As both a reader and a writer, SETTING plays a huge part in any story for me. It’s like an ever-present character—solid and reliable, yet able to hold secrets and tantalize all five senses. When writing my novels, I find great joy in transporting readers to the perfect location…

book cover of The Glass Bottom Boat by Laura ThomasIn my “Flight to Freedom” series, the first book includes a wedding, a kidnapping, and a dramatic chase on the stunning Caribbean island of Jamaica.

Many years ago, we were on a family vacation on that particular island when the initial idea for The Glass Bottom Boat novel was sparked. Even though I have a (thoroughly irrational) fear of drowning, I was intrigued by the notion of a glass bottom boat, so we planned to go out on one as a treat on our last day at the resort.

Unfortunately, we woke up to a mammoth windstorm which prevented any boats to go out on the ocean that day. The glass bottom boat opportunity blew away in said storm and I was bitterly disappointed! And then… my imagination was set alight as I considered what could happen on such a boat, and exactly how petrifying it would be for someone (like me) who was afraid of drowning. Bring on the romantic suspense! I took photographs, scribbled notes, and tucked away memories as a storyline unfolded.

I’ll admit, I love to travel, and it’s even better in the name of “research” for my books! I’ve taken readers to places such as the beautiful beaches of Jamaica and Mexico, the gloriously rugged Oregon Coast, to a winter wonderland in British Columbia, and back to my roots in jolly old England.

“Everybody walks past a thousand story ideas every day. The good writers are the ones who see five or six of them. Most people don’t see any.” Orson Scott Card

I think this quote not only applies to story ideas, but also to story settings, being able to absorb that sense of place and make it somewhere I long to take my reader.

And so, if a page-turning, suspenseful story of hope set on a gorgeous tropical island sounds appealing to you wherever you are right now, I invite you to dive into The Glass Bottom Boat
