What I’m Talking About:

There’s nothing like a deadly curse to move love along in this far future romance of a human and an alien who are the victims of a petulant ex. Veronica Scott’s The Sectors sci-fi romance series has become a favorite in recent years so I was happy she re-leased this short novella that was previously part of an unavailable past anthology.

The story jumps right in with a quick intro of human office manager, Amelia, who works for her planet’s local Sectors Office. She’s had what she thinks is an unrequited crush on a certain attractive alien special enforcement agent. Little does she know that Hagan returns her interest, but he has to tie off loose ends with a woman back home whom his family and hers had a loose understanding that they’d mate at some point. Unfortunately, that woman doesn’t take rejection well, and a fast and furious mystical adventure ensues.

Because it’s a novella, there’s not a lot of worldbuilding about The Sectors universe, the character backstories or a strong romance progression. But, that said, this is a solid standalone piece and there is an engaging fully-fledged, exciting story with more than a smidge of spice.

I enjoyed the way the timed curse pushes the suspense up steadily to a climax moment and enjoyed the treasure hunt-style action as Amelia and Hagan have to find the odd assortment of ingredients her aunt, a powerful witch, requires to break the curse. While they’re hunting, the curse is actively opposing them with various ways it tries to prevent them from getting what they need or finishing the curse-breaking spell.

I liked this pair and their quick adventure that leaves off at a good happy for now conclusion. This makes a good sampling of the author’s work and the series.

My Rating: B+ Liked It A Lot

About the Book:

Amellia Taneek loved her job as the office manager for a group of Sectors agents from various organizations, all based out of her central location. She enjoyed the challenges of handling administrative details for them and the excitement of constantly meeting new offworlders. She was especially intrigued by Hagan Raljarr, seven feet of green, scaled, muscular SCIA agent, and more than a little curious about his tail. Hey, she was a healthy unmarried, unattached female and there was no rule against dating a co-worker.

But so far he’d shown confusing signs of reciprocating her interest.

Hagan was an honorable warrior and before he could pursue his definite interest in Amellia, who might even be his fated mate, he had to clear up one little detail – the engagement contract he’d been entered into as a child with a female from his own planet. They barely knew each other and she was highly ambitious. Surely in this modern day and age she’d be happy for him to sever the contract and set her free, right? Leaving him in the perfect position to begin courting the lovely human.

But the jilted fiancée sends a mysterious box across the galaxy to him and when he unwisely opens it, a powerful love curse is activated, striking both him and Amellia. They’ll die at dawn if the curse isn’t broken. With help from Amellia’s aunt, who is said to have magic powers, the pair set out on a desperate quest for three special ingredients needed to break the spell. Over the course of a very long night, will Hagan and Amellia find their way to a relationship, break the curse in time and survive? Is such a thing even possible?

This 23K word novella first appeared in the Supra Vellum Anthology, which is no longer available. No new material has been added.
