What I’m Talking About:
An office romance, alien-style with the crackling of attraction, ahem, loathing. The boss and the temp are setting the office files on fire. Cara Bristol is one of my go-to authors ,and I barely read the blurbs at this point. I’m not one for office romance, but if she’s writing it, I’m there for it- because… fun aliens and intriguing sci-fi worlds, right?
Grumpy Alien Boss starts with a desperate human gal who is a veteran skilled office assistant to executives, but in a sudden catastrophic turn of events – a cheating boss covering his tail feathers, she’s fired and blacklisted from any company on earth. So, time to go beyond earth, she decides and signs up for a galactic temp agency and heads off to Oberian for a job that will pay the bills, but she has no intention of putting up with a bad boss ever again.
Meanwhile, Stratos, a brilliant inventor with bad people skills, loses his assistant, who picks the wrong time- anytime being the wrong time, that is- to go on maternal leave. He’s not exactly an easy boss- he’s great, really if only his specific, one-way of doing things is followed and one has the thick skin to politely ignore his social issues. HR seems to have lost his number… so, time to hit the temp agency for a, hopefully, trainable human to fill in.
The clash is epic and these two strong-willed people find each other intractable about their systems of doing things. However, it is not long before Savannah and Stratos start figuring it out- on the job and off. She’s just temporary and they both know it, but there is a longing for more. Beyond the steamed up romance, they must partner against something more insidious than office politics because someone’s not happy when they come to a detente and are working well together- is someone in his spend-thrift and difficult family?
As I said, I barely look at the blurbs now. Cara Bristol has a nice balance of the light banter and conflicts of character quirks and romantic encounters that can steam up after a reasonable amount of time working out the personal conflicts. She also develops fascinating alien worlds and aliens themselves, but then lavishes on a strong suspense plot to give it the drive forward. I thought Savannah and Stratos were a fun pair, especially when they were sparring, but also when they were a team working against the trouble.
Grumpy Alien Boss kicked off the GAL Friday series nicely, and I look forward to more light-hearted, steamy alien romance, and office antics.
