April Evans is broke. She’s had to close her beloved tattoo shop, rent out her home, and take a job teaching art at a resort for room and board. Things couldn’t get worse until she finds out that her cabin mate for the summer is none other than Daphne Love, the woman her ex-fiancée’s dumped April for.
Daphne is a wreck after her perfect life falls apart when the love of her life breaks things off. A friend gets her a summer job at a resort in New Hampshire which seems promising, but she has no idea why her surly cabin mate seems to hate her.
While one doesn’t need to have read Dream On, Ramona Riley, the first book in Blake’s Clover Lake series, to enjoy Get Over It, April Evans, it does introduce April and provides insight into her long-term friendship with Ramona. They have grown distant in the two years since Ramona moved to LA, and their strained relationship is one of the things impacting April’s well-being.
April and Daphne have a lot in common and develop a friendship despite the awkward beginning. New friend Sasha helps pull the trio together, but also realizes there is a spark between Daphne and April, so she subtly pushes them together. The book is a lovely tale about two women discovering and learning to love themselves. Daphne has had a sheltered life and never really been on her own. She’s young and naive. She molds herself to please others. Breaking free of her habits is hard, but she’s developing a great support network at Clover Lake. April feels stuck and left behind. Her once fiancée moved on, her best friend has moved on, she’s closed her shop… she is lonely and alone, but unsure how to fix it. Allowing herself to fall for Daphne is freeing. She wants to let her in and stop deflecting.
I love that Daphne and April clear the air about their mutual ex fairly quickly into the book, rather than drag out a secret with the potential to ruin their budding friendship. Even though there is the potential for drama, Daphne and April connect because they communicate, even if and when April deflects and hides and pretends everything is alright. Daphne sees past all that and calls her on it. Even after their first time together they don’t shy away from difficult conversations and even bring up Elena.
Get Over It, April Evans is a quick, enjoyable read. I love that April and Daphne have fun together and genuinely enjoy being around one another.
