in the zombie lab with Dr. Nikus. Things start to go south when Pietro goes missing and it looks like the Zombie Mafia (now Tribe) has a trader.

How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back is a high-octane adventure that had me on the edge of my seat from the get go. The story is intense and exciting. Rowland has achieved a new level with the plot and action in this one! I love the premise and the pulse-pounding tension. Who can Angel trust? Will the Tribe survive? (I love the upgraded name to Tribe.) I also love that the group takes a road trip, bringing Angel to New York City and far away from her small comfort zone in Louisiana.

While the group is tracking down what happened to Pietro, Angel and her Zombie Baby Phillip are experiencing all sorts of side effects from an unfinished test Dr. Nikus was running. Their bond is heartwarming and the worsening condition adds an additional layer of urgency to the story. I also like how Angel has a heart-felt conversation with Kyle. It’s great to learn more about the supporting characters, but it also helps Angel understand her own feelings.

A LOT happens in this one. There are fights and chases, kidnappings, and Angel even shoots herself in the butt! I like that even though bad stuff happens around and to Angel, it’s mostly because of who she works with and against. I like that she’s not shit on for the sake of having bad stuff happen to the heroine.

While I could continue to heap praises on this one, there were a couple things that kept it from being a perfect read. First, we discover that Pietro has a rare zombie power that is a bit too much of a reach for me. The zombie science is great, but this ability left me shaking my head. Second, I didn’t love the last scene of the book, which I cannot explain without spoilers. But it left me feeling like things moved backwards a bit.

Narration: The story is shared via the first person POV of Angel. McLemore utilizes a lively, southern-accented female voice for Angel/the narrator. Her voice well-suited for Angel, and I adore her performance. McLemore slightly alters her voice for the dialogue based on character gender, with slight variances between each character. Her male characters aren’t overly deep, and they often come off stilted and stiff, but I’m used to them now. She adds a lot of great emotion for Angel, helping me get caught up in Angel’s world.

Overall, I thought How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back was fabulous and loved it – mostly. I cannot wait to get to the next book to see what happens next.
