Audiobook review: Steel’s Edge by Ilona Andrews
Steel’s Edge, the fourth and final book in The Edge series, is definitely my favorite of the bunch! The story feels more like the Ilona Andrews’s writing that I know and love (when compared with the first three books). The humor is on the mark. The post-fight scene where Charlotte compares Richard to a Cuisine Art is hilarious! And while this story is lengthy, it follows a solid plot line without unnecessary side plots or parts that drag on. It is well written with a tight plot, and it ends the series in a great place.
Also, the main couple is enjoyable to read. I adore Charlotte and Richard. Their love grows organically out of respect, friendship, and mutual danger. They experience strong desire, but it does not cross into obsession. The story is an adventure with the couple working together towards a common goal. I like that they communicate and appreciate one another.
Narration: Steel’s Edge is shared via the third person POV; primarily that of Charlotte, Richard, George, and Sophie, but there are also sections from other side characters. Raudman attempts to give each character a unique, age-appropriate voice. She works in accents, attitude, and emotion to keep the listener engaged. Males are slightly deeper. Some characters sound similar, but not so much to be confusing. Raudman successfully adds vocal twists to the paranormal creatures, making them each unique.
Overall, I enjoyed my re-read of The Edge series. I liked seeing the author’s writing mature with each book. I also enjoyed revisiting the series which crosses over into my favorite Andrews’s series, The Innkeeper Chronicles.
