June 2nd: What are your favorite beach reads?

I don’t really have “beach reads,” in that I tend to just stick to my schedule and read what comes next.

That said, to me a beach read is one that is easy, breezy, and fun that you cannot put down. There can be some deeper emotions, but there needs to be a happy ending. With that in mind, here are a few recommendations to enjoy by the shore, pool, or in your backyard this summer:

THE DEAL by Elle Kennedy (Off-Campus #1): He needs a tutor. She wants a football player to notice her. Hockey Captain Garrett and Music Major Hannah make a deal that she’ll help him with his studies and he’ll fake date her to give her some cred. I originally read this when it came out over a decade ago, and recently re-read it before the Amazon Prime TV show debut. It is one of my favorite books, with three-dimensional characters and a swoony-romance.

ONCE UPON A CRIME by Brynn Kelly (standalone): She’s a librarian. He’s a movie star. Lana and Griffin team up to find her missing sister and uncover a vast criminal network. It sounds intense, but it’s more like a rom-com romantic suspense, with humor and low conflict. It’s a nice “summer action movie” in a book.

book cover of Chick Magnet by Emma BarryFUNNY STORY by Emily Henry (standalone): Her fiancé kicked her out of their home. He has a vacancy now that his girlfriend is engaged to her ex-finance. Miles and Daphne have great chemistry, from commiserating roommates, to silly friends, to best friends and lovers. This was my first (and only) Emily Henry book. It is absolutely delightful, and I couldn’t put it down.

INTO THE WOODS by Jenny Holiday (Unnamed Series #2): She needs a break from her life. His band just imploded. Gretchen and Teddy are both artists-in-residence at a summer arts camp program. It’s a journey of self-discovery and falling in love. I picked this one because of the summer camp setting, but I also highly recommend Canadian Boyfriend, the first book in this series. Both are standalone with some related characters.

CHICK MAGNET by Emma Barry (standalone): She is a chicken influencer. He is a vet who doesn’t approve of recreational backyard chicken raising. Will and Nic start off with preconceived ideas about the other based on history but they end up as friends. I love everything by Emma Barry. She balances humor, romance, and some self-reflection. This is a lovely romance from start to finish.
