What I’m Talking About:
World’s Okayest Oracle (Reluctantly) Seeks Demon picks up with the plight of the Containment Zone residents after the deadly zombie outbreak (Zomromcom). This time around, the story follows the kind-hearted, pregnant oracle Gwen, who escapes the zone with her troll companions to find SERC council member Hugh Blacke in hopes he will believe the truth of what happened. Gwen and Hugh share a past when they briefly had a “moment” just before her disastrous oracle verification test, and despite never reaching out in the twenty years that followed, she believes he will keep his word of offered help.
Dade is one of my auto-read authors. I love her well-rounded, thoughtful characters and her stories are filled with the wittiest, funniest situations that leave me cackling. World’s Okayest Oracle is no exception. Dressing her MMC Hugh as Prince, complete with a crop top, and including two troll cousins who fight over gourmet foods are just a couple highlights.
Overall, I enjoyed World’s Okayest Oracle a lot. I loved how the story pieced together threads that began in the previous book. The storyline and humor are fabulous. Gwen and Hugh are both extremely considerate individuals with strong morals and generous spirits. They both carry a lot of baggage, and I love how they open up and confide in one another, supporting each other. And they make a very sexy pair!
But… while I love a cinnamon hero and appreciate and want high-quality main characters in my romance books, Hugh felt too perfect. He sees to Gwen’s every need. He apologizes for things outside his control. And Gwen is very similar, but since we experience Gwen’s POV, it makes more sense. However, we don’t get Hugh’s POV, and I feel that makes the story incomplete. I wanted to understand his motivations. I needed to experience his desires and fears, especially since the couple falls in love so quickly. It felt like a hole in the romantic storyline.
Also, the villain is a bit inconsistent. It’s implied that they have been playing a (very) long game, planning an uprising for years. Yet they fall into the basic “evil villain” stereotype – one who gloats and shares their plans, who has the chance to kill, but waits too long, etc.
That said, I did have fun reading World’s Okayest Oracle (Reluctantly) Seeks Demon and truly appreciate Dade’s storytelling. I like her multi-faceted characters who are considerate and attentive, but I wanted just a few rough edges.
